But with patch today are you still switching people to other races? IT will be quite sad not to see new races in that game.

Xietor, when is the deadline for sending pretenders?
Xietor
May 27th, 2008, 06:48 PM
Here is the deal.
June 1 is the deadline for Pretenders.
Unless the Patch comes out today, we will be starting on June 1 without the new races. If the patch does come out today, dryunda will be playing EA Hinnom, otherwise she is
playing LA Mictlan. But I do not want to do a lot of race switching and lottery picks involving the other 2 new races
at this late stage.
Unless I hear from llamabeast today about the research mod, we will just go with research on the difficult level. While there have been many great ideas about a tiered research mod, with normal research at lower levels and very hard at the top, i guess it has not been that easy to implement.
Maybe with a year to ponder it, we can get one ready for next year's game.
llamabeast was going to make a Kingmaker Mod combining the mod that allows all 3 eras to be played, with the mod that nerfs gem producing items, and bans 4 globals from being cast, and fixes Mists of deception. He was also going to update the Mega Age Mod to include the 3 new races, but if the patch does not come out today, that will be one less item on his plate.
I have sent Evilhomer a PM inquiring if he is still available to replace james 243, but he has not replied yet.
No doubt he fears the wrath of those he killed in last year's Megagame!
However, Gregstrom is ready to step in as the 2nd alternate, and he may be taking Sum1lost's place in any event if he cannot find a sub and notify me soon that he has found one.

That's disappointing. The new patch will be out before the game starts. It therefore seems a waste to omit the new races, especially since we've already invested so much time waiting to this point.
Even if it doesn't come out until tomorrow, those playing the new races will still have 3 days to design before June 1st.
New-Race-Players: will you really feel at a disadvantage if you have only have 72 hours to design your pretender?

Hey there,
I've been working on adding in all the descriptions, briefs, etc. into the single age mod. I should be done before the game starts. Just throwing it out there in case ya'll would like to use it. I imagine Llamabeast could just copy and paste over what he's put together?
Xietor
May 27th, 2008, 07:38 PM
Slobby-that sounds awesome. Send it to Llamabeast and I am sure he will use it.
Pretender Selections were received on May 6, and were completed on May 7. So I think we have been very accommodating in waiting as long as we have for the patch. And while the argument that 1 more day won't hurt has appeal, it can be applied indefinitely. Which is why I set an early starting date of May 15, and a final starting date of June 1.
The game will start on June 1.
1st post should answer the independent question:middle era,
default strength(5).
Edit: I spoke with llamabeast. There have been a myriad of issues arise with the research mod. So we will just use the difficult research setting.

My spell-level changing mod doesn't work? There might be technical issues or somesuch.
I ought to be able to get something working quickly, although I'm quite busy the next few days.
llamabeast
May 28th, 2008, 07:55 PM
Ah, no, no technical problems with your mod Dr P, I just didn't know it existed! Having found it, it should now be easy to use it for KingMaker if people choose to do so.
Okay everyone, there are a few options for research in this game. They are Difficult, Very Difficult, and Dr P's mod. Dr P suggests using Very Difficult Research and moving levels 2 to 6 down by one (to 1 to 5), leaving level 6 essentially empty (see here (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showthreaded.php?Number=603266)).
Okay, so finally, to summarise, here are the research costs to reach each level for each option:
...........Normal...Diff...Very Diff....DrPMod
Level 1:.....40 .....60.......100.........100
Level 2:....100.....160.......260.........100
Level 3:....200.....320.......520.........260
Level 4:....360.....580.......940.........520
Level 5:....620....1000......1620.........940
Level 6:...1040....1680......2720........1620
Level 7:...1720....2780......4500........4500
Level 8:...2820....4560......7380........7380
Level 9:...4600....7440.....12040........12040
So the research costs under Dr. P's mod are basically similar to the Hard setting for low level spells, and the same as Very Hard for high level spells. Personally I think this is pretty clever, and recommend using it. However, the decision is ultimately down to Xietor. Since he has already said we should go with just Hard research, and the game is now close to starting, he may wish to stick to that decision, which would be a very reasonable thing to do. It is my fault this has not all been worked out before!

