Let's do it! Who wants to host?

Okay, we have 12 players and Baalz is an alternate if someone drops out.

Teams:
TheNotoriousDoctorPraetorious, Hadrian II - Mictlan/Abysia
Shovah32, Lingchih - Pythium/Marignon
Foodstamp, Baalz - Ermor/Agartha
Revolution, BigDisAwesome - Man/R'lyeh
Peacekeeper, Aezeal - Patala/C'tis
Kristoffer, Quantum Mechanic - Atlantis/Bogarus

Introduce yourselves and start familiarizing yourselves with your nations if needbe. You can trade positions with other players if it is mutually agreeable.

Themes:
LOOK TO THE SKIES! - Man, R'lyeh
IT'S COLD, THERE ARE WOLVES AFTER ME - Atlantis, Bogarus
THE GIRLS ARE MINE - Mictlan, Abysia
THE SUN ALSO SETS - Ermor, Agartha
HOT LIZARD LOVE - Patala, C'tis
WEAR SILLY HATS OR ELSE - Pythium, Marignon

Following teams not in use http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif :
HAVE STEEL, WILL TRAVEL - Ulm, Pangaea
1. DEATH MAGIC, 2. ?, 3. PROFIT! - Caelum, Utgard
THE SUN ALSO RISES - T'ien Ch'i, Jomon
PROCESS OF ELIMINATION - Midgard, Arcoscephale

Team Assignment and Map:
Players will be randomly assigned to teams, this means:
a) Each player will be assigned to a team.
b) Each team will have two players assigned to it.

So both nation assignment and ally assignment is random. Or we could do fixed teams, if people prefer.

Then, each team will be assigned to two nearby start locations, either by me or the host.

Within each team, you can work out for yourselves who gets which nation and which start location.

If we are doing random assignment like last time - you can name up to two people (SECRETLY PLEASE! SEND ME A PM!) with whom you do *not* wish to be paired. You can also specify two of the nation pairs above which you do *not* wish to play.

I assume that we want LA R'lyeh (it isn't really a LA game without them!) so there will be water on the map.

I will scatter start locations on that map before assigning teams, or teams to start locations.

IP or E-mail:
Right now I have 1 person who can't play via IP, and 2 who can't play via e-mail, so I think IP wins atm.

Settings:
Graphs Off, Renaming On, otherwise standard.

Mods:
We will use some kind of hotfix mod, as provided by Edi for v3.15. Even if we don't actually need it, it allows for fixes to be hot-patched in when new patches come out. Can Agartha bless their undead units right now?
Other than hotfixes the mod will not make any changes.

Players so Far:
The Notorious Doctor Praetorious
Shovah32 (prefers IP)
Foodstamp
Revolution
Peacekeeper
Hadrian II
Kristoffer
Quantum Mechanic
Aezeal (declines Ermor, R'lyeh)
Lingchih (IP only)

I can host if you want a non-PBEM game.

DrPraetorious
March 9th, 2008, 09:24 PM
ano - there was much discussion of this in previous team games, and it was decided that this was the best way to balance it. The teams generally pair weaker nations with stronger ones, or pairs of average nations, and try to be somwhat respectful of the background story.

In previous games, people have been assigned to teams at random.

Okay, llamabeast will host when we have a quorum. I'm not in any particular rush to start, but we don't want to wait so long that people forget about the game and lose interest http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

EDIT: Or lch can host http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. We'll put it up to a vote for PBEM vs IP. I'm completely agnostic on the subject.

Hi.

Since the debacle with my last game (loosing internet connection for some weeks) I think I would like to join a new game. My work peak is about to end and I will have less to do at school, meaning I will be less tired at home, meaning I will have more spare time, meaning I would like to join a game.

It would be fun to play a team game. I hope I'm not exempt from team games, being a developer http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I have no particular preferences regarding nation. Hand me one that is weak or boring, and I might find some inspiration for later patching. I have some thoughts on Jomon summons that might develop if I am confronted with them, but that holds true for other nations as well. At least it is likely that I take another look at the nations sprites http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

IP or PBEM is fine with me.

Right now we appear to have *11* people. I think 12 would be perfect (easy for me to make the map, for one thing,) so we could add 1 more and have six teams arranged on spokes.

