Sensori, are you insane? I am already making arrangments for the final seige on my capital. I havent won an offensive strike against you in several turns, and you are killing my forces in the south faster than I can recruit.

I am having to sell off my gem reserves just to make ends meet! If I lost to you (a solid lose) when I had 60 sacreds, what makes you think im going to beat your invasion army now, with 30? Now you even have falling fires, and you are the one who is worried?

Has the world gone mad?!

I may be killing them faster than you can recruit, but you are also killing my forces faster than I can get more, and my forces suck a lot more *** than yours do in low numbers. As my troop count inevitably becomes lower, your chances become better. That's the thing - 400 Maenads is OK. 200 is meh. 100 is omg they die. Not to mention that every time I lose a Pan, I lose more than just a mage, I lose a source of troops.

I find myself unable to GET THROUGH. Time is much more against me than you - every turn you get more Helhirdings, and I get way too few Maenads to fight that.

March a massive invasion force (1000+ backed up by 15 or so Pan and the Gorgon) into the Helheim capital. Script the mages to cast area affect blood and nature spells to take down the glamour and slow down the helherdlings. Script the gorgon to cast summon earth power, and then rain falling fires. I don't think helheim has a direct counter (stealth is another issue). You should be able to take the helheim capital and thus end the helherdling threat.

I already had research falling fires before I lost contact with the game. Although only the gorgon can cast the spell, and she may have been lost by my stalling. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

Yeah, that might've worked if Pangaea happened to be the one on the offensive when stuff started happening rather than Helheim who now was prepared to attack from both ways, and it took very little effort for him to change that into major defensive line. I might be whittling his troops away, but he's doing the very same to me. This is why I sort of asked if someone else could attack Helheim, but apparently Agartha is busy running after some lone army and Mictlan is busy... Doing... Something.

Script the mages to cast area affect blood and nature spells to take down the glamour and slow down the helherdlings.

Something like that I've been doing (nature area effect crap), but the 15 blood slaves and the distinct lack of blood hunters kind of removed blood from the menu. Stales did that I bet. ;p

You should be able to take the helheim capital and thus end the helherdling threat.

Yeah, should, but as I said, stales did a lot to screw things up.

Doesn't sound like a lost cause to me.

It's the same for both sides. Only difference is that he can recruit troops, while I can't get more Pans out - and he has summons, I don't even have gems/slaves to touch them to much effect.

I already had research falling fires before I lost contact with the game. Although only the gorgon can cast the spell, and she may have been lost by my stalling. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

Yeah, I noticed that and started using it, and that side of the battlefield has been working out... Kind of OK. But in general, the staling did a LOT to help Helheim. The distinct lack of income is a humongous problem out here in the periphery, and I'm still certain that all I can do is stall Helheim's progress, no matter what he says.

Not to be a downer, but my progress ends this weekend when I go away. I just wanted to get a good battle or two in before I went. If I won, iw ould have ofered Helheim to you to sub, if I lost, then I had no worries about having to leave.

But now we are in this stare match and my guess is that I will fizzle out un-eventfully. I have too few units to be on the offensive. I need the PD. When the time comes, I suppose I will try and offense, but It will most likely be in vain. I just can't slaughter the chaff fast enough.

No, you have. And the current turn amply proves it.

I did that attack just to show you how much you've been worrying about nothing, and what I've been saying is true. Now, I will be putting Pangaea to AI as I was supposed to, because I have sufficiently proved my point - no matter what you've been saying, Pangaea does not stand a chance, and every single thing I've done was just to stall the inevitable. Well, everything but the last attack, because I knew I'd lose before I even did it (originally I wasn't even going to do it because I knew it'd end in a disaster ;p), which is exactly why I did it.

Either Saint_Dude overestimated his power or the stales did Pangaea in, whichever is the truth, I don't really care. At the point I took Pangaea over, winning was no longer an option.

But I still slowed you down, nee-ner!

FAJ

I think Saint_dude was going to try and take my capital while I was away, busy seiging Marverni. he waited a turn too late or something, because I was on my way back up when he made his first attack, so he wasn't able to shut down my capital.

And yes, that battle was not in your favor. I need the PD, and couldn't really attack you. That why I had low hopes. Even now, after your armies in that area are gone, I go, by gut reaction, to send a followup to attack that province, only to realize that I only have 3 sacreds and about 15 chaff that didn't run away or die. Without massive PD, I wouldn't have been able to withstand any of your attacks and my offense is pitifully small.

You are welcome to take over Helhiem though. I will be away on vacation and otherwise I will probably just set it AI.

Sensori
August 8th, 2007, 10:22 AM
Nah, I don't really wanna take over another (soon-to-be-dying from the looks of it, if the neighbors, as it seems, will start abusing the situation) nation in Sophistry. ;p

And saying that that battle wasn't in my favor is an understatement - I lost the entire backbone of the army, as I thought I would. And as I said, I only did it to prove a point, which was that I couldn't get to Helheim even if I wanted to.

