Ascendancy didn't make it into my backups, and now that the old computer went kaput, ... well.... ALL hope is not lost, but I wouldn't hold my breath. (I may just start over without trying to resurrect it)

Owch. Perhaps you should attach a zip of the savegame to each of your story posts, so we can see what's going on, but also so it is impossible for you to lose the game.
