Ironically, my turns are lately getting a lot easier in this game...

Hmm? Somebody attacking you, djo?

djo
January 14th, 2008, 09:18 PM
Half of my neighbors are attacking me (literally, 3 of 6 of them). I am being euphemistic here; when I say "attacking", I mean "occupying", "pillaging", and "sieging". The "attacking" part has been minimal. Ah, the mighty Ulm war machine, you conquered too much, too fast, and the jealousy of the world will be your undoing.

DonCorazon

We are kicking ourselves for not "migrating" to Ulm earlier. So much uneaten rice that has just been sitting in the unguarded fields. Your other 3 pacifist neighbors should join in our efforts to help make Ulm a more multicultural country!

Which raises the question, where is the mighty Ulmish war machine? If there has been a lack of "attacking" it is only b/c we cannot find anyone to fight. So far the country appears eerily deserted...

caveat: I have yet to look at the latest turn file

djo
January 14th, 2008, 10:41 PM
Ulmish folk are sophisticated urbanites. They congregate in the cities, where there is art, music, and good food. And they know that rice is a weed that grows in swamps before you drain them and let the cattle start grazing. When you arrive in the capital, you will meet the brave men and women of Ulm. But we fear that, as is so often the case, the barbarian hordes will overwhelm the civilized few.

O, pity the world that must endure without Ulm! Pity the Epotara that is to come!

Jealousy? We are wounded by your words. We merely wish to bring the light the One into the dank and dreary place that is Ulm.

I'm currently sieging atlantis in their capitol and have taken down some of their troops.. I'd be willing to leave tha capitol and let someone else take it if I get help on that front.. sart fighting atlantis in the next few turns and move your army towards their capitol (so I can see you are participating ) and I will willingly leave that place (I can use the troops elsewhere)

The offer stands for all nations, of course it must be reflected in the charts of atlantis.. army and province number should drop significatly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Atlantis is a good prey for those who are adjecent to it.\
1. already in war
2. low income due to sieged capitol (and no 2nd one conquered yet)
3. relative low number of troops.

Help me and we can establish a nice border between our nations halfway on atlantian soil http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

let me hear reactions please.. all nations on the south of the sea should have huge benefit from this.

Just for interest, what would generally cause a turn to suddenly 'not work', when others have been OK?

Perhaps we should consider having a third party play the turn to see if its Aezeal's machine that is the problem? Perhaps QM or one of the other players who could be reached in IRC and could carry out his orders relatively faithfully.

Wokeye: I don't know the answer to your question. Sometimes it is just human error, where a player does not play the turn and sends an old file by accident. That's not what was causing Aezeal's problem.

Aezeal
January 21st, 2008, 06:20 PM
I don't think vista was the problem it self.. the UAC thingie on vista gave me problems deleting files and making new ones though (or something..)

I deleted the whole epotara file I had and made a new one and re-DL the trn file in there (all the time asking about 2-3 conformations before it actually did ti).. and somehow dominions still knew what I had done when I send it in the first time... So I forcefully turned that UAC thingie off... and then I could just delete it and DL-ed the trn file in another file I had...(from another game) and REALLY replay it... and then all was well

--> sounds easy maybe but I literally played that turn 6 times.. of which 4 times in a row yesterday --> annoying

Well I admit that with you it's not THAT bad.. I couldn't know your capitol home army with all mages AND the pretender would be to much for just a bunch of troops ...

And that I can take some provinces from you is because I have all new armies there too...

up north on the other side I've not even beaten the first MAN army and a second large one is coming..

I'm not really sure what I should've done better though.. my mages aren't that good as battle mages I think 2 s or 2a and some randoms...

Once this is over (or anytime anyone is willing to give advice) I should hear what I can do best with volva's and with galdermen

OK, now I am started to get pissed. Midgard is not dead, and is not, from what I know, on the verge of death. Is he suffering defeats? Absolutely. It is not like I haven't lost a lot of troops myself. Hell, I bet I probably lost more mages. I am willing to give Midgard pointers, but not while he is still in the game. Also keep in mind Midgard isn't some helpless, poor nation here. He was one of the most, if not the most, powerful nations for a while. Moreover, he has cried wolf since the beginning. Midgard will probably complain next turn about being double teamed just as he continually has, every turn. Don't let that get to you. Of course he will make everything sound horrible; he doesn't want to be destroyed.