I like Dr. P's mod as well, as long as the 1st level spells can be set at normal. Having 1st level spells on very difficult is all well and good when you are playing the Niefel Giants, but when you are man trying to fend off said niefel Giants, you want lightning as soon as possible!
DrPraetorious
May 28th, 2008, 08:52 PM
Unfortunately, that is not possible.
It *is* possible to set the level 1 spells to level 0 - and I think this is a good idea, myself. But there's no intermediate setting for them.
llamabeast

Incidentally, it has been brought to my attention that LA Ulm is not in use.
People may not have noticed this - but LA Ulm got a *big* power boost in the latest patch. The new black priests are extremely powerful, especially in combination with the cool national spells they've been given. LA Ulm will still require finesse to play, but with a forge bonus on E(ESFA) units, you can do some real damage.
Xietor
May 28th, 2008, 08:57 PM
As Llamabeast points out, it is the same amount of research to get to level 2. And you do not get anything at level 1 that is going to slow down a good rush nation anyway.
So after being enlightened, I am fine with Dr. P's mod unless
we get a storm of objections.

There will be a Kingmaker Mod that will have everything except Worthy Heroes, which will remain separate.
And it is possible that QM may release WH 1.9 before June 1.
Otherwise we will just use WH 1.8. The Pretender Bug is annoying, but I doubt anyone selects the Hornblower to lead their race!

Dryaunda, if you want to play your new race, you have until June 1 to get the pretender selection in. I was not trying to be unreasonable or deprive you of your 1st selection.
That will open up la mictlan for Evilhomer, who is selecting that race if it opens up. So there were a lot of "ifs" involved with the race selection, which is why i needed to make a decision. But it turns out the patch is out, and you have time to make your pretender, so all is good.
Coobe, it was my belief you wanted Midguard because you liked Midguard. Not because the patch was delayed. I just woke up, and I have not had any coffee. We will have a very limited lottery for the 2 new races.
Anyone wanting to trade their existing race for a new race THAT DID NOT GET THEIR 1ST SELECTION, knowing the time constraints in getting in a pretender send me a pm. It is 9 am New Orleans time right now. Lottery will be closed 9pm tonight new orleans time. New Orleans is -5 GMT.
At that time the winners will be announced. But in the interest of my sanity, there will be no further switching of races. So if KO gets a new race, that frees up Yomi. but if you have say Man, you cannot switch to Yomi. Sorry.

Depends on your nation of course. With Man, simple lighting bolt spam should be sufficient, they don't have nearly the hp of elephants though they cost almost as much so you'll see them in similar numbers. 6-8 eagle eye buffed lightning spammers should be pretty devastating to them I'd imagine - if you're not gonna see more than about 20 of them for a rush and you can kill 3 or so per round on top of what your infantry can do and it takes them 4-5 rounds to close and fight through your PD...well, they're not gonna be too scary by the time they hit your reserves behind your PD. Tangling vines should work decently to string them out as well and let your high damage dealing troops deal with them piecemeal. Tramplers are a whole lot less effective when they don't hit in a big wall of flesh and instead each one gets surrounded.
If you stuck with Arco no worries, just a couple of your own elephants would stop them from trampling long enough for your mages to do whatever it is you have researched (lots of choices).

I am looking over the Kingmaker Mod and testing it a bit. Clams are very steep. 4w2n equates to 25 water 10n for 1 clam.
of course with a hammer the cost is reduced to 18 w 7 nature.
The other gem producing items are only raised 1 path, which is a smaller increase then clams. Clams being much more game changing with the wish. Thoughts on the 4w 2n clam?
Twan
May 31st, 2008, 09:49 PM
I think fetishes will be the main magical economy items with these settings. For 30 gems you can make 2, when a clam cost 35 (then alchemize or trade the production for pearls if you want).
It may be a bad point for balance as the few nature/fire nations (or lucky players finding enchantress) are the only able of large fetish hoarding (taking a n/f pretender isn't sufficient as there is no fire/nature summon like the naiad allowing to go from one fetish a turn to many).
Then the good point is : it's harder for Rlyeh and other wish capable nations to make them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Fetishes are considerably worse than clams. They're terrible amounts of micro, they cost you upkeep because you have to put them on disposable commanders, and fire gems are probably some of the worst in the game, unlike astral which can be used to wish, or to be alchemized.

