If not I'll take Pythium if that's still available. Or Bandar if it's already gone.

I lost badly the fifth though, and I somehow survived in all other (even if I might be in a position to win in only one of them).

Well a lot people signed up. Extremely fast as well.
I count 14 players. Cradle is too small for that many, although maybe I am wrong and it can handle that many. So does it mean switching to Glory of the Gods? or making a random map or leaving the player count at 12? 2 maybe 3 sea nations are there enough sea provinces for that many or too many.
Quite a lot to sort out for someone organising their first game.
Good luck getting it sorted secretperson and I am sure you will make the right decisions.

Oh boy, I go to sleep for a few hours and look what happens! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I'd rather not cut people out, if possible. It seems that cradle of dominion will be too small to accommodate us all so we'll have to switch that. It sounds a few have mentioned a random map and one has mentioned Glory of Gods (multiplayer). My only concern about random would be it being fair to all players- but I'll figure it out.
secretperson
May 19th, 2008, 09:34 AM
Okay, we have 16 players and sign-ups are now closed. I believe I got everyone in who asked prior to this post. I think we will be going with Glory of Gods map as I do not have much experience with the map editor as of yet. This should be a pretty decent map for our size as it comes out to be about 17.5 provinces per player.
Let's discuss victory conditions- Standard or do we want something like a # of capitals held for a turn? Or we can go the route of 3/5 of provinces held etc. As this is fairly a large game I'd probably suggest some variation of the latter.
Also, those who are noted as being in the game please take the time to begin making a pretender god for your signed-up nation.
For those who are new to this you will find said option in game tools>create a pretender god. MAKE SURE THAT YOU SELECT MIDDLE AGE and that you PUT A PASSWORD for your pretender god. The PASSWORD IS NECESSARY for the hosting setup we are using.
Once you have your pretender god made I will have the e-mail address you can e-mail the file to shortly.

For those of you in the game this is where you will be e-mailing your pretender files-
http://bannerbreak.com/banners/6/274/121121750055211774.gif
Please do not repost this address in text as there is a reason Ich has gone to lengths to use this image rather than have me just type it.
You will find your pretender file in your dominions directory>savedgames>newlords>
It will be named something like mid_ctis_.02h.
Try to get your pretenders e-mailed to Ich as soon as you can. We will be ready to start once everyone has e-mailed them in and we decide finally upon victory conditions.

The one that we're doing now, the victory conditions are holding 7 of the 15 capitals. So if it was something like 6 of 16 capitals, there would be that aspect of racing against everyone else as well as beating them, which might be very interesting!
Xanatos
May 19th, 2008, 10:43 PM
bleh.. victory conditions should be complete and utter world domination:)
Renojustin
May 19th, 2008, 11:00 PM
Well... I hear the reason everyone sets conditions like that that is because otherwise it gets tedious and ridiculous by the end. And taking 6 or 7 capitals is a pretty dominant position, I think, even out of 16.

World domination is pretty much the name of the game. >.>
But it can become a bit tedious when you are obviously dominant, but are forced to go through the motions of squeezing every last breath from every single person who has wronged you in the past. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

huh? It is a valid e-mail address. Double check to make sure you are spelling it right. Just in case: the first word is glory. The second word is karsten. The third is name. If you are referring to the name part as being a little odd, I thought so too in my first game, but it works nonetheless http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Thanks for the pointer. I am actually currently learning this in a game I am playing at the moment where I am fighting ermor. I switched from sacred spiders to normal spiders. Not as tough but at least I don't have to fight my own men.
Oh and by the way with no rider they have MR of 5, even more ouch. Although to be honest his nether darts backed up be skele spam is hurting a lot more.

Pretender sent, I guess we're about ready to get this one on the road!
Concerned about having to get 9 out of 15 capitals... yikes. Want to just go with 7 like we did with Ascendant?
Are we going with a random map or Glory of the Gods? Never played on that one... does it have smoothed out starting locations so everyone has 5 provinces next to their capitals or something?
I think I'd just prefer a random map with victory markers NOT SHOWN. It kinds of spoils the early game it seems when you know where all the capitals are and everyone starts rushing exactly toward everyone else. And a random map has an equal chance of screwing you as helping you, that's perfectly fair.

