To join

- Go to Game Tools -> Create a pretender god in Dominions. Don't set a password, since for PBEM games they're not helpful and occasionally annoying (e.g. if you need a sub)
- Go to the savedgames/newlords folder in the dominions directory, and find your pretender file (e.g. mid_pythium_0.2h)
- E-mail the file to: pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net
- Crucially, you must have Victoria in the subject line of your e-mail

However, small question before sending my Pretender — what game version do you run (3.17 or 3.15) and whether you require any mods?

We'll be running 3.17 from the start. We'll be using only a single mod from Twan that modifies Mist of Deceptions to not break the game. You can get it below. There's also an attachment to the original post that has the map files in it you'll need to play the game.

We need one more person to give us 15. Fanfiction bowed out even after submitting a pretender (annoying). I'm going to switch Twan over to Utgard if he likes. That means that Atlantis should be free.

Twan
June 3rd, 2008, 05:00 AM
So I switch back to Utgard.

re-edit :

Abysia being free I think there is no problem for you to take it (except llama perhaps need to be called to remove Atlantis from the game) .

Jazzepi
June 3rd, 2008, 01:33 PM
I contacted Llamabeast to remove the old Utgard, and Atlantis. Twan will probably have to reupload after that.

Digress, Abysia is definitely free. I'll add you in for that slot.

P.S. Rlyeh will benefit from this greatly, as they can capture my home province without resistance.

alhorro
June 10th, 2008, 08:35 AM
2Deonmag:

Although I don't understand how had you managed to miss 3 turns (I just looked at my mail, all the turns were done before the time-out), I think you should wait with switching to AI.

3 turns in the beginning are not deadly at all, actually, your losses're equal to 1 random bad event (btw, I've already had one in that game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif ). And as for R'lyeh — it's very risky to siege someone's capital at the first turns.

So, maybe others have some small edge atm, but everything may change, cause diplomacy is allowed in this game.

WraithLord
June 10th, 2008, 08:56 AM
Deonmag, don't despair - as alhorro said, the game has just started and over time you may make up for the lost turns and more.

Deonmag
June 11th, 2008, 05:09 AM
Point is that I don't have Internet at home, so on weekend I was planing to visit my friend and check mail from him. But when I heard of 60 hour delay I just relaxed and invited that friend to play on my home local net... so I was anaware of going turns. That it.

Hadrian_II
June 11th, 2008, 01:01 PM
Ulm is stomped, my start was way to close to rlyeh, and i took a bit of a gambit build, so im missing early game firepower.

I set myself to AI, and hope that everyone has a good game.

alhorro
June 15th, 2008, 12:57 PM
It was surprising.
Taking a look at HoF kills column we can assume that it was Utgard who'd gifted the Final Death to poor Ermorians. Am I right? (:

Twan
June 15th, 2008, 03:54 PM
Yes. Ermor was rather unlucky to start in my backyard, considering local geography and his dominion stronger than mine I had no reasonable choice except rushing him.

Twan
June 16th, 2008, 10:21 AM
Cool to have ermorian capitol, but less cool to have half my provinces under 1k pop.

So I invite anyone interested to bid here in gold for 25 death gems.

Minimal price is 350g. I'll take the best offer posted here before tomorrow (tuesday) at 15h GMT (effective trade will take place next turn).

WraithLord

Twan
June 17th, 2008, 01:08 PM
Yes.

@Jazzepi Giant lawyers say : Biding was stated to be "in gold" not in chads or copper pieces. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

More seriously, a last minute +1 when WL which seemed motivated and made several serious offers was probably not online was rather evil. I would have accepted it only to respect the word of my rules, when I forgot to give a minimum increment. But with the .5 to give me an excuse to ignore the offer, I prefer to do so...

WraithLord
June 17th, 2008, 01:16 PM
That's true. I was indeed offline. I've considered "setting" an auto agent that will increment the bid for me until a limit of 500g. But then I was sure someone would just abuse it and pull the bid up anyway so I haven't. In any case I think its a good trade, 25g per gem is what you get as an alchemist for fire gems.

