Fleet Formations

What is the correct way to use fleet formations? I find that ships are often spread out too much for effective defense. When not in a fleet, they tend to be closer together. Is there a way to achieve this with a fleet?

I start with a tight formation then order everone to break formation at the start of the combat.

Tight formation? Is that a custom one?

For instance, I put a fleet in Dome formation In the sims, it sure does not look like the dome formation. What affect to TF formations have?

Some quick testing. Formation don't seem to work as they should. I places 20 ships in a fleet, 1 TF. Set the fleet formations to Wall and the TF formations to Wall. When the sim starts, they are not in a wall formation.

Another test, A fleet (1 TF) all set to Arrowhead. I set 4 colony ships to be Core and about 20 frigates as Escort. It does not look anything like it should, in fact its a hallow square with the ships on the edges and the Core ships up in the front of the square ( with no escorts ahead of them).