I don't know what "Monday" means for Cadel regarding time zones, but I will reset the timer once, now, and send him a PM and email to remind him to play his turn, as it didn't sound like "I quit" to me the first time he wrote. If he doesn't want to play, we're in a predictament, I'll try to get a sub then. I do not want AI nations from the start in games that I am hosting.

The worst that would happen is that we restart? (I'm not terribly fond of my starting location anyways. >.>)
Is this fairly common for MP games? Not griping, just curious if I should expect starting delays, or delays in general to be fairly frequent.
lch

It is quite common that it takes a while in the start until all the things are in place and everybody knows what to do. But after the initial difficulties are overcome, the game usually picks up speed from there on.

Look, no offense, but I'm getting tired of waiting on this game. I offered host; I'm still willing to host. I don't know how people get the ip address to resolve to a name - but I am willing to setup a server and distribute the ip address.
I'll wait a few hours... but if I get into another game I'll probably just drop.

I'm not offended, and it certainly is very unfortunate that now that we finally started the game is down again. I don't make demands about hosting this game, it's just as a service for secretperson who can't do so himself. If the players are cool with it, then feel free to host the game yourself instead. I think that would be best for the game at this time.
I can't give you the game files, though, as all the backups are on the server which now has gone unavailable. As far as I understood Gandalf, no data is lost, but it's unavailable at the moment. What I could do is give you the pretender files and the email addresses of the players and then you start the game anew from scratch. Since we just started, I don't think it's too much of a problem - or did somebody get some awesome hero that he is going to miss if we restart?

Bah! Isn't he the disease spreading immortal one? I just can't find a use for him although he does have 2 death which TC lack otherwise. But really after a bit of site searching in empty provinces what can he be used for? Too weak to be much of a thug even with his magic. The IANA lists that port as "Reserved":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_TCP_and_UDP_port_numbers#Registered_Ports: _1024.E2.80.9349151
But of course MicroSoft seems to be abusing it for various services: http://www.grc.com/port_1024.htm
It might be that ISP's are blocking connections to that port on purpose to hold back worms which are trying to infect other systems.

Haven't had chance to go through any problem solving techniques yet. And will struggle to find time to do that before Sunday now. Sadly :-(
Will certainly look into creating a virtual PC environment like you suggest when I do though.
I've already submitted my first turn for Glory2 using Dom 3.15. Will that be accepted or not? (I'm guessing not if the server was created with 3.17) And will I be able to submit future turns using Dom 3.15?
If the answer is no to both questions, then it might be best to find a sub for me, since I have no idea how long my 3.17 problems will take to fix, although it will likely be Sunday by the earliest, and that's only if everything goes well.
I don't want to ask for any delays either since this game has easily had enough of those already.

Hey Ich...
Any tips anyone wants to give me that makes this smoother, I am happy to try out.
I am using a static ip with a firewall with pass thru forwarding on port 1024 to the machine hosting. The machine, the router, the switch are all on a UPS.
I've checked for dropped packets coming via dslreports and came up clean....
lch
May 29th, 2008, 06:04 PM
Okay, firewall would explain why the ping is discarded. Although that's a pretty overzealous thing to do for a firewall, take away the easiest and most obvious way to detect if a system is alive and reachable on the net. Some services might even depend on it by sending a ping first before they do more stuff on the net. Dunno if Dom3 is among those.
I have uploaded my server check script here: http://valhalla.srhost.info/socket.php
It will first connect to Velusion's Fallacy game (so that you can see that the script is indeed working) and then to your server.
You can check if your port 1024 is reachable outside here:
http://www.canyouseeme.org/
http://www.port-scan.de/lynx/select.php
Just enter your port number 1024 in those and submit. Don't mind the German on the second one, you just have to look at the reply. If it doesn't say "open" (which they will display in red, because they check if a firewall works, not a service), then others can't connect to your game.
I know that other people have hosted games behind hardware / software routers, so you could use the search function here.

