Greetings!

This game will be a contest between 18 land nations. Any vanilla land nation can be chosen. All skill levels are welcome. Think Kingmaker but smaller! Game will be hosted on Llamaserver. Thank you, Llama!

Settings:
Will be defaulted to MA with the exception of HoF being 15.

Mods:
SingleAgeComplete - http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=34265&page=5
WorthyHeroes1.8 - http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=36670

Map:
The map is 370 provinces and all land! Many mountains should make for interesting conflicts around choke points. Start locations will be chosen, but it will be random placement. RGB file attached!

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/49/timewarpv2yl2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Turns:
24hrs until turn 20, 48hrs until turn 50, 72hrs for remainder.

Victory:
There can be only one! It's a fight to the death or until remaining players agree on a single victor.

Diplomacy:
Anything goes.

Exploits:
No copying Bogus's orders!
No overfilling other players labs on purpose!

Delays:
Delays will be granted on request within reason.

Have no fear! :D From my previous games with random maps (Kingmaker, etc) I believe only the host needs the map file, in this case it will be llamaserver. I sent a pm to llama this morning for confirmation and am waiting for a reply. If it turns out the players need the map file I'll post it.

I should have checked the map editor without the map file in my folder to see if you guys could view it. It looks like you can't. My apologies, I'll post a jpeg when I get the time.

I would also like to start getting the pretenders in after the long weekend, so the scope, and therefore the map may change (downsize). It will still be a random map with many mountains and choke points though, so no worries on the 'type'.

It looks like my assumption on the map is correct. Llamabeast has confirmed that players only need the image and not the map file.

We're closer to twenty than I thought we would be, therefore I will extend the recruiting process to Friday.

sum1lost
October 16th, 2008, 06:07 PM
Actually, I won my last game as MA Pangaea, though I haven't reported it yet. But, yes, I won a game as MA mictlan. I'm going for a much less optimized build this time, though, if its any help. (Last time was a double bless, fullstop. This time it should be single blessing, so much less powerful. However, if there are objections, I will be happy to change my nation pick.

Slobby
October 16th, 2008, 06:32 PM
Aapeli - Yup there is! MA Ulm is all yours. :D

sum1lost - I have no issues with you playing MA Mictlan.

All - It doesn't look like we'll get the full 20 players by Friday, so I'm going to have to generate a new map. The size of the map will be a bit over 20 provinces/player.

Slobby
October 19th, 2008, 09:19 PM
Evenin ya'll,

Llamabeast is going to manually load the map into llamaserver (thank you Llama), so once that's done then I'll set the game up to accept pretenders.

We may have lost Shogi, seeing as I haven't received an updated nation from him, so tentatively there is an open spot! Hopefully someone else wants to play.

The image file is also attached the first post and ready for download.

The fact that your pretender died to VotD doesn't make Votd buggy. Try not to kill so many = ).

But Slobby, can you advise on what will be allowed/disallowed, if anything....?

sum1lost
October 20th, 2008, 07:08 PM
I'd like to request that battlefield retreat/MoD be banned. I'm ambivalent about copying bogus orders.

JimMorrison
October 20th, 2008, 07:31 PM
BE + Retreat is definitely fixed. Someone tried to do a Wrathful Skies + Retreat to me in another game, and the spell ended after the first blast, as the mage had left the field (he still had a 100% SR SC on the field though).

Slobby
October 20th, 2008, 08:15 PM
And the winner is Jim Morrison! :D I'll give Shogi until tommorow to reply (that'll be a week), if he doesn't then the spot is yours! Sorry to Jarkko and Ylvali, but that fills us up. However if there are other players that 'disappear' then you two will have first crack at taking a spot.

MoD is fixed, just tried it myself, so no worries about the BE + retreat.

VotD - personally I think it is fairly easy to resist (I cast it and cast it but the darned SCs keep resisting it!). Imo if your SC can't resist it, then really it's the same as being subject to soul slay/enslave mind, and therefore fair game.

Copying Bogus's orders. We'll say that's an exploit and shall be banned. I'll update the first post.

Are there any other exploits that players are concerned about? No others come to my mind.

chrispedersen
October 21st, 2008, 01:20 AM
Overfilling labs.
Cheating with seduction or moves (grouping commanders and issuing an order valid for the first which will thus copy to all other commanders).

Mostly, I'd just say whats on the exploits list..

Anyone mind if I switch from EA-Mict to LA-Mict?