Sorry to hear that Jazzepi

However my first reaction is - what? - the all mighty Gath gone??? - Sorry, I'm referring to some early comments on the latest patch that the new nations are ubber powered. Perhaps Gath is indeed powerful but not enough to defeat two nations, at least not in this case.

With LA Ermor or R'lyeh it may sometimes take more nations to bring down, so at least new nations are not off the power scale.

Jazzepi
July 10th, 2008, 05:18 PM
I was about to finish up Crushing Jomon, I just had an extremely good victory against their main forces, and then Bogarus joined the fight D:

I couldn't take both of them at the same time. In retrospect I should have gone for some supply items. I didn't realize quite how bad the supply issue would be!

The Gath giants are nice, I was using an E9 N6 blessing, but the Utagard giants are better. Even though you can't field as many of them, the cold aura is a ridiculous beating.

You'll soon can add Utgard to the badly beaten by TC list.

TC is very advanced in research for a game in turn 40, and already using summons more than regular troops (and things like golems).

LOL, Strange weather disturbances in Patala coming from its west (TC) can only mean that one (or more) of the Air Queens has been summoned.

WOW, 1 vs 4(or even more?). Is TC that strong and horrible??? Alright, it's not my first time facing such kind of situations. But this happened at turn 40, which is too early...Not sure how far TC can go, but I promise to produce enough troubles for each of my enemies http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Patala fight TC for the overlord position of the world, which is easy to understand...But I was confused why Mari & Mict followed him?

"We attack you because you may attack us in the future." -- that's the "reason" Patala presented. But has anyone considered that once TC fall, Mari/Mict will certainly be attacked by Patala? Your "reason" is...excuse me...ridiculous. Especially for Mictlan, you even don't have access to my lands, what can you get from fighting us? I could pay double price if you are fighting for money/gems.

My neighbours, the world is in great war, and it's a chance to extend your own power. Choose your enemy wisely and please...fight for your own sake!

Great manner of both asking and answering asked questions within one sentence. If you were not able to pay double price and produce enough troubles for everyone, nobody attacked you, especially Mictlan — we are such a peaceful nation that we don't even have weapons.

I thought Marignon was busy fighting Ctis, go figure...

It goes to show that each player has a mind of his own and probably the intel on TC scared them, enough at least to cause them to want to stop TC early. I'm not arguing the point whether they should or shouldn't attack TC. Everyone makes his own plans, if four nations were banding on me I would sure as hell feel bad about it, but every once in a while it happens, usually when I am strong enough to justify an alliance against me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Oh but I can say one thing though, a nation that on turn 40 has so much money, so many gems, extremely advanced research, all kinds of SCs and huge mage backed armies that is easily eating other strong nations is IMHO begging to be ganged upon. For me personally this was the reason to break NAP with TC, it was plain old fear of the OMG huge, light years advanced nation to my west.

EDIT, wow didn't know there's an automatic censoring bot on posts. rephrased in more consensus terminology.

The map is unbalanced due to the terrain. Some nations can build cheap forts only in mountains, and there are no mountains at all on this map. Therefore nations, which can build cheap forest/swamp/etc forts have an advantage.

Since something like this hasn't happened before, I can only guess that I must have messed something up while I was working on the server (which I've been doing a lot lately, but have now very nearly finished doing). The markets of Patala are open for trade. Patala is interested in earth or death gems. In return it can give equal amount of astral or fire gems, or even forge up to lvl 6 items of equivalent cost.

Also to the players on the westerns side of the map I'm afraid I have some unpleasant news. The three nations set about to stop TC (Patala, Mictlan and Marignon) have not met their objective, not even close. What happens is that TC is breaking the resistance and is on the attack. Updates to follow.
So, unless we manage to stop it you may end up with a nation that controls territories belonging previously to six different nations. Consequences should be clear.

