View Full Version : Map Sombre's Maps (Including NI)

Howdy. I have recently been looking through some old Dom2 maps and many of them are very nice and around the size I like to play on - either side of 100 or so provinces. As many people have pointed out, map editing has changed relatively little and therefore most of these maps will run as is. However many of them seem, to me at least, to need some tweaking. I'm no map guru, I only just fired up the editor for the first time today, but I think I can improve and upate a few of them. So in this thread I'll do just that, covering an updated map in each post, giving credit to the author and uploading the files needed to use it. I hope to include the original .map file, along with my updated ______ Som.map file and I'll also throw in a NI _____ Som.map file too, for those who like No Indy maps (I know I play virtually nothing else).
Do please feel free to post here and point me to solid looking Dom2 maps that could do with a bit of tweaking to nostart settings, underwater race settings, terrain types, population sizes etc. You can also request NI versions of any maps - it would be helpful if you pointed me to the map though.
Anyway, here's what I've done so far.

Are you sure water nations can be disabled? I think the Middle-Earth map is supposed to do that, but it doesn't work.

It's a shortlisted bug in the map commands section. #seaplayers 0 is ignored when determining nations randomly.
Sombre
June 12th, 2008, 04:08 PM
I didn't use #seaplayers. I used the code from SixLands which sets the permissable nations as every single nation number except the underwater ones. This includes unused mod available nation numbers.
It does seem to work.

This one might need a second version because I'm not 100% sure how well it would actually play. It might need some bridges between cutoff land provinces etc. It is pretty though and could be good for aquatic/amphibious themed games.

Wow, thank you very much . You know I love your NI Map versions. Some of these maps have a cool embossed retro look like Cirlani. For the Yalun map, perhaps a seaport connection instead of a bridge would work best - just my opinion. All of them will get plently of use. Thanks again!

Thanks. I should have some larger maps up in the future. I really want to upload an updated Sharivar but the size is insane - it's 50 megs or so.

Maybe you can ask IW to allow you yo upload it to their server?- Or else use a public server...
Sombre
June 22nd, 2008, 11:44 AM
I don't know of any reliable public servers that would keep a 50 meg or so zip up for any length of time.
I'll probably just span it on multiple rar or zip archives and upload it bit by bit. Or I could possibly resize the map a bit because it is pretty crazy in terms of size.

Beautiful maps! You're truly an artist, Sombre. Amazing that you can do such nice maps in so many different styles.
You do realize "Dom2 maps" in the original post means that these maps were done for Dominions 2, do you? Sombre is making them playable, not drawing them. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's great that someone is finally doing this! /threads/images/Graemlins/icon44.gif /threads/images/Graemlins/icon09.gif

Nope, didn't realize that http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I was under the impression he'd drawn them for Dom 2. I should have read the first post a little (or a lot) more closely. Still, nice of you to post them, Sombre.

Yeah I don't want anyone to think I'm doing the graphics for these.
All I'm doing is upating terrain types and doing other such tweaking to make them dom3 ready. The main thing is probably setting all the nostarts up.

Great work. Anyone still use the Dom3 map wiki (http://dom3maps.wikidot.com/system:newmed)?
Sombre
June 25th, 2008, 12:57 PM
I think the dom3 map wiki is great,.. but in practice people aren't really using it that much. If people were actively reviewing the maps and uploading new ones I'd probably be more inclined to make use of it myself.
If someone wants to they can make entries for any of these maps on there though.

I'm updating Yalun To to version 2 simply because I got the mapzoom wrong the first time. I haven't changed anything else, so if it never bothered you, no need to redownload.
I'd love to just edit the original post, but for some reason I can't work out how to.

Could you update the older posts to show the preview images directly again, too?
And maybe an index for all the maps you have completed on the first post... :angel

I'm sure someone can explain it better, but there is a long explanation on the Shrapnel page. But it boils down to this, you have about an hour to edit a post.
However, I found that I was able to edit my mod thread after a couple of days to revise the mod, so there are some exceptions.

I didn't change any thread title, at least not knowingly. Didn't touch that. Strange.
Edit: seems to be a forum bug. I needed to change the OP's title twice to fix it.

I really appreciate the NI maps, they're nice to play on for games where you want to play against a specific nation, rather than a specific nation that uses mostly independent slingers and archers with some national troops and mages sprinkled in. It also is very handy for measuring mod nations against vanilla when they start doing strange, un-dominionslike things.
