Whenever I issue "CAPTURE PLANET" orders and invade, if my ground assault fails, my ships then eradicate the planet. Is there any way to avoid this behavior and leave the planet alone till later?
Thanks!

Only send troop transports. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif Actually, no, there's not; at least not that I've found. I usually get ticked at the AI and glass their planets out of spite anyway. I hate dealing with unruly population, and to me it's worth it to replace with my own, unless I've got a significant happiness bonus or it's an outpost in a system I already have colonized.

Maybe, if you can get the fleet strategy to not attack targets that don't have weapons it will not attack further if the ground assault fails. Or maybe you'd have to have all the ships strategies set to not attack targets without weapons. Some experimentation with strategies will probably be necessary. It does seem to be a flaw if you cannot get the AI to try again rather than fry the planet for successfully resisting a ground assault. This might make sense for a nasty xenophobic type race, but doesn't make sense for most races. And what if the planet has something important that you want to capture? The automatic destruction is not just unthematic then, but plain stupid.

If you specify in the strategy damage section "Damage until all weapons are gone" it should work.

Tried it and the fleet still bLasts the planet afterwards. I then tried the "Damage Percent Per Planet" and that did not work either.

What was the secondary strategy of your fleet?

The secondary strategy was "Optimal Range" I belive.

May be that's the cause. Try to change the secondary strategy e.g. to "don't get hurt".

To take over planets, I was using as first strategy "Optimal Fire Range", and as second strategy, "Drop Troops".
In my experience, this was better than the "Capture Planet" strategy, because with the Capture Planet strategy, a lot of times the AI sent first the Transport with the troops to die under the Planet defenses... but with the other strategy, the fleet first destroy the defenses, and then, take over the planet.
