View Full Version : OT: BSG - wtf?

I watched the Battlestar Galactica special last Friday night, and I sure was suprised toward the end. Tori, Tigh, Tyrol and Anders are all Cylons? I'm still trying to catch up last season as I'm watching the dvd set for season 3, but that totally floors me. And what makes them the "special" 5? And who will be the 12th Cylon? If it's Adama, I'll throw away all of my BSG dvd's. That would make no sense at all. I think they were implying that Starbuck might be one, but I was trying to watch teh show with my nephew and son playing in the same room. I might have missed a detail or two. Anybody know more about this? I don't visit the official websites or any of the fansites that might be out there, so I'm clueless. I'll have to watch the rest of the dvd's (I finished watching 4 out of the 6). I just can't wait to watch season 4. I have a chance to now, and I'll watch as many episodes as I can so I don't have to wait months to find out what happened.

As I understand it, because of the writer's strike, there will be half of the remaining episodes next season, and the other half the season after that. So it's a long wait.
FWIW, I wasn't too keen on on middle of the series. Too many US in Iraq parallels. And it's a little gross each captured female cylon gets gang raped or attempted or beaten up or whatever.
But I am enjoying this -- who're the final cylons -- storyline, ever since the Eye of Jupiter episode, I've finally been pulled in to this gritty scifi drama.
There's a BS wiki that people have been filling in pretty heavily, they work in conjectures into the articles for each episode, and as the facts are revealed, they change the question to a link to the revealing episode. So you can catch up.

Here's an 8-minute synopis of the whole show starting from the first episode and it steps you thru the entire series until the end of season 3. Well, as much as possible in 8 minutes. And it has some funny moments.

OK, I've finally finished watching all of the Season 3 episodes. It still doesn't explain out of all of the billions of humans that existed prior to the cylon attack, these 4 people are still living. Just the odds of them surviving the attack were astronomical, let alone to be in or near persons of power. You got Tigh, who's apparently been a Cylon for 30 years without knowing it, and is a bosom buddy to Adama AND second in command of the Galactica (although a pretty lousy one). There's Tory, who's Roslin's chief of staff. I'm still wandering if Lucy Lawless's charachter had anything to do with killing off Billy, since we never even saw Tory until Bill was killed off. Awful darn coincidental, seems to me. There's Chief Tyrol, who's the only surviving CPO of teh ship, with access to all of the Vipers and Raptors. And there's Anders, who through his marriage to Starbuck, has access to the pilots. How did the Cylons know where to place these people? And who's the 5th one? Have you noticed that all of them have a T in their name? From the premier episdoe, we found out that Anders middle initial is T. Could that mean Kara Thrace is teh 5th cylon? We only have about 19 episodes to find out.

Perhaps there are different Cylons? It's obvious one group of Cylons are trying very hard to kill them, but there might be others.
Anyway, isn't it pretty obvious Kara is a cylon? If she isn't then she'd have to have psychic powers( she says she can feel they're jumping in the wrong direction ), and that'd be even more silly.

I suppose we could start commenting in this thread about how we figure the last episodes will go. But, given that there are no fewer (by my count) 3 more prequel series to come out yet, I'm figuring even when we see the last episode, we wont see the answer.
'Course, I like the spoiler Edward James Olmos related at one time: I can't find the exact quote on the Battlestar Wiki, but basically the fleet jumps into orbit around Earth, and we promptly nuke the entire fleet, and Dubya appears and says "Did we get 'em?" And his Cylon advisors say "Good job."

I am firmly of the opinion when the Galactica finds Earth the Cylons will appear soon behind them. Earth's Imperial Home Fleet will then blow the Cylons out of space in about 5 seconds.
I used to watch each episode as a friend managed to give them to me, but I lost interest when after the New Caprica bit they just spend episode after episode being all philosophical and eventually have an entire episode seemingly devoted to beating each other in the head. Hard to reach a decision when you get brain damage.

I don't think you're too far off. I personally feel that Baltar is a 13th unknown/unrevealed Cylon. I think that he is the Imperial Leader that they used to mention in the old show, but was never seen. He's just being groomed with all of these adversaries before he's aware of who he really is.

One thing I want to know and that is this. How did the Cylons channel Jimmy Hendrix? I didn't even recognize that song until they played it at the end of the last episode of season 3. That was some lamo version of it. I love "All Along The Watchtower", but couldn't recognize it.

