This may be interesting for those who purchased SE5 from steam or any other game. Not sure this if this is off topic since steam is one of 3 distribution methods for Space Empires games.

This reminds me an awful lot of an article I read a while back about the media over-hyping the threat of hackers, where some "1337 haxx0r" claims they've hacked the FBI, Pentagon, NASA, or whathaveyou. The article went on mostly about how various groups and agencies blew the threat of hackers way out of proportion (like one govm't agency releasing a report containing a theoretical hacker attack, and another agency releasing a report with the theoretical attack as a hard fact), but there was a pretty decent section detailing how most "1337 haxx0rz" are simply attention whores looking for their 15min of fame.

Didn't some writer for the New York Times or something write some article about hackers that was later proven by a web based news blog to be a hoax? Something to do with a hackers convention?

Sounds familiar all right. And where have you been the last while, AT? I've been missing your delightful OT posts, and I have faith that one day, somehow, you'll manage to top the hilarity that was Spiders on Drugs. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Actually there is a hacker convention, and every year they have alittle game they play there called "Spot the Fed". Basically the con is a bunch of "white hat" hackers, electronic/computer security specialist, and of course federal agency's getting together to share info on computer security and what not.

The original hackers were all blind men. A while back I watched a movie called Sneakers, and it wasn't until recently that I understood why the top computer guy, who was blind, was the hacker. Their was a group of people, hackers, who used to cheat ma bell out of line time by using simple little objects like a captain crunch whistle and a home made black box (phone dialer.) In fact it was what got Steve Wasso (sp) into making computers.