Probably, a bit too much of a nerf. 3w 2n is probably enough.
Even if it does benefit Baalz and Ma Oceania! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I think the 4w 2n clam is good. If you lower the cost much the game is in danger of degenerating into a clam hoarding rush. After all, 18 w is only about 50% more than the standard 11 w.

Fetishes are considerably worse than clams. They're terrible amounts of micro, they cost you upkeep because you have to put them on disposable commanders, and fire gems are probably some of the worst in the game, unlike astral which can be used to wish, or to be alchemized.
Having to make one commander every 9 or so turns and pay him to produce about 7 or 8 fire gems isn't that expensive.
Anyway I agree fetish price is fine as it is, because they have some problems clam don't have (the main isn't having to recruit commanders, but having to wait 1 to 3 turns before a fetish produce gem each time you change the owner - as they only work well on commanders with several afflictions- it may balance the cost difference, as long the fetish hoarder don't have access to commanders with more than 10 hp).
The only thing I was saying is : if the few nations able to fetish hoard base their strategy on them (with players supporting the microgestion) they may have a consequent advantage as, even if you want to finally produce other gems, making 7 fetish is better than the 3 clams you'd have for the same price - and especially as, with our number of players, finding trade partners interested by fire gems and paying more gems than alchemy for them shouldn't be extremely hard).

After making a fetish farm once I will *never* do that again because of the micro involved. I got so fed up with trying to figure out each turn who was close to death that I ended up forging rings of regen for each of my fetish holders...:/

I had something like a 100 fetish economy in a recent game as Lanka and it was pretty good, believe me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif. Yes, it requires micro but why are you afraid of it. Outcome of a fetish is even bettee than outcome of a clam not only because of alchemizing fire gems to pearls but also because there're several very good endgame fire spells (Flames form the sky being the most obvious) that can really ruin the day of any attacker.
Also one of the biggest fetish-hoarding nations is Machaka who has even less problems with them as Black Sorcerers never die of disease and don't gather many other afflictions when diseased. Also nations with healing like MA T'ien Ch'i may equip cheap researchers with fetishes and set some Apothecaries to constantly heal. Your mages will almost never get feeblemind (mute does nothing for mages with one pick) and if you remove a fetish when mage has 2-3 hp he will most probably stay alive and may be equipped again. So you really don't have to even recruit additional commanders and pay extra upkeep - just use what you have!
I don't even mention nations who have commanders with native recuperation. These have almost no problems at all - just watch them and remove fetish in time.
Yes, it is micro. But it is extremely cheap gem factory as well.

LLAmabest has finished the Kingmaker Mod. He redid the banners so all the nations look different and spent much work on it. So those who play in the game owe him a debt of thanks.
There are others as well, who contributed mightily, such as Slobby, with the race descriptions, Dr. P, with the research mod, and of course the original authors of the single age mod, gandalf, and the banners and streamers mod, etc.
Llamabeast also reports 52/61 players have sent in pretenders. There is about 12 hours left. And there will be no extensions. Hopefully the rest will get their selections in on time. I still have 2 subs waiting in the wings, who will get 24 hours to get in their pretenders after the deadline passes, then the game will proceed with the number we have.
At a minimum, that will be 54. Though I will pm 3 more subs as well.

Here is the mod! It contains 3 .dm files:
KingMaker.dm, which we'll use for this game.
sns3.dm, which is Zepath's Standards and Streamers, updated to include the new nations
llamaBanners.dm, which is the same as sns3.dm apart from the fact that a few nations are modified to make them look more distinguishable.
Only the first one is needed for this game (it has llamaBanners built in), but being as you have to download all the banner pictures anyway I thought I might as well throw the other two mods in.
So, the overall contents of KingMaker.dm are:
- Xietor's, banning spells and changing the costs of gem-producing items
- Slobby's completed single-age mod
- Twan's Mists of Deception fix
- A research mod produced with an ingenious script by Dr.P. Spells of levels 1-6 are lowered by 1 level so that these early game spells aren't too hard to reach on the Very Difficult research mode we'll be using. Note that the levels for Construction aren't changed, as it isn't possible to change them. Hopefully this will affect everyone roughly equally.
- Zepath's Standards and Streamers, with new standards and a number of changes by me.
Edit: Removed faulty version of mod. Will upload new version ASAP.
Edit2: Uploaded new version of mod. This is the same file as I have just posted anew several pages on.

