View Full Version : Leaving for now

I know this may come as a shock to you all, but I think I'll be leaving Space Empires for a while... see, a few weeks ago I tried to dual-boot Linux, but while the installer was resizing my Windows partition it failed; Windows wasn't too badly damaged but some of my Control Panel icons were missing. Yesterday I finally decided to do something about it, so I pulled out my Windows XP CD and did a repair installation. Everything went fine, but I forgot that it was going to ask for my CD key again, and I couldn't remember where I'd left it. (In retrospect I realized that since this copy of XP was downloaded from MSDN Academic Alliance, I could have gone on the MSDNAA site to get the key, but I didn't think of that at the time.) So I decided to go ahead and wipe the drive and put Linux on it for good. Unfortunately this means I can't play SE5, and from past experience I seem to recall that switching mods in SE4 is not fun when you don't have Fyron's mod launcher utility. Honestly I think I've spent enough time on Space Empires anyway, and maybe I'll come back to it later, but for now it's time for a break. (Yes, I know I could just reinstall XP now that I know where to find the CD key, but I really don't feel like going through that again, and as I said, Space Empires has been taking too much of my time.) So I'm leaving all of my PBW games - I'll probably still frequent the IRC channel (you guys are great company http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif) but don't expect me to play any more Space Empires for a while. Sorry about this, but I think this is a sign that I just need to take a break - the game has become so addictive that it's almost a job now to get my PBW turns in every day, and I'd rather find something else to do...

For reference, Matryx' mod launcher probably runs better in wine. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I need a replacement for ed in an Adamant SE4 game. It's a small (~15 system) map.

When a game becomes like work, taking a break is a good idea. Best wishes to you!

Thanks guys... and sorry again for leaving all those "holes" in PBW games... I honestly don't know what I'm going to do with all the time that I used to spend playing Space Empires, and I might very well decide to come back - hey, the only gripe I have with Matryx's mod launcher is that it requires each mod to have its own savegame directory, but on Linux I should be able to fake that with symlinks! (See what happens when I don't plan ahead? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
But yeah, I think I do need a break - after all, it's been nearly 7 years since SE4 came out; I need to see what else is out there, and not just in terms of games http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Apologies once again to everyone whose PBW games I've disrupted; I've really enjoyed playing with you guys (even if I've had so many games I can't remember who's who anymore http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif), so it's nothing personal - and especially to Kaar and all the players in the "Proportional Empires" game - I still remember when that one started Kaar wanted to make sure that everyone was going to be a steady player, and I thought I'd never drop out... hopefully someone can keep those Progenitors peacefully expanding, and prevent the AI from going crazy and declaring war on everyone or even worse throwing the game into stagnation...
That said, I'll still stop by the forums occasionally (or maybe more)... I just want to see what else is out there for me to do! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Stopping completely Space Empires, that's a hard thing I probably couldn't do! ^^

By the way I replace you now in the game IRM3wayFFA and PBW didn't send me your password. Could you PM it to me? Thank you.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do next.
We'll be keeping a candle lit in the window, just in case you decide to find your way back...