This is also a good point to take off the hat at the great show MX is putting on. Shrewd and cunning, he is slowly but surely crushing the opposition. Way to go friend :)

Broadcast to all nations of the world.

There are no score graphs so those of you with less than perfect intelligence may miss the recent developments.

TC is beating us, us as in the three nations set to stop him after he devoured Abysia and Utgard. We will not last long against him, exhausted of our resources and beaten badly with every new turn. TC already controls close to third of the map and closing on half if current state of affairs continues. He is way in end game in terms of SCs, spells, resources etc.

Now, MX you have played marvelously and if you manage to pull this through you deserve the victory. However it is my obligation to give a fair warning to all the nations of the world. Either you stop whatever you are doing now and do your best to counter TC or you face a 100% probability of losing the game! Listen or forsake the game. Make your choice and make it fast.

Jomon hears your warning. Unfortunately, we have no choice but to fight R'lyeh. This nation has captured many provinces from Gath after the Jomon-Bogarus alliance eventually defeated Gath, there is no way we can accept this. More important right now is the fact that R'lyeh has a very agressive Dominion spreading in our provinces and causing a lot of trouble and affliction. We cannot stand such a vicinity. We can consider stopping the war against R'lyeh if this nation destroys enough temples to keep his dominion in a reasonnable fashion and if it gives back the provinces stolen from former Gath. This is the only viable option for me.

WraithLord
September 13th, 2008, 03:55 PM
Sounds like a reasonable compromise given the alternative. I wholeheartedly suggest you work out your differences and do what you know has to be done.

The western nations (or the "bloody axis" as we were called :) ) will not last very long. Then I'd be really really surprised if any combination of powers could stop TC. Besides having vast resources, research and tons of SCs, MX is a real cunning player, so I'd put all my money on him :D

I would say that Bogarus is lying outright. But that would be impolitic of me...in honesty, when Gath left the game I told Bogarus via ingame messaging that I would claim his capitol and another province (the one that connects my ocean to the sea above me) and that he could claim the rest if he wanted...he agreed to this. I have not aggressed on him or jomon until they began attacking me...however..I own 4 capitals now, including my own, and would glady devote my services to destroying the superpower if I am still needed..

Sorry to say I've not been on the forums lately, I've been playing via ingame messaging, due to time constraints in RL - if anyone wants me however please email me at Xanatos (at) Triad (dot) rr (dot) come and let me know what you need me to do...I am afraid my options are limited while I am fighting both jomon and Bogarus...unless they agree to back off.

Herode
September 19th, 2008, 05:18 AM
Xanatos, Bogarus is not lying because I am Jomon ;)

Moreover, Bogarus does not have the ability to grant you ownership for any Gath's former provinces since Bogarus has an alliance with me, Jomon, to
1 - defeat Gath and to share his provinces
2 - once done with Gath, to attack you.

If you had some trade with Bogarus I had not been aware of, you shall clarify your mutual positions but Jomon won't pay for these occult trades between Bogarus & R'lyeh.

As for Jomon, the situation is quite simple : the war against Gath has been costly and hard. I had to defend, then regain my provinces with heavy losses. In the process, my net benefit is 4 provinces... R'lyeh easily occupied 10+ undefended provinces while we were sieging the last forces from Gath.

Obviously, Jomon can't accept this. Neither can I accept your dominion spreading deeply in my provinces as it is presently doing. I just can repeat my former assertion : peace is possible if you withdraw in your sea and destroy enough temples to keep your dominion pression reasonable. Otherwise, Jomon has no other choice but war.

MX
September 19th, 2008, 07:53 AM

Well Patala has lost so much in this war, its resources, SCs, armies. Now its losing provinces, one of its castles is about to be taken. More armies are heading towards other castles. Tartarian SCs are being produced and used to take its provinces.

Patala would consider itself lucky if the world survives TC and Patala happens to make it out alive as well.