What a great script ich. I'm still working; when I get home I'll check all of these things.. probably around 2 hours from now.
Your script really gives me an idea, as I have a webserver sitting around doing nothing.. I wonder if I could host on that and then have the webserver publishing the script results continuously........
Sounds like a screwdriver night...
Hmm: Ok. I have no clue now.
Success: I can see your service on 74.236.0.134 on port (1024) Your ISP is not blocking port 1024
But the german one reports: Green, which looks like service closed.
Finally, your script works fine as well Ich. It reports 6/15 players ready.
Ok: Interestingly, the westel 6100 modem configured to be always on is resetting (PADT disconnect) for hours at a time. According to a DSL reports, this could be a defective modem or a misconfiguration by bellsouth.
Could people try connecting now? Ive reset the modem. IF it doesn't work, I'll setup a ping keep alive to keep traffic up (and hence prevent usage disconnects)....

The script is to be considered very experimental. I haven't found out how to tell PHP effectively to use timeouts on socket streams. If there is no problem, it works beautifully, but if there is a problem then the script tends to hang up and freeze itself, which seems to vary from host to host, I really have no idea what causes that.
I have made another, earlier, script which you can install on your game server to show stats for games, check the "PHP status script for Dom3 game servers" in my sig. It inspects the savegame files to report on the game status. The two other scripts that I have been running, to display graphical scores, have gone down with the server, I don't think that I have local copies of those. They'd need an SQL database to work, anyway.

Depends on your operating system. Linux easily comes with both. Web servers can be installed under Windows with one of the WAMP projects available. Email would be another thing.
chrispedersen said:

I did both for my games. Backing up game files was more or less done like this (which I used on local games before):
<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>function archive {
if test $# -lt 1; then return; fi
tar czvf $(basename $1)-$(date +%s).tgz $@
}</pre><hr />
For email, I used something called nbsmtp because I didn't trust local sendmail installations, which would have been even easier to use.
P.S.: For Windows, try one of these links:

Dom3 patches are parasitic. Some game will update to the new patch. Its players will have to update to the new patch to continue playing, too. Unless they install the game twice on their computers, then the servers of any other games that they play in will have to update to the new patch, too. Branching off from the current patch level is hard to do. That's probably the whole idea to make sure everybody's updated.

The PHP scripts which I released don't use sockets to get the game stats, they only work on the local file system, thus you will need a webserver on the same host where the game is for them to work. The socket code which grabs the game stats over the network is highly experimental, tends to fail in lots of ways and thus wasn't released to the public.

Ye Olde Shoppe Of All Things Delectable And Arcane is now opening, in a Glory of the Gods map near you!
We are offering**, for those of you unable to forge such wonders on your own (you poor uncivilized beggars, we take pity on you!), a great many treasures, including, but not strictly limited to:
Frost Brand (5W)
Fire Brand (5E/5F)
Dwarven Hammer (*See Below)
Sceptre of Authority (5F)
Black Bow of Botulf (Inquire Within)
Lead Shield (10E)
Charcoal Shield (*See Below)
Black Steel Helmet (5E)
Dragon Helm (5F)
Black Steel Full Plate (10E)
Elemental Armor (10E 5F)
Boots of the Behemoth (*See Below)
Earth Boots (*See Below)
Burning Pearl (5F)
Bracers of Protection (5E)
Girdle of Might (5E)
Ring of Fire (5F)
Ring of Frost (5W)
*Not all items will be available to all nations. Furthermore, while most items are available for base forging price to all who might need them, certain special items may require special terms - kneepads sold separately. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif
**Initial orders are somewhat limited due to availability of forgers. Also, initial demand may be high, so orders will be filled in the order that they are received***. Until the supply and demand paradigm works itself out, please drop a mail to this address with the contents of your order. Orders will be filled fastest if gems are sent promptly.
***Tips/bribes will be accepted to bump one's order ahead of other basic orders. A wise negotiator may pay for results, but will get what they want, when they want it.
~~ Operators are standing by! ~~

Currently, Ye Olde Shoppe has a limited ability to perform trades for non-required gems. As of right now, that only leaves the possibility of substituting for E gems, which we have an adequate supply of. Unfortunately, we don't have much actual use for A as of this time, so you may need to look towards trading with others first, to get the needed materials.