Midgard is losing against me, but it hasn't been just a walk in the park for me. In one battle for instance, if his side would have had one more turn, I would have lost. So please, unless you are in this war or in the region, stop interfering.

Meglobob
January 26th, 2008, 07:32 AM
Correct me if I am wrong but Man has 3 VPs? You need 5 to win, if you finish Midgard then you capture 1 more VP, which is likely as Midgard is being attacked by both you and Atlantis. You then need only 1 VP for the win.

Mans neighbours take note!

Perhaps this is why Midgard is getting some advisers?

Btw, Vanjarls use as raiders to raid his provinces via cloud trapeze and destroy Mans economy. Even fully tooled Vanjarls will have difficulty taking on entire armies.

Aezeal
January 26th, 2008, 08:18 AM
Ehm I will certainly keep complaining every turn..

it's quite obvious that since this double teaming has started 2 nations have gained a lot in provinces and others stats while I have well... lost everything.. my nations IS on the verge of death since all provinces I have are near the utgard capitol and thus nearl out of reach and my troops there are now seeing 2 large armies from you which I can't possibly beat without more troops which I can't send there since atlantis is on my back..

MORE than enough reason for me to want help AND there are more than enough reasons for others to start stopping you and atlantis now..
atlantis has a LARGE number of provinces and still hasn't got all water provinces which it will probbly also get.. it SEEMS to have few troops but it's gotten crack troops with high defense etc.

kick their asses like I've been doing/trying

ow anyway.. about the advice.. I could ask them in PM or I could even ask in the rest of the forum too...

Hello:

Yes, Midgard is in a big war with Atlantis and Man. We in Atlantis attacked Midgard because we were alarmed that they had quickly gobbled up Utgard and were moving swiftly against Abysia. If all goes well in this war against Midgard, Man will have 3 VP's, and Atlantis will have 2. That's not quite so alarming.

In terms of complaining, I think that's just fine! I like to complain, too. I cite my first squeal-fest when Boron smushed me: http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=278403&page=&view=&sb=5&o =&fpart=5&vc=1

ehm except for the fact that abyssia is near there and also close to death and that if you 2 can combine against me you can go against everyone and noone could stop you..

so maybe I could get a lil help? no make that A LOT of help.. my main problem is getting man of my back and getting the utgard capitol back atm.

PS Ramshead.. I can't remember having killed any of your mages.. that communion you had casting blade wind was the friggin problem I lost anyway... I couldn;t get through the knights and your mages got to me.

Lies! Midgard is no defender of Abysia, and quite frankly, we are quite sure that Caelum and Pythium are spying the Abysian capital as a tasty morsel.

Atlantis is desperately fighting a righteous war of defensive aggression. Midgard is a disease, and we are valiantly administering the cure. /threads/images/Graemlins/Peace.gif

We realize that education is not the strong suit of "Barbarian Kings", so we will clarify (using small words):

You're holding the map upside-down. The "N" goes at the top.

The old palace is being held by sushi-slurping, sake-swilling, silly samurai. We still occupy the summer palace in New Ulm, downriver and south of old Ulm. (After the glorious transcendence of our god, there was really no need to stay in old Ulm anymore.)

Your hordes occupy one of our many guest houses. We understand how it looks like a palace if you're used to living in animal skins stretched over sticks.

Hi:

It looks like the current patch is available. Please remember to play your current turn in this game before you apply the patch, unless you decide to have more than one copy of the game on your computer (one with the current patch and one without). I would like to wait until tonight to decide whether to use the patch for this game. If players have thoughts, please post them in the thread.

Thanks.

In the RAND game, some players suggested that we wait a few days before patching for this game. It is not uncommon that little problems creep up from the patches. I recommend that players have more than one version of the game on their computers (patched & not patched), which is very easy to do. Just copy the program file before patching.