I dunno, maybe Bob Dylan and George Harrison were trading bong hits in the dish of a radio telescope, and Bob goes to George, "Naw, man, new, wait a sec, man. The Jimi thing was cool, but let's hear Ravi play it." And then he took it and ran with it, but they never recorded it, cause they all got the munchies the next morning? Or something.
I watched the reruns before the new season, to be in the best mode for it, and the inserted lines were funny, at one time, a drunk Saul Tigh says, "There's too much confusion ..." I'll have to watch those two episodes again, see if other lines are worked in ... 'though I figure I would have noticed, "businessmen drink my wine, ploughmen dig my herbs"

Yeah, I know, I was just being funny, and trying to work in a technobabble explanation. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif FWIW, I like the idea that the signal made it to the remote nebula, as some sort of audio beacon from the 13th tribe. What does it mean, I have to wonder.
And I liked the breezy sitar version they wrote for BSG. You have no idea, how many people, on other forums, have no idea that Bob Dylan wrote the song first, everyone just screams, "What did they do to Jimi's song? We wanna hear Jimi." When corrected, they actually get belligerent, some refuse to believe Bob Dylan wrote it.
I truly don't know for sure, one way or the other, if Dylan and Harrison ever met, it's just when I hear a sitar, I think of Ravi Shankar, and George Harrison, and well, marijuana, and Bob Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix. Of course, radio telescopes and nebulas just follow logically, after that.

Back in the second season, there was an interesting scene where the humans captured two Brother Cavel cylons, and the cylons described the role of their preachers as exactly the opposite of human preachers:
President: Where did the Cylons go -- back to their homeworld?
Cavil#1:Well I'de rather not say just now, uh let's just say we have other plans.
Adama(cynically): New marching orders by your One True God.
Cavil#2: There is no God.
Cavil#1: Supernatural divinities are the primitive's answer for why the sun goes down at night.
Cavil#2: At least that's what we've been telling the others for years.
Cavil#1: Can't really prove it one way or the other of course.
But in the latest episode, seems that the One True God is proving the cylon preachers wrong, and that the 'primitive' cylons who worship their One True God (love?) are right.
And Six loves Baltar. And Baltar loves everybody...
...Hey what ever happened to their bizzarro cross-bred foursome baby? She should be about two or three by now. What will her first word be?

There is a real concerted effort going on to have the old show remastered with replaced up to day special effects. Gone would be all of those campy stock footage and reused special effect shots. Look at the success of the Remastered Star Trek OS episodes to see why. (Done with care it makes the best better.)

I like that idea. I can't afford to buy the remastered Star Trek right now, but since we're only talking 18 episodes, it might be more affordable for me if they did that to BSG.
On the idea of an obscure character showing up to be the 12th Cylon, what about Boxey? He was in the mini-series, and I think an episode or two of the 1st season, but I haven't seen him since then. What do you think?

What I want to know is this, in the early episodes they couldn't get pilots, but now they have a crap load of them. The continuity of the show really sucks. The cylons blow up a ship with 600 people on it and the number still is like 49ooo or something.

I'm inclined to disagree because, despite the pirating, the orders for the DVD were several times more than expected. Now back in 2007 JMS asked the studio to speed up production, but the studio said the guild wouldn't strike. When they did, production was placed on hold and I think it still remains in development hell at the moment.

Sorry to be a spoilsport, but I didn't like the new BSG serie from the beginning. The first episode (when the Cylons destroyed the diplomatic station, or whatever it was) was absolutely cool. But as soon as the story introduced multiple copies of characters I lost interest. Also the camera-work during battles is in my opinion horrendous. Lee's now the interim president. I can see that becoming permanent if Roslin dies before the end of the show. And did you get the editing of the trailer on last Friday's show? Lucy Lawless's charachter (Deana or Briana or whatever it is) telling someone that they're the 5th special cylon, and they sure made it look like she was talking to Roslin. Possible, but I seem to remember the cylons saying several times that they were 'forbidden' to discuss or even think about the five. And due to her insistance on breaking that particular rule, and just in general how "roguish" she had become, they decided to box her. After all... only Baltar was with her when she had her epiphany at the temple on the algae planet, and once she rezzed from that experience, she told her compatriots that she knew who the final five were, but that was AFTER they had already decided to box her series.

himo.
That's the way I understood it.
Uh, hello all... LTNS. I'm surprised by the amount of negative reaction to the show overall on this board. Personally, I think it's some of the best TV written and produced since West Wing. I'm slightly annoyed with Lee Adama ascending to the presidency in a single episode, but other than that I think the whole thing's a rip-roarin' good time.