100+ provinces is a fantasy that seems completely unrealistic. If Patala ever comes to that feel free to band together and hack the hell out of it :D

Seem like this turn crashed. Quote:
"
Hi. On trying to host Victoria just now, Dominions crashed. This is not a LlamaServer issue, but rather Dominions itself crashed with a "Nagot gick fel" error.

These errors are normally caused by a (generally inexplicable) problem with one of the players' 2h files. Therefore the LlamaServer moved all your 2h files away before hosting again. This is why you will receive a new turn file in which you've staled.

There are two options from here. Either you can treat the stale turn as a random event and carry on with the game, or you can roll back the turn and try to host again. If you try the latter your game admin will have to do the rollback via the admin options on the LlamaServer website, and you will all have to do your turns again. Note that in this case it is _really important_ that you actually do redo your turn, rather than just sending in the same one again (which people sometimes seem to do because they don't believe me). If you just send in the same file, hosting will simply fail again.

I hope you manage to get the game back on course, whichever option you go for.
"

So what now?- I prefer the option of rollback. Maybe with small changes to turn files the turn will host correctly.

FYI, I've emailed llamabeast with following Qs. I'll update as to response.
"
so what I'd like to know is:
1. Is it possible to discern the offending 2h file?
2. Is it possible to run hosting in debug mod or some such and learn why the turn crashed (meaning for example, whether a certain battle or ritual or move order caused the crash)
3. If we rollback and everyone give same orders won't the hosting crash again?
4. If we rollback and everyone modify their turn, won't that achieve the same effect towards eliminating the crash as replaying the turn from scratch?
5. If we choose not to rollback, give more or less same orders as in previous turn and hosting crashes again. Then what?- Do we need to forsake the game or is there any way to workaround or fix the crash?
"

Jazzepi, It would seem that we would need to rollback this turn and pray it doesn't crash again.

Having spent about three hours on last turn I don't plan to redo it from scratch for two reasons: first, even if I do it from scratch it will be very similar to what I did since I'm quite pedantic when doing my turns and usually keep a ToDo list in my head for most of the actions I want done and Second, I don't know what's the reason for the crash - it might be R'lyeh auto summon or some battle or some ritual that bombed the turn so w/o knowing the reason we could get a crash even if we redo turns and rehost.

I suggest to rehost with the old .2h files. Maybe we'd get lucky and turn will host.
Ideally llamabeast could provide us with a way to get a debug log of the hosting, this will hopefully tell us why the host crashed.

Okay, I'm just working finally on answering Wraithlord's questions. I'd normally be a little disinclined to, as it's a fairly long job, but if his turn took 3 hours(!), well, then I'm happy to make a bit of an effort.

Right, here's the error:
Ngot gick fel!
mapmove: bad unr
Ngot gick fel!
mapmove: bad unr
Aborted

And... having tried by a process of elimination, it's Tien Ch'i's 2h file that breaks the hosting. Only he will need to resubmit.

I'll submit the files to Johan. Repeatable crashes are a valuable commodity. And thankfully a rare one too.

llamabeast
October 7th, 2008, 09:26 AM
So, to be clear, what you need to do is:

- Roll back to last turn
- Have T'ien Ch'i send in his turn. No-one else needs to.
- Force hosting, even though most players will be on "Waiting for 2h file". The server has the files and will use them, so it'll be fine.

T'ien Ch'i should redo his turn from scratch to minimise the chances of a repeat.

On a lighter note. I knew it was evil TC who crashed the turn ;) It happens b/c he has too many SCs, lands and income. I have a solution for TC, give me some of your lands, that will make your turns crash free :D

Seriously now, MX, I'm sorry you'll have to do redo your turn. Its a real bummer and I hope this is a single case episode.

It's a critical time...and TC planed to throw a lot of ritual spells into Patala capital...may that cause the problem? I mean, is there any limit like you can't cast more than x spells at one province?

I'll reduce the amount of missiles...lucky you WL...

MX has been banned.

