Preview for new 4x game, Lost Empire: Immortals

Looks interesting. Need more detail about ship building though. Not sure if it is like SE5/Moo or GalCiv.

What do you mean regarding ship construction?

That first screenshot looks a bit starcrafty.

It looks interesting. I have played Hearts of Iron from Paradox and that was good enough for me to make a mod. I know they didn't write it but their choice of games to distribute makes me optimistic.

There is also an Honorverse game coming out. Despite my dislike of the books I am interested in that.

SE5 has tactical combat, so ship construction is extremely varied and not linear.

Galciv ship combat is a rock paper scissor model and very linear.

I think thats a good way to describe it...

Ship design is very varied

Though ship combat is mostly strategic

Nothing linear about combat, I think

I know a lot, I just can't say a lot

Well when building a ship, are there different weapons with different characteristics? In SEV there are decisions to make when choosing Meson vs APB vs DUC vs High energy weapons.

Yes, there are weapons with different characteristics; for example, there are small-large weapons and point-defense weapons, with small ships using small weapons.

So combat is galciv style where you just watch?

Basically, you watch a movie of the battle if you want to see the battle; it doesn't automatically come up like in SE4/5.

Right, so you don't control your ships/units at all, correct?

Not during combat, it is much more strategy and less tactical fiddling

Q: How is Lost Empire different than Galactic Civilizations II, Space Empires 5, and Ascendancy?

Oh boy, well there are lots of differences, though we are of course heavily influenced by these games – as well as Master of Orion 2. But these are what come to mind:

- Pacing: We have worked a lot with the pacing of the game. We wanted to make a 4X-game where you quickly expand and start building fleets and do battle, thus players will find that Lost Empire is quite fast-paced for a 4X-game.

- Chi-Lung Race: We have also experimented a lot with the gameplay in the game by including the special Chi Lung Dragon-race, which plays very differently than the other race. For instance, you have to breed new creatures to put in fleets, and eat population to make your dragons grow, which makes Chi Lung a very expansive race, much more aggressive than the other six races.

- Science Tree: Further we choose to make a multi-headed, multilevel science tree. This means that players can keep improving any existing technology indefinitely instead of focusing on acquiring completely new techs. We have found from our many multiplayer sessions that this tends to create a much more varied game experience, when people choose to optimize different types of techs a lot.

What no Space Empires IV... WTF man!