Assuming someone else signs up over the next few days, I'll make a 12-player/6-team map and post it, assign teams, give people some time to make pretenders and we can start this weekend?

DrPraetorious
March 12th, 2008, 09:29 PM
And I'd be happy to put together an e-mail game with the same map, but I don't have time to do two of these games at once.

DrPraetorious
March 13th, 2008, 01:45 AM
Here's the layout I'm aiming for.

There will be a body of water in the middle - R'lyeh will start in it. Man (R'lyehs ally) will start on the coast near R'lyeh.

The amphibious nations (and Marignon, since it can sail) will start on the coast. That's Ermor, Patala, Mictlan and Atlantis, all of which have amphibious troops, and Marignon, which at least has boats.

The other nations will start close to their allies, but towards the edge. This is a wheel-with-spokes arrangement that I think is fair, and helps to maximize conflict.

I'm trying to avoid giving any of the six start positions an above average hinterland, and I'm trying to arrange all this without going above 250 provinces (that's a little over 20 per player.)

Lingchih
March 13th, 2008, 03:10 AM
Just don't set me (Pythium) too far from my ally Marignon. I have no interest in the sea, but don't want to be too far from him.

Well, it's hyperbole to some degree, but most the teams are somewhat strong/weak pairs. Bogarus (strong)/Atlantis weak), Mictlan/Abysia, Marignon/Pythium, Patala/C'tis, even Ry'leh/Man (though man is pretty nice too). Ermor and Agartha though... Ermor is almost in a class by itself, and Agartha is arguably the most powerful live LE nation.

Foodstamp
March 13th, 2008, 09:26 PM

DrPraetorious
March 13th, 2008, 11:35 PM
I agree that R'lyeh/Man is pretty nice - but the other alternatives all struck me as worse (R'lyeh/Arco?R'lyeh/Utgard? R'lyeh/Caelum?), and R'lyeh/Midgard is just silly.

For Ermor's partner, I didn't want to give them too much non-death magic, and C'tis was taken.... it's very thematic, in any case. I'm not as impressed by LA Ermor as many people are, and while LA Agartha is one of my favorites, I've never thought they were that powerful. I'm prepared to be shown otherwise by the inestimable foodstamp, however http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I think we'll start late this weekend, if that's when people are comfortable. Monday is St. Patty's day, so I'll be wasted, but I can probably still manage to play.

DrPraetorious
March 17th, 2008, 12:56 AM
BDA - That was intended to compensate for the fact that the team in the lower right has, effectively, fewer neighbors. This makes them more vulnerable to the neighbors they do have, because they'll have a harder time defending one another. Other reason is that, if you look at that part of the map, few provinces have exactly 5 neighbors. I'm not sure if this is a net advantage or a death sentence.....

I could push the northern yellow capital a bit south, and the orange capitals a bit south, if people prefer - but the starts might have to be a bit funkier if I did that.

I will be pretty much unable to play until Friday. My video card in my PC died, and my Mac is very unstable playing Dominions. It reboots without warning after several minutes of playing the game.

I've been able to play my other MP games on my Mac by logging in, doing the bare minimum quickly, and logging out before the Mac reboots. But almost every game still requires several reboots before I can get my turn in.

A new video card has been ordered for my PC, and should be here by Friday. If we could wait to start til then, I would be most appreciative. If not, I can try to play turns on my Mac, but it will be iffy. Please feel free to replace me if this is a bother to the other players.

The finalized map, the map file (which only lch needs, but y'all can enjoy), and an empty mod which I'd like to use are all attached in a zip file.

The mod goes in your mods folder, the map goes in your map folder.

I propose that the game be QH with the first forced host in Monday night, to give people time to resolve any as-yet unknown technical difficulties.

I'm not too sure what color to call it...light yellow? anyhow the far right team (Marignon Pythium I think) it does not seem like the top person (marignon) would have much room to expand...and the bottom right of the map is very open. Perhaps the lower light yellow spot (pythiums start) should be moved down a couple provinces so they can better compete with green for the lower right of the map while allowing marignon more expansion room? In the first image of the map you showed it their start locations had been lower...you mentioned that marignon has to be coastal...but I think the other start could still be moved a bit lower.

I don't know...I could be crazy.