I'm with you, TT. I don't know why a lot of people don't like this show. I think it's a great show and may be worthy of being called a classic along with Star Trek and Babylon 5. But the season's halfway over with, and I can't wait to see what happens when they finally find Earth (which may be this Friday, going by the trailer).

it seems to me a lot of the negative reaction stems from it not being what people expected or wanted. For me, that's the most captivating part.
The first episode, 33 was amazing in my opinion.
My biggest complaint on the whole series in that apparent aimless plan of the cylons who, after wiping out humanity is playing with the survivors like a cat with a wounded mouse. That and many plot arcs could've been carried out longer and fleshed out in detail and made a whole lot better.
Such as Pegasus, new Caprica, the black market/zarek thing, baltar's trial and so on.
Oh, and I felt the revealed 4 cylons was a major cop-out.

I don't know about cop-out. I'm just amazed at the astronomical odds that 5 hidden Cylons, out of all of the billions of humans who died, are among the survivors. And most of them are well-placed, except for Anders, who's only Starburck's husband and a fledgling Viper pilot. But if Balter isn't the 5th Cylon, I wonder who it will be.

I missed Friday's episode. Went and saw teh Incredible Hulk instead. Much, much better than that 2 hours of wasted space that came out in 2003. But was it worthing missing BSG for? Only depends on what happened. I'll try to catch it this Friday, but then Get Smart is coming out also. I'll see if we can go see it on Saturday instead. I hate missing BSG when i can avoid it.

The writer's strike put a small lag in the episodes, and with the post production needed, the episodes would be ready too late in the season, so ... the producers decided to push the last half of the final season way into the future, say 2009, some time. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

It is, sort of. The season is being split into two parts due to the writer's strike. The final ten (although there's talk of adding one or two additional) episodes won't air until first quarter '09. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

It's hard to avoid coming to that conclusion, when the producers openly say that they'll have the episodes sooner, but don't want to release them, because they'll be in competition with the US football season. I read that and I'm like "WTF?, I've got TiVo. VCR's have been around long enough for most people to have them. And maybe a diehard fan would rather see an episode of BSG instead of one game." I just don't get it.
Well, like I said before, they probably won't resolve everything in the final few episodes, there will probably subtle hints buried in Razor and Caprica about what's really happened. It's hard for me to keep track of these -- is Razor done, and soon to be shown, or did we see it already. And is Caprica still on the drawing board, or what?
I don't think I want to get sucked into another serial. But then again, what else has the SciFi channel got that's good?
Azselendor
June 21st, 2008, 01:57 AM
Unfortunately, ratings don't count Tivo or VCR's.
The decision to split the season into two chunks existed since season 2 and many networks are now treating the mid-season hiatus as a tv season break. Why? Because why sell 20 episodes of TV in a boxed set for 49.99 when you can sell 10 episodes in a TV boxed set for 39.99.
I blame you Brian Singer. That was your idea!

SciFi has taken to delaying series for upwards of 9-months to a year now. Normally breaks are 4-6 months over the summer season when viewership drops due to summer travel and whatnot.
I personally think scifi has been having a lot of securing advertisers and is using the extra time to sell more ads plus scifi is interested in more marketable items, hence the surge in tv movies and miniseries on the network
Plus I do recall RDM stating he rewrote or kicked back the entire back half of the season after the writer's strike to improve overall quality of the finale which we now know won' include arrival at earth.

I just wished that when they had found our Earth, it would have been in a modern setting, not 150,000 years ago! Can't wait for the dvd set to come out to see them again.