It's not that big a deal, especial for PBEM... it takes less than half a gig for me, and I have every user-made mod and map I could find. Just copy the old version to the desktop before you patch, and run the games from there for the non-patched versions.

One of the big questions of course is if the mods work with the patches.

Jomon,

We are disappointed. Not a season has gone by since we headed to the summer palace, and you already have hordes of barbarians roaming the streets of old Ulm. Or perhaps those are your in-laws, we aren't sure. And now you come south, to New Ulm, to presumably do the same? For shame!

DonCorazon
January 30th, 2008, 10:20 PM
I can assure the world, the fruits of Ulm are riddled with worms. Why all the unrest in Old Ulm citadel given our new benevolent and non- blood-worshipping regime? And we quickly lost the province of Old Ulm to a barbarian uprising. Is that some power of Ulm or just misfortune - which Lady Oponn rarely if ever should experience? And now the paranoia Jomon suffers never knowing when a contingent of stealthy rangers is going to strike.

Better had we stayed in the Imperial Palace sipping on sake.

The patch changed the names of the Pythium .trn & .2h files. Because I did not know this, Pythium accidentally got a stale turn. So, I am rehosting the turn to take care of that problem.

Because of the delay, I will extend the deadline to play turns until Friday night.

Pasha

djo
January 30th, 2008, 10:35 PM
Remember, whenever there's a rehost, dump your old .2h file along with your old .trn file. That seems to lessen the chance of later weirdness. Or so we superstitious folk believe.

The fortune tellers of Ulm are proud to announce that, through their wise ways and mystic might, they have reversed time itself and brought the universe into a new and better reality, one in which they have prevented the invasion of their former homeland by barbarians. As much as Ulm hates Jomon, we admit they are slightly more civilized than the rampaging hordes (that we suspect are related to Tien Chi).

You may show your thanks by making large cash contributions to the Ulm's widow's fund (of which you are largely the cause anyway).

In addition to that tho, I was noting how CTis has apparently sacked the TC capital with no losses while I was gone. That was a real shocker.

Hello, excuse me, no losses...if we had not changed from 3.10 to 3.14 and reset the graphs, the army graph would show I destroyed half the national army of Ctis. Indeed well doing so I also destroyed most of Pangaea's army as well.

So to set the record straight I fought a 3 front war vs Ulm, Pan and Ctis and destroyed 1,900 (approx) out of 2,000 enemy troops that dared, dared I say challenge the considerable might of the barbarian kings. Sadly, those 100 ctis troops that survived were just enough to conquer my capital Tien Chi. This slight misjudgement could well spell the demise of the barbarian kings, sadly... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Yep ctiss generals are currently anxious having to send live being to battle. Ctiss live troops are not use to battle, they usually hide behind undead.
Does blade cut ? Does it hurt a lot ? Some questions coming from basic grunts.....

Of course we can yet use the luxury and the enlightment of the tien chi capital city before your massive counter attack army reach it....

The lands of Epotara have been eerily silent since the squalling pleas for mercy of Ulmish barbarians were silenced many moons ago. What news?

Jomon admittedly has little to report other than a diplomatic mishap that occurred when Hiro, junior half-breed ninja, was caught and executed by some xenophobic Pythium villagers. Hiro was on his way to see his sick grandmother, who is from Man. Unfortunately, he was wearing the family heirloom Bracers of Protection and this equipment led the Pythium Consul to determine Hiro had more sinister goals in mind.

All is quiet now after the initial furor in Jomon died down and the press has moved on to a recent scandal re: a Jomonese governor and concubine....

Arco, the people of Marignon repsectfully request that you reconsider your ill-advised decision.

It may seem to you that this decision is wise in that the risk to your nation is small (three aginast one?). Nothing could be farther from the truth. The truth is that your involvement in this conflict against Man would displease us. This fact alone should give you pause.

No doubt your scouts have informed you that we are too far away from your lands to be a threat. We know that you are far too wise to trust entirely in this council. The truth is that you are not (could never be) beyond our reach.