1. Overfilling labs - yup none of that this game.

2. Issuing order - Wasn't aware of that one, how would it work?

3. There's an exploit list?

4. No problems here, consider it changed!

General: I just looked at what Valerius banned from his games, there's Bogus, the lab thing, and the BE + retreat, which is now fixed. I'm tentatively leaning towards going with his example.

chrispedersen

Um, Slobby, I was in your list originally as ea-mictlan - so you still have an open spot.

I've seen an exploit list - I just don't remember where.

There is a whole class of movement and other bugss.

For example.. have one seductress and 3 scouts. Group them. Issue seduction orders to the succubus and all the scouts will carry out seduction orders.

The same applies for moving too far out of a sieged fort, or moving out of a fort at all...

So ummmmm. I followed your link in the top post, and downloaded - SingleAgeComplete.dm - from your DL link, and placed it in my mods folder.

But, the game is demanding I have Single Age Mod.dm instead. Should I just rename this file? I am a bit confused.

Slobby

Yes rename it, I don't know why llama renamed the file, but it was.

Hrrrm Ok here is a silly question. Does a province next to your capital that is cut off by mountains still contribute resources to your capital if you take the province, even though there is no direct path to it from your capital? Its either that.. Or watch my boys get trampled by the elephants in the other province next to them.

well, it is adjacent.. Kinda just adjacent and separated by mountains...

JimMorrison
October 28th, 2008, 07:33 AM
In terms of game mechanics, no, it is not adjacent. A province can technically have neighbors anywhere on the map, as far as visual reckoning is concerned - and will take resources from any neighbors, and only neighbors.

This is an interesting situation. Given that he's MA Ulm, and assuming that he's gone AWOL would you guys like me to try to find a sub?

By the time I got in and checked the server he would have already staled, assuming he didn't put in his turn, it's impossible to tell. I've put the forcehosting command in so when llama fixes the server the game will be on it's merry way once again.

So he's playing one of the weakest nations in an mp game with almost all the heavies and will no doubt be targeted, and he may have staled his 2nd turn and thus be behind in the expansion phase. It's a dire situation for any player.

If he is awol it might be just as good, and potentially quicker, to just set the nation to ai once the servers back up.

Actually, getting a sub sounds like a good idea. Ulm's got some very potent anti-sacreds when used well. Darkwind used them to absolutely decimate a sacred, flying army of helheims in Kingmaker, and I've had them used against me in aquarium, and they still made a mess of my first wave of eagle warriors

Stop this madnes! I am here and have now submitted my turn (phew I was lucky thanks to the sudden difficulties on the lamaserver). You almost dumped me off didnt you? Well I wont blame you.
And what comes to the comment of Ulm being weak, well maybe your right, but its still my favourite nation. This is my second time playing mp with it (last time I was trampled by caelian mammoths).

By the way, if I just send my turn will it then be accepted when the server is back up?

chrispedersen

Currently I am playing LA T'ien Ch'i with Jomon as my teammate, We are at war with the Mictlan Abysia Team.

I am fighting Mictlan and winning my teammate is fighting Abysia and he's started to loose. I currently hold about 53 Provinces and Mictlan who I am fighting is down to about 15 although he won a battle this last turn and scattered my largest army (Although he is still surrounded by very heavy PD which I have everywhere)

Jomon on the other hand holds around 20 Provinces and Abysia who he is fighting has around 25 Provinces and a very experienced Prince of Death (With about 5 afflictions) who has been causing huge problems for him. Unfortunately My teammate did not recruit anything but Cavalry and has been paying for that recently and neglected building more forts and only has 2 forts in the Fall of the 4th year and one of the two forts are under siege as of this turn.

I have been playing for him the last 2 turns and I am working on a few things to turn it around for him which I will not say on here should my opponents read this. But if anyone Is good with LA Jomon and looking for another game I could use someone to take his place either temporarily or Permanently I'm not sure as I have not heard from him if he's coming back or what.

No one is *good* with LA Jomon. Their GoHajamoto's are good heavy infinitry, and their sacreds are much the same. But their Summons are too expensive, they have few SC chassis, their samurai archers cost way too many resources. They have great researchers but no battle mages to speak of.

I wouldn't be surprised he was losing to abysia. I would be surprised if anyone could fix it.

But I can take his place for a few days if you wish.

I don't know that I'd consider Jomon to be that weak although it seems most people do...

But essentially Jomon only has to survive for a short while longer while I mop up whats left of DrPraetorious's Mictlan armies and begin my march on Abysia. Mictlan has a good triple Bless and is far stronger than Abysia's forces that Ive seen so If Ive taken care of Mictlan this easy, Abysia will be a piece of cake when his attention is divided between both Jomon from his south and T'ien Ch'i from his north, south and west.