We owe thanks to WraithLord who raised concerns about MX's extraordinary success in the game. To WraithLord's credit he did so with considerable trepidation and did not wish to make allegations, but just to reassure himself that all was well. I took a look at some of MX's turn files, and found that he had been cheating.

I won't say exactly how he'd been cheating, because that would be stupid, but suffice to say that his 2h files had been tampered with, and much of his success in this game (and probably in his other game, Fools) was a result of that tampering. I sent the files straight away to JK who confirmed that the files had been tampered with. He's already made a fix, so that from the next patch such cheating will no longer be possible.

Unlike Norfleet, the infamous cheater of Dom2, MX seems to have been very subtle, and it took me a while to find things which were definitely wrong, rather than just impressive for the turn number. We were lucky to catch him.

Although I've banned MX (with lch's and JK's approval), I will send him an e-mail to see if he has anything to say for himself. That seems only fair.

I'm sorry that your game will have been really rather fouled up by all this. Anyway, in a moment I will roll the game back to last turn, and replace MX's turn with an order to set T'ien Ch'i to AI. Then I'll force hosting and you can resume the game. Incidentally it could well have been some error in MX's tampering which caused the crash on last turn. I don't know.

As I told llama so I tell you my friends to this game and all dominions players who may be reading this.

I am SHOCKED and greatly saddened :(

I had my doubts all game long but I didn't, couldn't, bring myself to think badly on a fellow player. Even when TC success seemed impossible, research impossibly fast, resources impossibly high I kept telling myself, maybe he got lucky, maybe he has the greatest sites possible but most importantly, why would he want to cheat anyway, its pointless since we are playing for fun, not to win any prize or money. The trust I have in fellow players is embedded really strongly in me and not for nothing, I guess I was fortunate enough to always play with honest and friendly players.

I'm sorry for Abysia, Jotun and Marignon who have died in vain against impossible odds. Hey, I was very close to joining their fate.

Though this whole episode pains me I'm proud and not ashamed of having done this service to the community.

I'm grateful to llama for checking just to rest my mind at ease.

Thank you llama!!! you're my hero.
Thank you JK for confirming this and making the fix.

Agreed. I simply cannot understand this. What's the interest of winning if you cheat ???? This is just, well, I don't know... immature ?

Anyway, congrats to you & llama for the investigation.

Not really a surprise for me. I hesitated to post something about MX norfleetish amount of gems and research level when we were at war, but didn't wanted to launch a false accusation, like WL said he could just have been very lucky with sites etc...

I continued to follow this thread just to see if my impression was right. Unfortunately it was.

WraithLord
October 9th, 2008, 06:34 PM
I had good intel on TC from very early on and got suspicious by seeing the composition of his armies, the spells he had available from early on. I kept telling myself its not fair to think like that and that he may have had great luck, income etc. However as the game progressed the inconsistency between what a nation that controls that many provinces at that stage of the game could output vs. what TC had going became staggering (to my judgment of course).

I would have said nothing anyway and let MX win just so as not to make a false accusation. However the crashed host, combined with the fact that TC turn had caused that crash due to illegal move or something caused all the alarm bells in my head to start ringing, the rest was handled by the capable hands of llama and JK.

I'm sorry this wasn't discovered earlier or I'm sure his war against you would have ended differently (remember, I came to your help, but against his hordes you stood no chance).

There's good end to that story as JK will tighten security in next patch :)

As for the sub, the only way to know is to try. The other option is to set R'lyeh to AI. This will be the second AI in the game, and the 2 AI have very strong positions. Can be interesting also. Anyway, the game balance is messed after TC cheats, then I don't really care to have a standard game now. I'm just playing the last Victoria stages as test runs for my first Jomon build.

It seems like the previous turn has hosted. However I've sent two turns to the server. First one was a half done turn (sent on the 29/10) and a second one (sent on the 30/10) complete with my orders.

Unfortunately the server has hosted with my half done turn causing me a catastrophic turn :(

I will go ahead and ask Llama for rehosting with my second turn file. I will not send a new turn file of course, I'll just ask for rehosting with my updated file what should have happened anyway if not for the server crashing.

