Do Planetary Shields have to be brought down before troops can be landed?

Troops can be landed on shielded planets in SE4 too.
Boarding parties cannot be used on a ship that has at least one shield point, IIRC in both games.

See, the thing is, the shield only stops high-velocity objects. And troops aren't high-velocity enough. After all, you wouldn't want them to explode in a fiery ball of flame because the brakes couldn't handle the velociity, would you?

Right. See, no one complained when it happened like this in the Dune novels, or Star Wars Episode I, and now we all have to live with it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Actually, the planetary shield around Coruscant in Star Wars prevents even low-velocity objects like ships. In one of the books, the shields are kept up full-time in order to defend against cloaked asteroids in decaying orbit.

He was talking about Episode I, which featured no shielded Coruscant. Think gungans... In other SW movies, such as Episode V, shields are not penetrable by slow objects (like drop ships).

I believe Empire Strikes Back is more appropriate.
"Lord Vader, the rebel base is protected by a deflector shield. It is strong enough to resist any bombardment"
"General Veers. Prepare your men for a surface attack"
Basically I think you can't cover the entire planet unless you are a galactic level civilisation. Do what the empire did, land armour a few kilometers away and attack via land.

Quick question: if you have a shield regenerator, that means you will nearly always have more than 1 shield point... could your ship be boarded then?

You need to take out either the shield generators or the shield regenerator in order to board.
