Just a quickie. I'm one of those that has been waiting for SEV to get a little more "polished" than the original release. Namely in the AI department. Has the new patch made the game more challenging in that sense.
At first release I argued w/ the people who said the game was unplayable... until I came to agree with them.

play with balance mod or IRM.

The rest of the game is coming along nicely, but the AI is still not anywhere close to how it should be. Then again, Aaron looks to have been concentrating more on getting the bugs out for now. Hopefully there'll be arriving more AI improvements with the next patches.

Thanks guys. That's exactly what I was looking to find out. Maybe I'll wait for 1 more patch. I'm still very excited about the game.

nah, just play balance mod or IRM.
stock sucks and always will.
even better, get in on a multiplayer BM game, KOTH rocks for competitive games, and theres a few other games with 8 or so players going on, lots of fun.

How long do the multiplayer games go? I've never done that for SE or Civ, even though I love those kinds of games. But I go for the marathon (several days/weeks)ones, not the quickie 3-4 hour ones.

Multiplayer game turns usually try to start out doing a turn every 1-2 days. As the Empires get huge the turns will stretch out to 3-4 days. It really varies on the game and based on the other players.
Best idea is to go look at the Play by Web server and see what games are open right now: Play by Web (http://www.pbw.cc/text/index.jsp)
Find one that suits your play style/needs and jump in!

There are IMHO still some important bugs/features to adress before tackling the AI.(for instance the ability to change the place of ships in fleets...)
Otherwise, and unless a new annoying bug like invincible planets appears, I'd say that with 1.35, and mods if you play against the AI, Se5 finally reached the point where it's not a "beta" anymore.

There's games on PBW that have been going for years.

Wow. I had no idea. That's my kind of marathon game. Thanks guys, you've given me a whole new horizon... --cue sweeping music--
And Templar, for AI games what specific mods do you refer to?

BM an IRM. There is also the Unnamed's Stock AI upgrade Mod, but I didn't play it so I don't know how good the AI is there...

I have one game which HASN'T been going for a year. I think the host dissapeared and I am waiting till everyone else quits (we're down to 4) so I can declare myself the winner by the fact that I am the only remaining player, of sorts. How's that for long term strategy http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

How many games do you usually have going at once?
My issue is that when I'm in the mood to play, I dive in for hours at a time. I guess that's not quite possible w/ long term multiplayer games huh?

You can always play some single player after you finish your turns.
Don't join too many games to start with; turns don't take much time to play in the beginning, but they can start adding up as the games progress.

once you get into the mid/late game, turns can take an hour+

My trouble with multiple games is getting mixed up in the head on what i was doing with each Empire!
They start to blur together and I end up moving a ship North then on the next turn I start thinking why is this ship up North, then move it South!!