WraithLord

ok, I've reported this at the thread about llamaserver down.
A way to fix the issue was presented there - to rollback to previous turn.

From Llamaserver's description of rollback:

Quote:
"
This will cause the game to return to the previous turn.

Note that I generally recommend not doing this. The main reason for this is the fact that players have already seen the current turn, and so they know what would happen given the set of moves they used last time. Hence, consciously or not, they are very likely to use this information to change their actions next time they submit a turn. Even assuming none of the players' actions are affected, there will always be a suspicion in the mind of the other players if battles turn out significantly differently. Therefore just in the interest of having the game feel completely fair, I think rollbacks are a bad idea.

Having said that, there are situations where rollbacks are called for, which is why I've included the option here.

Read this next bit carefully. I seem to be having difficulties explaining it coherently:

Note that once the game is rolled back, it will appear that the game is waiting for 2h files from all players. However, the 2h files from last time the turn was played will in fact be there, and will be used if the game hosts without them being overwritten. This can be useful; often, a game is rehosted in order for only one or two players to retake their turns, while everyone else is expected to make no changes. The game admin can therefore wait till just those players have submitted, and then force hosting. None of the other players will stale (assuming they actually submitted a 2h file last time the turn was played).
"

So I would like to go ahead an rollback to previous turns. Those players who have had their turn files sent correctly this time should take no action. Although the server will report its waiting for their .2h files, the original files they sent are saved in the server and will be used.
Those players who had issues or errors with the turns they sent due to the server problems should resubmit the turn.

I would like to here your opinions before I rollback.

Bwaha

I didn't send any orders last turn since the llamaserver was broken. I thought we will receive some wrning before the hosting... I am therefore a strong supporter of the rollback option.

We will have to wait for the server to be fixed. Currently the rollback option is not working. I've tried it for like three times but it doesn't do anything.

WraithLord
November 7th, 2008, 04:20 AM
It seems like the server cached my request for rollback, didn't show any sign its rolling back and then all of a sudden rolled three turns back.
I'm really sorry for this :(

I will PM llama and ask if its possible to set game back to turn 64. Please do not delete the "Victoria: Rolled back to turn 64" emails you got as you would need those turns in case the server is set back to turn 64.

I will keep you posted and hope this unfortunate affair is resolved quickly.

WraithLord
November 7th, 2008, 02:18 PM
Still no ansewr from llama.

According to the server's documentaion I could just force host back to 64, since the original 2h files are saved on the server. Ain't got nothing to lose since at worst we roll back to 62.

Bwaha
November 7th, 2008, 02:42 PM
So should we submit turn 64?

WraithLord
November 7th, 2008, 04:24 PM
Frankly I'm not sure this will work. However, llama did say he is very busy ATM and I'm sure he has had enough on his plate what with the server down and all this.

My rational is that if indeed that server keeps the .2h file then if I were to force host turn 62 the hosing will work ok. Meaning no one will need to resubmit and no one will stale.
I'm not sure this will work for turn 63. This is b/c the second hosting of turn 62 will, even though using same orders, inevitably have different results than the first hosting (due to random events, close battles ending differently etc). This in turn may cause force hosting of turn 63 to yield unexpected and probably undesired effects.

In any case submitting turn 64 now will not work. The server will probably reject your file.

I'll try to amend this one step at a time. First host to turn 63. Then I'll check with you if files were generated ok (no stales or such).
Then force host to 64. This step is more likely to fail in my opinion but anyway its one turn better than 62.

Zeldor
November 7th, 2008, 04:44 PM
I am not in that game, but I wouldn't recommend it. Turn 63 results will be certainly different [at least random events] and it will mess unit IDs, so if someone submits old turn 63 it can mess things up [really mess it up, like people getting some new commanders, some batles that shouldn't happen, mess with province ownership]. So if you do it be aware that you everyone will have to do turn 63 again.