But I'd be glad to have you sub for Jomon :)

I'm unsure if it worked, the game page still shows ma tien/ma pyth/ma ulm as staling turn 4, yet I see I didn't get notification that the game crashed on the rehost due to dominions error.

Ahhhhh that new patch screwed me up.. I was going to use my size 6 chariots this turn to take out the elephants in a neighboring province since my chariots couldnt be trampled by them... Guess thats out the fricken window now.

Things like that make me wish current games wouldn't be patched while they were already underway as it may foul up an already planned strategy. But I suppose there are times when your happy to see changes from patches in games your playing too... This just isn't one of them...

JimMorrison
November 10th, 2008, 08:22 PM
Remember, size 6 trampling size 5 will not do much damage due to the small difference in size. I'm sure you'd still do pretty alright like that.

Not patching would seem to be the best way to go (someone was even more dismayed, as they are playing LA R'lyeh in a MP game right now), but that would force everyone to have 2 installations, and switch back and forth to do their turns, and would be a real headache for the Llamaserver (and the Beast behind it).

Thanks for the info Jim, I had forgoten about the size difference changing the trample effects. All I could remember was that being ethereal made trample pretty ineffective.

By the way, was Independant strength really set to default? seems like everywhere I go I run into Elephants, Knights, Cataphracts etc...

I think the bigger issues are that they fixed issues that were causing game crashing (such as our glory game). Correcting those are probably worth the headache it will cause individual players.

Well, it has seemed to me that when size 4 units get trampled by elephants, they don't really take much damage.

Also, trogs and minotaurs are both size 3, and are far less efficient at killing size 2 units, than elephants are.

And yeah, 3 of my home's neighbors have Heavy Cav. :( The other 3 were low pop. \:happy:/

Once this turn hosts I will extend it by 24 hours and look for a sub, if I cannot find a sub before the 48 hour mark I will set MA T'ien to ai, afterwards we'll go back to the 24hour hosting interval.

Slobby, three of us staled this last turn - After a game restart, I think more time to get back in a regular rythmn is in order. I got a turn late last night, and when I wake this morning, to do the turn - I have another turn. I'd *like* to request a turn roll back.

Slobby,

I give you kudos for starting up interesting games. To my mind you really started this fad of changing the victory conditions - which help set up great games.

That being said, I'd again like to encourage you to take better care after events such as forum outages, or servers being down.
The time of server processing changes. In my case the entire cycle of warningn and processing occurred while I slept.

I know I wasn't aware of what time the server was hosting now. I also know apparently I wasn't the only one, as two other people also staled.

The loss of progress in the game is extreme at this time in the game. Boundaries with neighbors are being decided, mercenaries are highly relevent, etc. Mictlan, being dominion limited rather than gold limited, suffers more from this problem. I lost 1/6 of production for the game by missing a turn.

The reason you don't wish to continue with two empties - is because it give the neighbors too much advantage. This is the same reason that I think that the turn should have been rerun.

It changes the complexion of the game too much, when a significant number stale. ***And I don't see the significant problem on rerunning the turn***

Anyway, I would have thought my comments worth a response or a comment in public or private. What is the problem with rerunning? or why you didn't wish to.

Forgetting personal feelings for a moment would the game have been better with all the people running a turn, or three people missing? I have two neighbors that *should* take advantage of Mictlans lack of troops - to roll up the empty territories.

Anyways, best wishes to all.

I was *quite* looking forward to this game - and I was enjoying it.

Yeah I dont know what happened but I staled this last turn too.. I know I did the turn, in fact it was when I commented in the game thread about the patch changing things for me and I thought I sent the turn in but somehow something must have gotten screwed up because it says I staled.

I'd certainly like to have a roll back but if not I guess I'll just consider the gold earned from last turn to be money I can spend on a new fort.

General:
The game, as outlined in opening thread, is to be 24h for the first bit. Yes, there have been issues with llamaserver, however every time there was a hickup the correction has been made and the 24h interval reset to when the correciton was made. Just because the server goes awol should not be any reason to forget about the games that you have committed to. I'm the game admin not a babysitter.

More in reply to Chris:
I really don't see how hard it is to check your email atleast 1-2 times per 24h period and get your turn in. Apparently it is. Maybe you're too busy, real life does get in the way, however saying after you staled that you got the turn late at night and wish to roll back just won't jive. If you had posted before going to bed that you needed an extension, I could have done that. Honestly you had the turn, could have easily checked to see when it is due and gone from there. Twice now you have threatened to leave the game (in fact this time you resigned even before I could reply to your post!), well I've taken you up on your word and have already found a sub for your position.