We are a peaceful people. So, we emplore you: do not risk the wrath of heaven. It would not please us to see your lands made desolate. She who commands the stars weeps at the possibility that you would be so foolish as to ignore this one and only warning.

Of course, it does not mean that i will attack everyone. I'am not completely mad ^^. I will stick to the plans i already have with my neighbourgs, but if situation change i do not want to be blocked by obsolete pacts.

Indeed, Pythium has made a claim on Utgard and currently has a force of 500 troops at its crumbled gates, plus 200 or so marching in the mountains nearby.

The Pans very much longed to erect many oddly phallic shrines there and sacrifice enemy warriors, chickens and herrings in devotions to their pretender god. We do not take the attempt to steal our agreed war prize lightly, and will be seeking retribution on the field of war.

What?? Has the whole world gone mad with anti-Pythium fever that even my allies now succumb to it? This is a dark day indeed! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/fear.gif

While the council of Pythium normally takes a position of ignoring propaganda, we will make an exception due to the severity of these claims. The High Commitee of Army Seige Affairs has been formed that will now begin an immediate investiagtion of these claims leveled against us. The truth will be known soon enough!

Silence, Wormtongue! You shall not use your trickery here, Ironhawk. The sun shines so we can clearly witness your dastardly nature! Your voice seeks to soothe while your hands are working overtime.

Hahah, nice Pasha. You know I always love your propaganda posts http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

So, I imagine many people are planning on casting remote attacks this turn. But you should be aware that, if cast by a third party, such spells randomly target either the seiger or the seigee. There's no way to force it to target one particular army. The only people who can safely cast into a seige situation are the two players involved in it.

I considered keeping this fact to myself for sheer amusment value http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ...but eventually I felt obligated as an experienced player to point it out. Feel free to test it yourself.

GG All. Learnt lots, cheers.

A cornered Pythium will strike out suddenly and decisively in any direction to make it through alive, it seems. Being Australian (home to the deadliest snakes in the world) I should have had a better appreciation of this when the world declared war a few turns ago. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Not that I would have realistically deflected that Tartarian-infested army, anyways.

Thanks for hosting, Pasha!

Congratulations, IH. While I appreciated I was dealing with a deadly snake, I could do little to stop him.

Wraps up the last of series of games I started as a pure noob, 2 weeks after buying the game back in Oct 07. Learned a lot and enjoyed playing with you all.

Thanks for hosting Pasha.

Thanks for playing, All. I had a lot of fun sailing around the ocean.

Hehehehe! Man am I glad that worked!! I literally had nothing else up my sleeve if that failed. While there was plenty of propaganda going around there at the end - believe it or not - I had not intended on taking Utgard at the start of the war. I'd hoped to defeat Man quickly in a combined offensive and then declare war on another nation to get my last VP. However when the war dragged on and (I'm not kidding) every other nation declared war on me I knew I had no choice left. Apologies to Wok for the double-cross, tho I think he understood my reasons.

Great game tho guys, I had a ton of fun! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I went into this game thinking that I was absolutely going to lose. LA Pyth seemed like a really, really awkward nation and I didnt have any kind of plan. But with a lot of work and a good helping of luck I managed to cobble together a solid strategy out of it. After this game I think that LA Pyth could be a contender among LA nations. As you could see from my gem and research graphs its a really solid end game nation with huge magic diversity.

Those last couple of turns were some of the most fun I've had in any game - thanks again guys http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Trying to keep all my enemies off balance for literally (as Pasha and Wok can atest) just one more turn was a diplomatic whirlwind! Never played a game where one single turn would decide the life or death of my entire nation - crazy! And then after I submitted there were like 5 delays! I practically had a heart attack every time I opened my email this week heheheh.

Special thanks to Wokeye and Aristander for being such solid allies. Also to DonC for tolerating my emotional rant. And of course to Pasha for hosting! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

No slight intended my friend. As I recall IH came back to find that he was one more VP closer to victory due to your efforts. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Ah, Micah! Of course big thanks to you as well! I had planned to come to IRC to tell you of the win - didnt think you were reading the thread anymore http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Your command of the abysian campaign was invaluable. The mountain of power site and huge fire gem income from it were game winners!
