I had this idea but I don't know if it can be done. A few years ago I offered a suggestion for a new system wide ancient mine field.

I was thinking would it be possible to set up an asteroid heavy system with asteroids that can do damage ranging from mild to catastrophic? For their descriptions, say something like - These asteroids were ladened with energy mines that detonate doing damage to any ship within range. I don't know if you could use different damage types like engines only, weapons only, or so on.

I don't know if this can be done in SE V or even in SE IV but it would be cool if it could be. Heck you could even replace the asteroid images with new mine looking ones.

Is this a valid concept or a waste of time?

No reason you can't do that. Just add lots of damaging asteroids as you said. They'll only do normal damage, and only to ships entering the sector, but that's not bad.
The trick would be getting the AI to deal with it.

and of course, you'd have to deal with pedantic idiots ilke me asking why minesweepers don't work on it and the minefield never depletes.

I guess you could handwave that away in the sector's description.

What does this have to do with Fyron?

Fyron has proven himself to be a very competent modder when it comes to making quadrant mods. So this kind of thing would be right up his alley. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I guess you would have to call a mine field like this a self replicating mine field. Thus why it is still around after a millennium.

The "minesweeper" for these mines could use SM to convert the asteroids into a "planet" which is just another tiny, uncolonizable planet with a pic and description indicating normal asteroids.

The AI automatically avoids entering damaging sectors within a system. It would only run into an asteroid minefield if it was in the same sector as a warp point that it just came through.

Edit: Or at least that's how it behaved in SEIV. I still don't have SEV to check what things have changed.

I cannot but help to notice that Fyron hasn't posted. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Logic, my dear Zoe, merely enables one to be wrong with authority.

And indeed, that is the problem. If there is no easy path through the system, the AI just won't make it.
Which includes not only no path, but also when the paths include moving away from the destination in order to make it without damage.

Can you vary damage from none to massive?

You should be able to using the Random function.

I haven't posted because you already got the answer I would have given.

The problem is, none of us are telepathic.

(Also - That's how you cast 'Summon Fyron' http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif )

One possible answer here might be that it is a self-replicating minefield, and uses an ancient and advanced form of technology too sophisticated to be removed or disarmed by any known minesweeper technologies.

Just a thought....

I didn't want to assume anything Fyron. I have done that before and it has come back to bite me in arse. Besides, there is nothing better than to hear it directly from the person without the confusion of a middle man. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
