View Full Version : Where are the downloads?

I think this is the 3rd week I've rushed to the library during my lunch period, and come up empty handed on SEV downloads. Where are all of you modders & shipset creators who usually upload something on a weekly basis?

Spaceempires.net has most of the downloads - in the Shipyards and Download areas.
The Balance Mod is always available at my site.
The Wiki has a few links to mods that are not hosted elsewhere...

SE5 Shipset megapack (http://bt.spaceempires.net/torrents-details.php?id=57&hit=1) (currently 320 MB)
Multimedia pack (http://bt.spaceempires.net/torrents-details.php?id=53&hit=1) (currently 150 MB)
Are you already checking specifically on your favorite mods?

You guys seem to have misinterpreted the question. He's not asking where stuff can be downloaded, he's asking what happened to all the new releases there used to be.
There hasn't been much in the way of new releases lately. What has been released tends to be announced more on spaceempires5.com and spaceempires.net (http://home.spaceempires.net/downloads-new-showday-30.html#newdownloads) more than Shrapnel these days.

One can keep track of new shipsets here (http://home.spaceempires.net/article-topic-8.html).

Kwok , any thought of including any of these new shipsets for Balance Mod ?
Fyron
May 15th, 2008, 08:07 PM
That would not be a good idea. It would distort the purpose of the mod, which is not to add things to the game, but simply to balance the data. It would increase the download size of the mod. It would increase the amount of maintenance work Kwok has to perform, keeping more races up to date. And last but not least, its trivial to adapt shipsets to work as AI empires in the mod, making it not a very compelling thing to do.

Part of the problem is that making new things for SEV is much more difficult. The 3D nature is what does that. With SEIV you didn't need to worry about that so long as you had a presentable 2D image. 3D stuff is a different thing entirely.

The better SE4 shipsets were made from 3D models, though.

Generally through DoGA, which is pretty easy to use.

thanks, Fyron, you got my point. I just like downloading stuff for SEV. I'm not looking for any particular upgrade to a mod, or anything like that. Just for something new or upgraded to play with. I've tried Spaceempires.net also, and nothing new has been on there for a couple of weeks also. Since I can only go online at the public library, it's hard for me to remember all of the sites to visit. I can't save them to favorites here. Oh well, I'll just come back here sometime next week again and cross my fingers.

1.77? Must have been a typo; the latest version is 1.71. If you know of any bugs you want fixed, email Aaron (se5 at malfador dot com; preferably with a savegame attached to reproduce the bug) and he might get around to fixing them http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

This game is pretty much on its way out so there isn't a huge incentive to make new things for it.

That seems to be the opposite from reality. All sorts of activity goes on over on the official boards (http://www.spaceempires5.com).

Take a scrap of paper or a 3x5 card to the library with you, and write the URLs down.
I keep a pencil stub and scrap paper in my wallet, just so I can write something down if I need to.

I'm well aware of that, but in that case, it was mostly DoGA. Plus, you didn't need to worry about how the other side of the ship looked, or if all of the polygons would become a "slideshow mode: on" button. 3D complicates matters.
'course, we all do know that 3D is better anyway. :V

I don't think it was mostly Doga. Sure AT was obsessed with it, but there were a lot of other authors besides him. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I know of people that used Maya, 3dsmax, etc. Hell, even one or two crazy people used AutoCAD! Then of course there were the screen capture shipsets that certainly can't translate to SE5.

I know that seems pretty obvious, but I just haven't done that. I know how to access this and Spaceempires.net. If I need more, I try to find a link or two. There are enough in some people's posts. Thanks for the advice, though.

Funny you should mention that this week - I always recommend the bookmark functions of Google Toolbar (or Yahoo Toolbar http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/Sick.gif) because you can log into that from any computer and get to all your stuff, but this week's update for IE7 kills the Google Toolbar. I've switched to Firefox for now, which works fine.
Then again, the toolbar would have to be installed on the library's computer, which it might not be....
Another solution might be Google Docs (http://docs.google.com), where if you log in to the various Google services (with a gmail address or some such) you can create a doc accessible from anywhere and copy/paste urls into it.

Or you could use Opera@USB (http://www.opera-usb.com/operausben.htm) in combination with something like GoodSync (http://www.goodsync.com/download.html).
+ You can keep your emails and newsfeeds with you in a program - and easier to organise than in the web email software! (Drag and drop, learning filters...)
- Some of the public computers might not allow you to use programs from usb drives, either because they are well-protected, or because the drivers are not up to date (for the oldest computers).
Oh, and SE4 and SE5 both work from USB drives! (you only need to keep with you your serial for SE5)

Or use the portable version of a better supported browser (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable).
There are dozens of online bookmarking services (http://www.google.com/search?q=online%20bookmarking%20services&hl=en) available though, so you probably don't need to go to the extent of a portable browser. They would be accessible from any machine, so long as it does not forbid the creation of cookies (though there are even some that let you make your bookmarks publicly visible).

Flash drives are pretty cheap. Create a text file in notepad and save the URL's there.

Not all public computers have accessible USB ports though. Web servers are universal.

Fortunately, the library I go to does have 2 USB ports right next to the cd-r/w drive where I plop my cd in to get my downloads. I know they work, because for some reason I can't save pdf files, so I had to d/l them onto my flash drive last week. I'll see if I can get something on my flash drive that will let me save bookmarks.