Also, out of curiosity, when I start a new game on the map on the starter provinces there are a couple magic sites that seem to be blank with the name "The Empty Slot" ...what are these?

Still like the map by the way, very nice work.

I can't speak for coobe but I will just throw in a recent quote from vfb in the game Figment that is currently ongoing where it appears that coobe is staling out.

Not great buuut...at least in the case of the Blessing game I think his leaving had to do with issues with the llamaserver...my issue is that when leaving the games he doesn't seem to post in the forums that he is quitting or why he is quitting.

There was at least one other game on my server which coobe abandoned at some time without any notice, one of the mod nations games I believe. I already had these things in mind when he signed up for Rhoscrowter again (though that game effectively died from lots more people than him staling and vanishing, same with Onomancy), but I am always giving people the benefit of doubt and hope that they pull their act together, this time. Up to his team partner if he sees it the same way, I guess.

I chatted with Shovah32. He apologized and said he has been very busy, and said it was fine if we wanted to replace him.

Alternatively, I could drop out of the game, and you could just remove the Pythium/Marignon team. I'm fine with it either way.

DrPraetorious
March 24th, 2008, 11:17 PM
Well, he should post here himself if he wants to drop out. I'm willing to wait - wasn't there another player who can't play until Wednesday anyway? - but if S32 wants to bow out, that's fine. If we're going to remove a start location, it should be the one Atlantis/Bogarus currently have, as that one is most central.

Sorry, but there's a problem, so I couldn't start the game yet. KO sent his pretender with a filename that the game doesn't recognize, no number at the end. Renaming fixed that. QM sent me a nation_78_2.2h file which surprised me, but I thought that maybe the devs didn't rename the nation files for the new nations, or something. But it doesn't work in base game and when I tried to recreate it with my Dom3 copy, catgod tells me that the pretender is a vanilla pretender for the "Bogus nation number 78" with no scales, dominion and magic picks at all. I don't think that's right. So QM will have to resubmit his pretender to me before we can start.

Aezeal, God of all the Universe to be, etc etc

Sees that one of his lesser brothers (the lord of Bogarus) has already fallen in combat, he hopes his followers will realize that this quick demise means he is not the true god of everything. His followers are welcomed to settle in our lands or to take over the realms of Bogarus in our name.

Nuvather, God of Bogarus, is not dead. Nuvather has visited Frysen. Only by walking through the gate of bone and ice can you visit Frysen. Other lesser gods are invited to visit Frysen as well.

- Frusen En - Voice of Frysen

Aezeal
March 29th, 2008, 02:54 PM
Yes we'll make sure frysen visits himself soon

- unidentified noble in Aezeal's court (Aezeal himself would never be so rude towards his brothers, obviously)

Kristoffer O
March 29th, 2008, 04:50 PM
Frysen, Wind of Woe, already occupies the Court of Bones. Nuvather has been called to his side to master the secrets of death. Nuvather has proven to be a most adept student.

- Frusen En, Voice of Frysen

Aezeal
March 29th, 2008, 04:57 PM
It might be best to let Frysen sit in his court of boners with his servant Nuvather and have them enjoy eachothers boner. It'll be up to our REAL god to close the aforementioned gate of bone and ice and seal it for all eternity while ruling the rest of the multiverse.

If we'd ever care to see their faces again (however unlikely) we'd just summon them as insane tartarians in about an era or 3-4.

- Royal Jester of Aezeal

Hey, ive become really short on time lately and i dont have time to play my turns. Im going to be seeking subs in my other 2 games and for this one if you like you can play the C'tis turns(my password is "*****") or if you like you guys can sub me out.

Subs Ahoy! Argitoth plays C'tis fairly well. Although he tends to clog up the boards with boastful posts.

I'm a grumpy one. You will find my armies extremely orderly without one mage out of place in any battle. I don't like any nation who thinks they are stronger than me. I like to prove otherwise.

I will sub C'tis if it is allowed.

Sorry, I've been unexpectedly parted from my dominions computer the last day or so. I should be able to take my turn about 8 hours from now... if it will host before then I'd appreciate a couple hour extension.

