Ok, so after searching the board I'm a little lost.
How do I mod the background screen of the gui?

There are certain image files in the main directory that can be changed. One of them is the head that's on the "shoulders", I've changed them into a neutral swirl a long time ago.
It's probably easiest to search for the GUI mods made a while ago. Here's (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showthreaded.php?Number=498355 ) one and I think there are few others... here (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showthreaded.php?Number=509953). I didn't test if the latter's download actually works...

Like Endo said, it's as easy as replacing some images. You'll probably want to backup the originals.
I've done it before (replaced the Greek heads with dragons, with nice results), but sadly GUI mods are one of the few mod types that are much rarer in Dom3 than they were in Dom2.

Another one (that I did one year ago today http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ) is HERE (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=509533).