And he didn't just wait a turn too long, he apparently kept most of his armies in Pangaea while starting a war with some small scout group. What he should've done instead is brought the entire army there right when you were busy running around after me, crushed all opposition and besieged Helheim. ;p Instead it seems he made his intentions clear way too early, then staled and let you destroy any chances of victory Pangaea might've had.

And I think it'd be only fitting that we both go AI in a quick succession after this thing that weakened us both to a point where we'd be easy pickings.

But dummy me put him in the back and of course the banelord just flew to the rear and ganked him first.

But woah, I'll have to remember the maggot spell. With 20 or so pd a level 1 nature mage has a chance to route a banelord thug.

Cool u really did defeat 300 soldiers with 20 troops? Do you have a replay? can u show me? how to view a replay?

Baalz
August 14th, 2007, 02:18 PM
I don't think it's possible to share a replay (without sharing the whole turn and password), but its not terribly hard for elite, dual blessed (just guessing) troops to defeat an arbitrary amount of chaff. Assuming F/W blessed vans (again, guessing) it's not a stretch for them to each kill 1-3 cheap units a round...and with that ratio of troops most of the vans will be able to engage while a good portion of the chaff will be in the back rows waiting for their turn. Figure some of the chaff may have been ineffective archers, and probably not too great moral (you don't have to kill anywhere near all 300). So if most of the Vans are able to average a couple kills per round, it'd only take 3-4 rounds to kill close to half the 300. Throw in maybe a thunderstrike or two and the chaff will be routing before you know it. Now, that's kinda a best case scenario, and I doubt that it was complete chaff they were up against, but with that super high defense the Vans can usually keep whacking significantly longer than 3 rounds. Even if their kill rate was one third of that against heavy infantry (less than one kill per turn apiece...and this is quickened 2 flaming attacks) they're not dropping from fatigue yet after 10 rounds, and a defense value more than 12 above the attackers attack value combined with glamour means they almost never get hit. Not a pretty site...depending on your perspective. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

August 14th, 2007, 03:38 PM
Well, it wasn't the enemy troops that caused the problem because my dual wielding maidens don't have too much trouble hitting his glamoured units but it was the 9 or 10 mages casting bladewind on my lightly armored units that did them in.

So close, So close....

Caelum masses an army featuring 40+ casters. They all just sit back behind their mammomths and archers and spam summon air power, thunderstrike. One of their eagle kings is holding a staff of storms.

First fight I tried to evict him i attack with my army and 20 casters. I get up flaming arrows, wind guide, ive got guys spamming thunder ward everywhere. spamming terror on his mammoths backed by soul slays. 30 river demons hold the center while 150 warriors of the 5 elements hold the flanks. Thing is, I re-equipp 4 of my commanders which resets their orders to defend. They are leading the 200 composite archers and 100 heavy infantry and they are a no-show for the fight. awww damn it was sooo close but my losses are too great and my forces retreat.

I lose 20 commanders, all my river demons, half my wo5e and almost all of the chaff, 5-10 of which are celestial masters. He loses every mammoth. 1 caster. ouch. not a good exchange.

So, I have this bright idea. I equip an air queen with about 14 air gems, horror helm, rime hauberk, ring of regen, amulet of reinvigoration, charcoal shield, flame brand and I wind ride into his province. I teleport along my pretender as the tank and put her in front of the air queen.
The air queen scripts summon storm power, and the lightning storm spell (forget name) mist form, air shield, attack. My pretender buffs with ehthereal, luck, breath of winter.

Now, what normally has been happening (I tested a few times with my pretender) is that all of the air casters default to casting summoning phantom wolves because of the lightning /cold immunities. I was going to sit back and let the phantom wolves wash over me while the lightning storm did its work.

It worked like a charm accept one thing. He added in a group 20 or so of Storm warriors that can fly during a storm. they land on top of the 2 SC's. then some arrows fly which kills about 1/3 of them. they attack and actually do damage to the air queen who is at 50 fatigue after casting the lightning storm.Ahh no, magical ice weapons! After their round the 2 scs attack and knock the group down to about 7 left. Despite their losses, mounuting fatigue from the 2 frost auras and the horror helm they stay and attack 1 more round. blam, dead air queen!! After that the storm warriors were killed/routed by my pretender, but the damage was done. no more lightning storm. Of course then the plan works perfectly. the phantom wolves pile up around the pretender, the combat moves to 50 turns and she routs and dies.

Damn those Storm warriors!

Caelum, I hope you enjoy the gear they were wearing.

No, not like you at all. The distinction was between randomly distributing gems/items/gold to other people, and giving it out to allies.

Hey, I'm a friendly giant. I only attacked Yomi because Abyssia pulled through on his diplomacy (with whom I had positive diplomatic relations way back in the yonder years.)

Anyway, look at the research graphs. Sure, I'm all big and scary and I'm giants, but if you spend all your resources attacking me, you'll miss the real threat from people with some late game punch.

