View Full Version : AI research script??

Could anybody give me some explanations how the "AI global research" and "AI research" scripts function?
Especially the "age research" levels and the interaction of the two AI research files are a complete mystery to me.
I started to try some modding myself and as soon as you alter some tech areas and levels you should of course adapt the AI research to this.
Any help is appreciated.

The global research file is only called only during random AI creation before the game starts. Script_AI_Research is used in game to determine the tech areas the AI will research at a given time. I don't have a reference to look at right now, but from what I recall all the listed techs are added before it will advance to the next age. I think it was a way MM used to organize the file a bit.

Thank you very much for your reply Kwok. With your experience you should write a modding manual if you once can spare the time.
One more question: what is the effect of the "critical", "high", "medium" and "low" research priority. I guess it determines how many percent of the research spending goes into this specific research area, but do you know that more precisely?

It's something I added so that an AI in a war state etc. would focus on certain important tech areas. The [Empire]_Main script files have some lines that control when the AI is in a certain research state.

If people would add this sort of stuff to the Wiki (http://wiki.spaceempires.net) as they went along, it would go a long way towards having a modding manual. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

So why is it the AIs don't research research?

We need a bit of context.