I had a look around here on turn 6. Let's just say that some of the things I saw weren't pretty - seems like a few of the senior players are underestimating indies, or something. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Aezeal
April 2nd, 2008, 03:32 PM
Well I had a little indie problem too, 3 air mages spamming orb lightning are not what I expected and are also tipping the favor fo level 5 indies against my expanding army... but all that is past now and I guess that when I site search there I should find something sweetish

DrPraetorious
April 2nd, 2008, 03:33 PM
That was quick - sub filled before I even noticed the vacancy http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

I'd definitely like for people to get extensions - provided it doesn't become endemic. Also, when new subs come in it's generally good form to give them an extra day to familiarize, although this early in the game I suppose that may not be needed.

Aezeal
April 2nd, 2008, 03:36 PM
yeah Í'm all in favor with extensions, mostly since while I think I usually will do my turn within 12 hours I do have evening and night shifts which can mess up my available time from time to time

Foolish spy, when you are caught your head will be shipped to my capital where you can hold no secrets from the lord of the dead. Once I have heard from your own lips the name of your liege your headless corpse will march along thousands more as I fetch his head to rest beside yours as it is buried in a pit of sand to spend eternal unlife devoid of sensation contemplating the consequences of courting attention of the damned.

What would one do if one would encounter hostile triple blessed (say astral, fire, water) mictlan jaguar warrior or whatever the critters are called.

Any general advice?

It is with great shock and dismay Frusen En discovered the evil ways of the Jomonese pretender. Surviving the treacherous assassination attempt he now calls every nation to strike against the Pretender of Jomon, most wicked of Lords.

Heleon, God of Abysia, has been silenced by the will of Frysen. Frusen En, Voice of Frysen, accidentally met the false god on the battlefield and smote him with holy power. Heleon was struck dumbfounded and unable to speak.

All hail Frysen, teacher of philosophy, who giveth and taketh the ability to speak!

@Aezeal, jaguar are elite troops, so the best counter to them is to use your best infantry you can get to fight them.

Let them roar like the fire storm.
Let them roar in despair.
For they are without guidance.

Come to Frysen and the comfort of the stillness of ice and bones.
In the wispering bones guidance and comfort will be found.
Abandon your silent god and embrace the call of Frysen.

I was considering what to do, but Patala just saved me from making the decision by attacking me. I'll sign NAPs with anyone else who wants them, 3 or 6 turns notice as people prefer. Offer is good for as long as I'm at war with Patala provided you don't attack me or my ally first.

Aezeal
April 7th, 2008, 02:36 AM
Ah Dr P, let me be honest.

I actually didn't want to attack you, my ally did say I should. So I made the order and wanted to talk to my ally more... then I did save and quit... and my turn was processed anyway... I was not pleased but couldn't be helped.

but wait do I see next turn.. a 190 persons large ARMY behind the province I took.

So IMHO your mind was already made up, 190 person armies are NOT used to take indies.

PS you must have the most insane kind of luck to get flagellants when having your bless.. as if the jags are not enough to deal with.

Hi!

How much communication is normally done through in-game messages and PM respectively. I'm finding myself inclined to use in game messages, and a bit unsure if PM's are considered unethical and if so, under what circumstances.

I'm also finding myself roleplaying more in messages than in PM's.

Aezeal
April 7th, 2008, 01:07 PM
ingame is too slow for real communications IMHO only for flavor texts

I'm talking on this forum mainly to get things done

thinks like asking NAP's, agreeing on borders etc.. can't really be done in-game.

Baalz
April 7th, 2008, 01:30 PM
FYI the Highlander game I'm moderating was started with the rule "no out of game communication", which has been seen as very novel, but at least one person left in frustration. I'd say 90% of the communications I get are through the forums and I've never known anybody to feel that was unethical.

Frysen does not covet thew throne of bone.
Frysen has a frozen coast full of bones.
There are more bones on the coast than the Arssartut can count. And they count.

We, the people of the frozen coast, on the other hand covet food, and fish have become exceedingly rare in the border provinces. Two out of three fishes are floating with their pale bellies swollen in the darkened sunlight.

The clouds of darkness billowing out from the wasted land has led our seal hunters to the conclusion that you, vile queen, is the scourge of the fish and enemy of the world. For the sake of the piscine lifeforms your unnatural existence must be unmade.

Frusen En, Voice of Frysen