That said, I'm always open to negotiations and would love to have allies http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. I'm willing to be very generous and reasonable since I really, really don't want to be ganged up on http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif.

I'm taking my turn now, no need for a delay. I've got zip on info other than what I can see looking at the map. I wouldn't ordinarily ask, but lacking any context if any of the people with armies on my border are planning to immediately attack me it would be sporting to give me the heads up that relations are hostile. Outside of that I'll assume neutral relations at this point, other than Abyssia who appears to be halfway down my gullet.

Well, I seem to have blown my entire load of earth gems and am ready to offer low low forging prices to anyone I'm not at war with (which right now is everybody not AI). I can forge most things and can probably offer them cheaper than you can forge them yourself. Best prices if you can pay in earth or water gems, but I'll accept most anything so nows the time to get those off path items your own mages can't forge. Bulk discounts and financing available.

Ok, I just found my new favorite spell. I guessed right and my 20 casters just wooped up on Caelums 50 man caster army. Total tally: 2 banelord thugs and a bezerk Celestial master dead vs 38 out of 50 Caelum casters dead. It's about time I won one.

Storm warriors helped my calvary get close. But they still ran away before doing much damage. The spell that ripped him up was Astral fire. Mmm, No immunity to it.

Just wish I hadnt lost one of my lucky S3 mages with some nice penetration items to that retarded beserk spell.

My pretender is dead, and 400+ gems are down the drain.

Guess why?

I teleported my pretender onto dry land without an amulet.

Normally I'm extremely mum about things going on in the game. I hate to give away any advantage, but this is so utterly awful I had to share. I'm sure some people were curious why the forge went back down.

I could keep toughing it out for a good while, but what it boils down to is that I can't keep up with you.

1 SC per turn, a near infinite supply of gold, and a much more efficient use of gems from Forge of the Ancients.

I dunno, you tell me. I have -- I counted, 17 Tartarians all equipped who can cloud trapeze or teleport. About 10 more of the ones who dont have Air or Astral. I have 2 armies capable of teleporting hiding behind castles/domes waiting to attack. Both have about 10 cloud trapezing/teleporting mages in support who will cast doom/cloud warriors/ iron warriors, etc.. Each army has about 100 wights/100 river and celstial warriors and 100 or so warriors of the 5 elements. I am summoning 3 tarts a turn, gifting 2 per turn making 2 clams a turn and have had the chalice for a long time so I have a big reserve of tarts to gift. With all of that, I doubt I have any prayer of beating DRP

DrPraetorious
January 2nd, 2008, 10:52 PM
I'm making 20 clams and 7 blood stones per turn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. I could make more but I can only forge 50 items per turn. I'm wishing for gems every turn, but considering how many I have I may start wishing for Seraphs or Mandahas, but not until my backlog of Niefel Jarls are equipped.

I'm outfitting communions to spam undead mastery and master enslave at huge penetration bonuses. The entire communion is made of Gygja and immune to cold and 75% fire resistant.

I've got a horde of earth mages ready to spam earth attack as soon as any army rears it's ugly head in an unprotected province. If the army isn't entirely fire immune I can follow up with enough flames from heaven to kill half the army right through almost any defenses, so troops are pretty well useless against me.

My main problem right now is organizational - turns take forever and I'm in a bunch of other games.

Grats Dr.P!
It was fun getting to the endgame, but most of my neighbors AIed so it wasn't exactly hard to gobble up their land.

Rytek
January 3rd, 2008, 09:26 PM
Unfortunately I see that in alot of games and the victor is the one who gets to gobble up all of the AI's. I was at war since turn 10 of this game, first C'tiss attacked me. And when the war with C'tiss was over Caelum attacked me. I finally caused Caelum enough pain to offer me peace and negotiate to attack Oceanus (who was the biggest power next to me) then Caelum drops from the map leaving me fighting the second biggest pretender by myself. Once I finally had fended off Oceanus I was too far behind in the build up war even with taking all of Caelums lands.

But-- congrats DrP. Well played. Your giants were unstoppable. I take a morale victory having my pretender with 1724 kills and top of the hall of fame. My pretender single handedly beat back armies from all of my foes with muscle and spells.

BigDisAwesome
January 3rd, 2008, 09:59 PM
What kind of pretender did you have anyway? I never got a scout on him.

Rytek
January 3rd, 2008, 10:33 PM
It was an awake dom 6 Lady of fortune with S6W4. Just like I suggest in the other forum. A very good pretender for the early-mid and late game. I had to bring her out vs Ctiss because he rushed me with alot of chariots and I went the Heavy infantry/composite bow route to expand. Luckily I had const 4 and Alt 3 researched and the pretender wiped 3 of his armies. Then Caelum attacked with 30+ eagle kings spamming thunder strike so I used my pretender to pin his army. Every time he split off and raided I pounced with my pretender-- Most of those kills are undead chaff killed on the charcoal shield and then later on ghost wolves.