Xietor
June 1st, 2008, 01:41 PM
If you look in the mod forum, twan describes his "fix" to Mists of deception. Basically it is 9 rounds of Mist spell with phantasmal beasts, ghost wolves, and phantom warriors coming from the sides like the spell howl. Pretty nice fix. 2 air gems, 200 fatigue.
BTW, Llamabeast mentions me as the source of the gem reduction mod language and spell banning mod language. While I did incorporate those into a "kitchen sink mod" that I invented, I can claim no credit for the language that is contained in those mods.
As far as I know either Dr. P or Endoperez, or both had a hand in that.

There should be a little change to make the MoD fix consistent with changed spell levels :
For my MoD fix mod I had to replace the spells "Phantasmal Warriors" and "Ghost Wolves" by spells named "Summon Phantasmal Warrior" and "Summon Ghost Wolves" (doing exactly the same things) so I could use the originals as chained #nextspells for Mists of Deception (as the #nextspell mod command only work with original spells).
But the other part of kingmaker mod change the level of the original spells, not my remakes.
So "Summon ghost wolves" should get researchlevel 2 and "Summon phantom warrior", researchlevel 1 (research level of "Phantom Warrior" and "Ghost Wolves" original spells are not important as they are no longer researchable)
(I corrected in the attachment, and also added correct descriptions for these spells -I was lazy when making the MoD fix, the descriptions of the remakes just said "as the spell x described in the manual")

I get this error. I have downloaded both the mods from llamabeast and Twan and then enabled them (in different combinations as there seems to be two Standards mods).
There is nothing in the sns3 or llambeasts folders either in my mod folder or the zipped download.... And I have redownloaded both and no change.

Just wait.
Actually the banners are simply missing in the attached folders, llama should give them to Xietor for a repost.
Some are from the sns mod, so if you have it installed, a game with some nations may work.
But some banners have been made by llama and should be in llamabanner folder (actually empty). These ones are missing in the attachment, and any game with nations using them ends in nagots.

Llamabeast is likely done working on mods for the day as he is in England. But while the Pretender deadline is set in stone, the game will not host to turn 2 until everyone is squared away and has the mods working.
So no need to worry. Besides I have the same issue, and I am quite certain it is because the banners are missing! The case of the missing banners. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Can I make a suggestion ?
As it's extremely unlikely that players would risk anyone in a death match against 61 nations to loot the vanilla trident, can this change (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=611653&page=0&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1) be included in the KingMaker mod ?
It would make an eventual death match worth to send real champions, no matter the risk of having to fight 50+ others for the reward.

The game will actually start tomorrow. Had we not waited on the patch, the game could have started on may 15, but we waited, and with it just coming out, it held up our Kingmaker Mod, and final race selections.
We could not start today anyway due to an unavoidable conflict in Llamabeast's real life schedule. So we will start tomorrow.
We have a very short turnaround for the subs, and I have not heard from 2 of them, so I am going to allow Digress to keep MA Ctis despite missing his deadline by a few hours.
So on the subs we have:
Bananadine-EA Abysia
Digress(keeping MA Ctis)
Lingchih-keeping LA Pythium
Aethyr-EA Marvervi
Aezeal -EA Vanheim
Due to the fact that the game is starting tomorrow, with or without the full compliment of players, if I have not heard from the other 2 subs by 6pm cst, then I am letting the next in line in, QM. They need to post on the game thread to keep their spot. I know it is short turnaround for the subs, and I apologize profusely for that(: But the show must go on.
And there is only 1 more spot left since Digress was allowed to remain in the game as MA Ctis. So one of the subs
will not make it in, though i would be surprised if all of the alternates who posted 3 weeks ago could make it in on such short notice.

I need to change the 1st Post. There will be a Kingmaker Mod,
and a few posts back llamabeast attaches it. But it did not contain the banners. So we are awaiting that. Llamabeast should have that up tomorrow.
Map file cannot be given because it reveals the exact starting location for 4 nations, and I am quite sure they do not want the other 60 players knowing where their capital lies.

