I am finishing my 2nd game of midlife cluster, medium size galaxy, medium AI just to figure the game out.

For my next game I want to try midlife cluster, large galaxy, High AI.

Am I going to get pounded with so little experience? What can I add to make it interesting. I was thinking about making some of the races religious, psychic, organic, etc.

I am not ready to use mods or import AI's, just trying to stick to the stock things I can modify when creating a game.

Go for a large galaxy, lots of "hard" AIs, no neutrals, and a medium bonus. Or low bonus, if you aren't sure of your empire-management or warrior skills.

If you are playing with tactical combat, go medium, and be sure to sim battles between your newest designs and the known enemies.

And don't worry about being pounded. When the odds are insumountable, you can get quite a bit of pleasure from the little victories.

Never was a big fan of the large galaxies. In a small or medium-small, once you basically know who's going to win, the game's pretty much over, but in a large, it drags on endlessly with a predetermined outcome.

Once you've got that down, try a simultanous move game..very different.

Well I breezed through the 2nd game and think I have the interface and some of the shortcuts all down, so my 3rd game is:

Mid-Life
Large Galaxy
High AI
Medium Tech Cost, no starting bonus for anyone.

I created one race each of Organic, Crystall, Temporal, Psychic to add into the mix. I am assuming it will take the ones I created and random generate the rest?

Since I havent had a good battle in the first 2 games (never saw anything bigger than a CL) and my own logistics have been the toughest enemy, I am looking forward to it.

Well should be fun, will report back. Not the best starting position.

One played against humans! PBW is the easiest way if going about this.

i think the best way to get a challenge out of the basic AI, is to go small quadrant, low AI, High difficulty, High bonus. in a small quadrant with a high bonus, you will have a hard time overcoming their production abilities and will have to resort to using tactics.
