View Full Version : Question on exploding star
CW

One of my stars has this comment attached:
"Star is prone to violent eruptions and has an unstable core".
Is it telling me that this star is potentially explosive? I gathered that I will have 3 years warning beforehand, correct?

I have no answer for you, but another question...what do you mean by 3 years warning? I've never received any warnings about possible star 'explosions.'

You should. It's just that you don't get 2.9 years, 2.8 years, 2.7 years, etc. and it is easy to forget and/or easy to miss that one little message warning you that your star is about to explode. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
Just switch the event severity to 'high' and it should avoid it.

I would look up into your lifeless eyes and wave like this..." *waggle* "...can you and your associates arrange that for me, Mr. Morden?"

What I have seen is that this means there is a chance that the star will explode/implode somewhere down the line. Doesn't always happen but I would plan on it. I have had not only my one system reduced to astroids when this took place but on 2 occasions it also took out my adjoining system as well. Lost over 14 planets between both systems. As for warnings I have had anywhere from 0-3yr notice. The only thing you can do is ship your people out on transports to other systems and if you have the worm hole closer, close all adjoing worm holes to that system or you could lose 1 or all of them as well, if the star blows.... If you get a warning act fast don't wait, I'd always keep 1 or 2 transport in the system put them in mothballs until/if you need them.
good luck
just some ideas mac

Or you can do what I did and remove that line from the events text
When you can stop it using tech. I will add it back in.
You think with stellar manu maxed out you could correct the problem but nooooooooooo

""Star is prone to violent eruptions and has an unstable core"."
I've tested it. That setting does aboltutely JACK as described in abilities.txt. It may function in some other way, and he forgot to change the description, but it certainly doesn't work as described.

Although I am a relatively inexperienced player, I have never received a warning that my star is about to explode.... at least not until AFTER the fact. It just happened in a game I was playing this past week....again no warning.

In one multiplayer game within 20 turns i got the message that my homeworld system was going boom in 30 turns.
Natually of course I lost the game.
Surrendered. But on the way another system went boom as well.
After that I did not like them.
Esp. when I was playing religious and had the lucky trait for that game.
I did like the humour in it.

Tough break! No one likes their primary to blow up... it certainly brings the property values down http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif - my sympathies.

Are you sure they were exploding naturally and not because stellar manipulation by other player?

For an example of a Star-blowing-up Warning, see My scenario (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/ubbuploads/suicide_junkie/HomecomingScenario.zip)where your star has just started the countdown to a Nova.
Close the scenario box, and check the message log right away.
One of the Messages is "Plasma Instability".

SJ, I tried your scenario but the game could not load it. I unzipped all of the files into the SEIV\scenarios folder, anything else that I must do?

I have questions about Unstable stars.
I haven't yet had a star naturally explode on me yet, but in one of my current games, 5 of my systems have unstable stars.
I checked stellarabilities.txt and the other appropriate .txt data files to try to figure out what determining factors play a part in unstable stars exploding.
So far as I can see, the unstable star sector types have a 0% chance of exploding, as set in stellarabilities.txt. But some of you say that you have had stars explode on you before.
So, what is determining when stars explode naturally?

Unless I am mistaken, the unstable star tag doesn't mean anything, just like star color, age, brightness, etc.
What causes stars to explode is a random event which requires you to have set event severity to catastrophic at the beginning of the game.

I like the fact that you can create and destroy stars but stabilize them. Nah http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

So am I safe in assuming that the unstable star tag was supposed to do something, but Malfador just never got around to implementing the ability?
I am guessing a resounding 'yes' is going to be heard. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