The problem I faced when June 1 came and went, is that I had no heard from several players, and their pretenders had not been received.

And having not heard from you, or received your pretender, you were replaced(:

everything you need will be in the Kingmaker Mod, which will be posted sometime today(waiting on Llamabeast). You will not need anything else, other than the map file, and worthy heroes 1.8. Those are contained in the 1st post.

If you are a sub for a player, in order to receive the turn, I need your email address and the race you are subbing for.
Indypendent is the sub for sum1lost, but i do not have an email address. And I think there is 1 other sub starting for a player.
Unless the player or sub gives me an email address, llamaserver will mail the turn to the player who submitted the pretender. And if that is not who is doing the turns, a stale will result.

I'm not sure if it's a mod issue or what...but I don't seem to have a start location. I see myself in the pretenders of the world list and I could send messages to people if I wanted to, but I have nothing in my nation overview and no province under my control. Is it possible that MA Tien Chi was not assigned a start location or did I just mess something up with my mods?
Xietor
June 3rd, 2008, 09:54 PM
I have put what i hope is the barebones Kingmaker mod in the 1st post. Llamabeast included a few other mods in with it, and i tried to parcel those out.
All races got a starting province, unless there were more races than starting spots-which should not have occurred.
I just recounted the number of designated starting provinces on the map-61. As long as we had 61 or less races, everyone has a starting province.
It is like 2 am in London, so we need to wait until tomorrow before llamabeast can actually "look" and see what happened to ma tien chi.

while i would not mind a reroll as my starting spot sucks, there is no reason with designated starting spots, for any race to not have a starting spot. We will have to ask llamabeast tomorrow(:

Xietor
June 3rd, 2008, 10:46 PM
I think I found the issue and I am at fault. When editing the map, I designated a province to be a starting location that was a "no start" on the existing map file because it only connected to 1 province. After adjusting the neighbors, it was a good starting location, but I neglected to click off the "no start" designation. So it had both a designation as a starting spot, and a no start designation.
Maybe that is the issue?

What do you mean list? You need the .map file for it to show up, and it has not been released.
Xietor
June 3rd, 2008, 11:05 PM
the rgb file is all you need to play the game. The map file would allow you to start your own games on the Kingmaker map.
That is not being allowed at this time as 4 races have specific starting locations, and everyone would know them if the map file was released. Two races KO said needed specific starting spots, and 2 water races that struggle to get on land were started in the biggest body of water.

Xietor
June 4th, 2008, 01:49 AM
Dr P did the spell mod.
DrPraetorious
June 4th, 2008, 02:04 AM
Construction is not changed by the spell mod, since it messes up the even/odd symmetry if you can't move the items (and you can't). Could've changed the spells anyway, and left the odd-numbered levels empty, but decided not to do so.
I did the *artwork* on the map, and the technical work needed to make it wrap. I acknolwedge that the artwork was not as nice as it might have been - but it's functional. Anyone who wishes to pretty the image file up can do so; people can swap images out mid-game with no problems as long as the white province pixels don't move.
The start assignments were all done by Xietor so blame him for the problems there http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
E/W wrap would've required me to change province #s *if* I had added provinces in the gutter. Since I didn't, I suppose I could've done E/W wrap instead, but N/S was safer.

June 4th, 2008, 04:34 AM
Okay actually I won't be restarting straight away. It turns out the underlying issue on the map is that we are short two start provinces, due to some miscounting (it seems both Xietor and I have a tendency to miscount by 2 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif ). So we need to find two more locations to use as start provinces.
Xietor is presumably asleep at the moment, so I expect we will be restarting tonight, European time.