If I was the sort of person susceptible to outward expressions of positive emotion then I'd be laughing my head off. I just love that I quit caring years ago rather than waste time watching it.
I didn't realise it was finishing, but then again I haven't been paying attention. All I knew was something about taking a year off, or only having half a season, and then suddenly I hear it's going out with a 10 hour marathon or something. I looked it up after it finished and could hardly believe it, but then I can't think of any other way it could have finished, except the one I've had for years. It was the endless inner philosophy, along with losing respect for the bunch of them, that put me off and the ending I read about seems to at least be an inevitable result of turning the whole thing into philosophy....IN SPACE.
I've got nothing against philosophy, in fact it's one of my study hobbies, but you can have science fiction and then you can have sitting down and contempleting things. Both at once just gets boring, much as I understand people dislike the Matrix films (note: I do however love that the head machine that solves the problem at the end is literally called the Deus Ex Machina).
Actually I'm at a loss to understand some of how it ended, which is only natural since I stopped caring 3 or 4 years ago, but I'm not even interested enough to seek clarification of the bits I don't understand.

I was wondering how long it would take someone to resurrect (pun intended) this thread after the abysmal series finally.
Its like the entire last half of season five was relegated to the WTF writers. You know the type, the people who don't know how to write, but think that what they are writing is the best thing ever written.
I don't know why they ran from the show, but one thing is clear, the talented writers RAN from this show like vipers off a dying Battlestar.
So this entire time, the imaginary friend of Baltar, Six, was a, get this, an angle. WTF!
The unknown missing final, (Final????) Five were in fact the first five and were kicked out of the cylon club house by their "children." WTF!
Earth really wasn't EARTH. WTF!
Kerra (sp) returns after going missing but she really isn't Kerra any more. Lets have her find her wrecked viper and dead body on a nuked out Earth, and NEVER explain what happened. WTF!
I can go on and on and on. But why, the show is over, whats done is done, and I want my time back that I wasted on watching this show since they found New Caprica. I prey that those in power never ever ever let those who made this show near a pen again. I beg God that these losers are never ever again allowed to re-envision another TV series. (Next up, RDM re-envisions Star Trek the Original Series... oh wait, thats JJ Abrams job now.)
Randallw
March 25th, 2009, 09:38 PM
One problem I've read about is that two of the first five were characters which weren't even there from the begginning, being characters that were introduced for whatever reason and then popularity made them permanent. In other words there was never any plan from the beggining for them to be main characters. Clearly the writers had no plan from the start and just randomnly picked a bunch of characters people wouldn't expect because after all those characters were never planned.
I can imagine what it's like for people who have been watching. I have a series of novels called Chung Kuo where rebels are fighting against a worldwide Chinese government. It was always an eight book series, but suddenly at the end, after decades of general espionage, intrigue and war the leader of the rebellion turns into a giant transdimensional spider Chaos spirit, and they save their world by using the help of an alternate version of one of the main characters who wasn't abandoned as a child and in a world where the Chinese didn't take over. WTF? I thought, thinking he just didn't have a plan for ending. Lately I've read he asked for a ninth book but his publishers wouldn't let him.

You lucky dog. My advice to you is to never ask that question again. In fact, never ask anything about the three stooges again. And get yourself one of those filtering browser proxies (like Proxomitron (http://www.proxomitron.info/)) and setup a filter to kill anything that mentions "three stooges" before it even reaches your browser. You'll need it to remain sane when that movie comes out. There will probably be a revival of the old movies, too.
If you don't follow my advice you'll eventually find yourself exposed to one of the worst mind-f***'s ever produced by American "pop culture". The Stooges are even worse than the stupidest, trashiest Saturday Morning cartoons ever produced. Yes, even worse the Rubik's Cube: the cartoon.

Last week I was wathcing looking after my 4 year old Nephew and we were watching the episode of the Simpsons where someone shoots Mr Burns. I told my Nephew that we had to guess who shoots him and as each person was portrayed in such a light as to make them a future suspect he would cry out that they were the one. The he started shouting
"him, the coffee man!"
"What coffee man?"
"The man who runs the coffee shop where Homer goes to drink"

I haven't seen it for years either. It's an ok movie. It's not great, but it's worth getting on video when there's nothing else to watch. The best bit is where when they capture criminals they castrate them to make them more docile as slaves, except priests just in case there is soemone who'd get pissed off at having his reps gelded. One bad guy knocks the monk out, steals his robes and then walks free.
I'm not a great fan of Serenity/Firefly myself. I couldn't get past the title sequence of the tv series and I tried watching the movie but found it boring. I admit that probably you have to empathise with the characters from the series but I preferred the agent guy. Also I found the main characters unappealing since they're rebels and I can't stand the "opposition to authority as heroic" stuff.
