Can someone explain how combat works? I tried a few combat runs and all I could do was drag and select. Then I proceed to right click to move and attack. How do I target? Choose which targets to fire, etc etc?

Targetting is automatic unless you commanded otherwise - you can manually target a ship by right-clicking on it. For more precise controls, try all the buttons in the combat display.

Or heck read the manual. There is a PDF on the disc and in the game directory.

"RTFM" isn't a very helpful reply...

Your right, but most people come here to ask questions that require a helpful answer. This one probably could have been answered by the user, if he tried researching it on his own, by reading the manual, or trying the tutorial, or even fiddling around with the buttons.

I can't remember a time when any question like that received a reply of the "RTFM" type on these forums... At least try to be more subtle, along the lines of "In chapter X of the manual, it says that you can blah blah blah."

Oh, I thought there was more to combat than just right clicking. Hmmm, I'm guessing fleets and fleet strategies are gonna be really important then. What if I wanted to target like, all my missiles at a base and all my direct fire weapons at a ship?

Thats when you get into the orders buttons on the bottom right.
There's a target selected weapons one which opens a window to choose which weapons you want to fire at the chosen target.

that's why I select Strategic battles. I don't really care to get into all that detail.

Right now, I'm in the habit of dropping troops down into other planets. Is it a good idea to just kill the entire population and before assaulting it?

If you annihilate a planet's population prior to landing your troops, there won't be a colony left to land troops to!

What do you mean? I shot at a colony a few times to reduce the population, it went horribly wrong cuz all of them died before I could stop my ships but I invaded anyway and I got the colony with the facilities intact(more or less) without having to fight the stupid militia.
Is there a way to target certain things on the planet?
