SE4 is crashing every time when I run v1.41 under Windows Millenium Edition!

It runs perfectly fine on the Win98 machine sitting 2cm away, though. SE4 v1.35 works perfectly fine under WinME.

I've tried downloading the patch twice, but it works fine on 98.

What happens is that every AI message that I recieve crashes the game. I see the pic of the race and a "message from the XYZ Empire:" text, but then there is a random pixel pattern beside that, and sometimes I get half of an interlaced race pic covering the galaxy map on the bottom left of my log.

There is no crash until I look at the log message, so if I only read the non-message entries I'm ok.

This sucks, since my w98 machine is half the speed, and my brother uses it all the time.

PS: Yes, I know its a crappy bloatware OS, but it came with the machine.

i have that same crappy os on my laptop, because i didnt want to hunt down all the win2k drivers.

all the games i upgraded to 1.41 are running fine, but i tried starting one fresh on 1.41 a little while ago and saw a similar problem. it sucks since the Messages from other empires are usually at the top of the list, so you often dont get a choice about reading them. I have not tried to recreate this bug on other games, but i guess i should.

I run Me at home and have zero problems with SE4.

Just an FYI...

Do yourselfs all a favor, don't by anything beyond windows 98. Microsoft is like the Ancient Egyptians. Sure, they were the world once, then it all just went down hill.

It sounds like the same thing that happened to me when I upgraded to 1.41, and I have 98. It was one of two things that fixed the problem: either uninstalling and reinstalling SEIV (with a reboot between), or updating to the latest driver for my video card. I'd try uninstalling first. Hope that helps!

Id like to think that XP would be good (its all pure 32 bit code and all) but its got this weird hardware PIN code thing that I dont want to contemplate