Also, we had an idea to increase interest in the Arena Death Match. The winner of the death match will receive 1000 gold. I'll include a hidden extra nation (which will be unreachable), which will exist just to pay the reward.
Hope everyone's keen on this idea, I think it will add a cool bit of extra spice.
Xietor
June 4th, 2008, 10:30 AM
The problem, at least with me, is not one of an in ability to count. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
What occurred is I had 3 spots listed as starting spots that were invalid I think. The special start provinces for la atlantis and la marignon also appeared as start provinces that any race could receive. Hence i think the computer tried to assign 2 races to those provinces but la atlantis and la marignon were already there(: This in addition to the 1 province that was originally labeled a "no start' that i forgot to uncheck after fixing its neighbors and making it a designated start.
So in all I do think 3 of the 61 starting spots were screwed up. And 1 fix is very easy, and the other is not as it requires finding 2 new starting locations(:
As to equity. with some people have 7 neighbors and some having 4, that is unavoidable. You are always going to have good and not so good starting spots. Everyone had at least 4 neighbors except la atlantis, who only had 3, but la atlantis has a very good starting spot imho regardless.
With me having to add 2 new spots, i can make no promises about those.
My sincere apologies for the delay.

I think you can update pretenders anytime before the game starts, but the game has actually started now. So you may need to send llamabeast a pm and work something out to change your pretender at this time. I do not think you can just send in a pretender now and expect it to update since as far as llamaserver knows the game has commenced.
Good News. Thanks to the mighty graphics of Ballbarian, I was able to see a yellow dot on the map where a starting capital should have been, but was inadvertently omitted from the map file. So there will only have to be 1 new spot found for a starting capital.

I like the idea of providing a reward llama - but I am opposed to executing it.
The game was formed - and pretenders designed - with certain conditions. Making this change gives an advantage to those who chose awake pretenders.
I would love to participate in such a game, at a later date. However, I think it ill advised in a game that is already set up as the epic confrontation of our time.
Leave it as advertised..

Considering the chances
a) to have a death match before most pretenders awaken (perhaps some before the imprisoned gods... but I doubt monoliths can win anyway)
b) to see someone risk his awake pretender, key of initial expansion, even for 1000gp, against 50+ potential other champions in an early death match
c) to see this succeed and the pretender still usable for anything with his dozens of afflictions
I tend to disagree with these objections.
Now it may be decided that the reward will be lower if DM happen before all pretenders are in play, or before turn x, or something like that.
llamabeast
June 4th, 2008, 02:02 PM
chris - anyone who sends their pretender into the arena is either a fool or very brave. I can't see that it can be very unbalancing, because I can't think of a reasonable way to be sure of winning against 60 other contenders. So I think the added interest it will add to the game will far more than counterbalance the (admittedly not ideal) last-minute-addition factor.
I mean, imagine seeing a 60-duel arena fight!
llamabeast
June 4th, 2008, 02:03 PM

In the interest of complete disclosure(and the map file used will be made public at some point in the game), one additional

For reasons I will not disclose now, a specific race was designated to start at this new location(and no it was not me) but the reasons were explained to the the person playing said race in a pm, with my apologies.

Anyone that has a recyclable pretender - for example a wyrm with no magical paths.
Sure, I wouldn't Deathmatch a wyrm in the first few turns either. But around turn 8-10 - when I've run out of free expansion - sure I would.

Yes, I had a bug linked with the mod :
Create God -> EA
1/ With no mods enabled : OK
2/ With streamers & standards llamaversion enabled : myloadmalloc:can't open ./mods/./llamabanners/ea_ulm_icon.tga
OK since llamabanners file is empty, so far...
3/ With streamers & standards enabled : myloadmalloc:can't open ./mods/./llamabanners/ea_hinnom_icon.tga
The same error occurs if I uninstall llamabanners.dm because the sns.dm file has been modified with such lines as :
#selectnation 45
#flag "./llamaBanners/ma_ashdod_icon.tga"
#end
for Hinnom, Ashod, Garth & Bogarus.
If you have these nagodschtroumpf stuff, I suggest as a fast workaround :
- uninstall llamabanners
- uninstall Streamers & standards & reinstall it, or go in the sns.dm file and remove the corrupted lines.

The game is restarted! Yes! I was beginning to superstitiously think it had somehow become cursed, and could never be started.
Somehow, every one of the pretender files had become corrupted in such a way that Dominions would accept them, but would crash if it tried to start a game with them. Leaving one of them in newlords was even enough to make an attempt at a single player game crash. Utterly bizarre, and I have no idea how it could happen. But anyway, having realised they were at fault I just got them down again from the server and restarted. Hopefully all is well now.