I will trade fire gems on an equal gold basis hunt. Currently, I am still burning them for gold, so thats the best offer I can make.

i hear the music, its almost here. ah, a fine silver eagle flys into the halls of abysia. "this is your last chance to pay tribute. or prepare to be silenced". http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gifLL

the thing is Bwaha is that i know I have lost and that even if i gave tribute it would only delay the inevitable so I unless something big happens I am right now aiming for a glorious defeat.

really, things don't look too bad, i'm glad that you are willing to fight. i would say good luck, but that would be bad for me. all the clamor for tribute is jus a bit of color. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif LL

On other matters:
I am in Chicago from Friday till Sunday.
I am not expecting to delay the game. My positions in all games will be capably handled by Mark Montero.
I am going to down the servers Thursday night at midnight, to give them a fresh reboot, and to install some remote management software.
That way if something happens while I'm away, there will be at least the possibility of resolving the problem remotely.
Best to all
Chris

Is Pan still playing at the moment? While I have no problem with someone taking time to play their turns if he is staling then we should switch him to AI.
fungalreason
June 16th, 2008, 08:43 PM
I'm pretty sure he staled the last 2
chrispedersen
June 16th, 2008, 10:57 PM
Pan staled 20. He has not submitted a turn for 21.
I will not AI unless he stales 2; even so I will send him a message here inquiring.
For the rest: if you intend to abandon a position do please notify.

having been in negotations with him fairly constantly, im fairly sure he quit, which definitely throws off the otherwise great game I was having =/ im tryin to talk him into comin back, PM sent...no response yet.
Bwaha
June 17th, 2008, 01:44 AM
i ask in future games, if you're going to quit say so. it gives all of us a better game if we know what the status of your country is. if i quit i will state so. please extend the same politeness and consideration to others. this is about having fun. we are waiting for the turn to move on. if you aren't going to do your turn please notify the webmaster or whatever. if you don't the turns go so slowly it isn't fun. so in closing if you want to quit do so with as much warning as possible. its only polite. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Bwaha

Honestly, it seems to me it would be hard to find someone willing to sub, given his current position.
johnarryn
June 17th, 2008, 05:34 PM
Perhaps. Until Pangaea made an enemy of every single one of his neighbors he was doing quite well.
chrispedersen
June 17th, 2008, 06:16 PM
I don't mind tyrant subbing, if you think he will. I have searched for a replacement without any luck. I promised a 24 hour delay.
I am going to set the game to host at 11pm EST. If he indicates he will host by 10pm, I will give him a couple of extra hours to familiarize and send in a turn.
Otherwise, I'm going to set it to AI.
In the future; As I got no real takers on subbing, I am going to set all to AI without searching for subs.
Best

Servers are back up. Power was down.
Tyrant has agreed to take on Pangaiea. As this was arranged by request of Bwaha, I did not actually think to ask if he wanted Atlantis.
Due to Tyrant taking the position, hosting will be delayed 24 hours.

Sorry John:
I got my boards crossed. Atlantis in a different game had asked me to find a sub. I didn't think to ask Tyrant. And posted to the wrong board.
Apologies.

That's the one for this game. The other is for the BraveNewWorld game.
Also, the service is provided by Matryx for the SA Dom3 goons, I only registered chris' games on there. I'd still think that it would be best if chris gets his own webserver up soon, tho.

Thank you Matrix!
As Ich did it for me, I didn't know; So thanks again. Its a great looking page and a lot of work has gone into it.
At some point Ich, I am going to get that webserver up - however I have a lot to learn still - I doubt it will ever look as good as Matryx's page.
However, I just got back (4am) and work is slamming me so it will be a while....
Thanks again Matryx!
