In BM, what is the deal with planets in asteroid fields? They cannot be attacked, but are visible?

Why can't you attack them? Lack of Tachyon Scanners?

I wasn't sure if the planet was considered 'hidden' or not.

If the asteroid has no cloaking ability, they should be fair game.

Hmm, wonder why my ships will not attack. No issues attacking other planets.

Last I checked asteroids gave cloak of 16 so unless you have sensors that can see at level 16 or 17 (not sure which) any ships, bases, units etc will be hidden and you won't be able to engage them. This was how I understood it is supposed to work but whether it does is anyones guess - I haven't tried it. Planets must be an exception to this and aren't hidden, but perhaps like the ships, you can't engage them unless you have sensors able to penetrate the cloak from the asteroids. The fact that you can see the flag of the colony even though you don't have any ships or sensors which cover the ares is most likely an oversight that is yet to be fixed.

Also, the cloaking was completely screwed up with the last patch (1.66). Every turn ships uncloak and need orders to recloak. Even when you do that, they are visible to everyone.

That would be bad. I have 2 games where I am planning to use cloaking devices.

Oddly enough, my ship trying to attack then planet in the asteroid field, hit mines that the planet released.

Yeah, mines still detonate for cloaked vessels whether the cloak is from device or storm/asteroid etc.

Also, if you launch mines there, it won't blow up any ships they have there - they have to move into the mines for them to work.

Sounds like that planet is giving you some trouble http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. I think you need to research sensors that can see at level 17. If you can use Temporal or Pshycic ones it will be cheaper than getting standard Tachyon ones. With them you will be able to see any ships and also the number of mines they have there as well as actually be able to attack the colony. Then attack with mine sweepers escorting your ships. Freighters make good mine sweepers - the sweeper component goes towards the cargo requirement in Balance Mod anyway.

Something isn't right with the system... as those planets shouldn't be colonizable either, until you have the sensors.