And as for 'starting a fad' I really do not know where you're coming from. This is the first game I've organized, perhaps you mistake me for someone else.

Regardless what's done is done. I have found subs for MA T'ien and LA Mictlan and the game will go on, with perhaps one more extension to get the second sub set up. My apologies to the players for the delay.

Actually, as you know that last bits not true; I sent an email to you, you made a choice, and responded to my email.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Slobby, you make it sound as if the 24h deadline has been rigorously enforced, when in fact it hasn't. Not counting the llama delay, the game was delayed on the at least 3 times going back through the threads.

I got interested in resigning when you arbitrarily delayed the game 3 days without word or explanation, till after the fact.

I grant that I signed up for a 24 hour game. But processing times that vary wildly and unpredictably do not make it easier.

And you never answered the question -why *not* just rerun the turn.

When I have hosted (and a thankless job it is - so kudos to you for that), I find the critical question is - what is the best course of action *for the game*.

So things I think are critical are:

-Explaining whats going on, when theres a delay.
-If a turn crashes explaining, asking for opinions on how to deal with it, and then explain the decision you made.
-Once you make a decision, try to apply it consistently.
-Make decisions that damage the game the least. I think thats the critical point.

So, in this particular instance, I think the game is damaged by having three staling positions, especially with a plausible reason why.

I also think that having a substitute play a position, damages the game, because the substitute presumably will not know how the pretenenders and dominion were optimized, why the research was done in the way it was etc.

Now it could be that there were huge game issues; reasons to not rerun the turn. But without an explanation it just seems you chose not to, because you didn't *want* to.

Anyway, thanks for setting up the game. Good luck & good gaming

But there is nothing not consonant with what I said.

"Without a rollback, I'm not interested ..." is a conditional. It means with a rollback I wanted to continue.

You then emailed me saying "sorry to see you go". Ie., I'm not rerunning the turn.

I have no idea about this game, but it is worth mentioning that rollbacks should generally be avoided except in extreme circumstances. I've written quite a long ramble about why on the LlamaServer - if you click on admin options for any game and select to do a rollback, you can see my essay. Despite its presence people frequently do rollbacks and frequently rather regret it.

I totally agree, after having seen the terrible results firsthand, and secondhand a few times now. :P

Though, I would argue that technically in this sort of situation it's not such a big issue, as I don't think anyone has initiated intra-player hostilities yet, we're just a few turns in. On the other hand, I also understand Slobby's stated position on the matter as well. ;) Sometimes you're soft, sometimes you're hard, but most times someone will be dissatisfied either way you go, so you make the call and move on.....

Ok, I was actually about to take out Tien Chi's capital when wksdsl took over to sub for TC So instead of taking the poor guy out on his first turn Ive teamed up with him to show him the ropes in MP, I think this is his first MP game. He really wouldn't have had any chance any other way starting off with only one province (under siege at that) and 20 troops at this point in the game So I am giving him some of my Land to help him out too.

I might have been better off just taking his capital getting another fort and several more gems per turn but then he'd have just wasted his time agreeing to sub and all that.

Time is fleeting
Madness takes its toll

Doing the time warp
Drinking those moments when
The blackness would hit me
And the void would be calling

Let's do the time warp again
Let's do the time warp again

It's just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
Put your hands on you hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane

Let's do the time warp again
Let's do the time warp again

It's so dreamy
Oh fantasy free me
So you can't see me, no not at all
In another dimension
With voyeuristic intention
Well secluded
I see all

With a bit of a mind flip
You're into the time slip
And nothing can ever be the same
You've spaced out of sensation
Like you're under sedation.

Let's do the time warp again
Let's do the time warp again

A likely story!

We call you twice oathbreaker. Pythium certainly did send a reply, and furthermore, as we had no troops on your border, there was no reason to think we would attack. C'tis, by contrast, cut off our access to expand, then betrayed us!

Not only that, but reviewing our scouting reports, you had been maneveuring your armies to take our lands for quite some time.

For anyone who is interested, we observed C'tis armies moving around two-to three provinces behind the border for some time, keeping them always one province separated from our border, except for a small force of chariots. We assumed that this was out of respect for our borders, as we had been doing the same thing. Instead, they positioned themselves to send in a small strike force (a Shedu to one province, a handful of chariots to another) to conceal their larger forces (one including nearly a dozen sauromancers and 100+troops, and another holding even more troops!) moving up behind them. We shall now make a stand at our capital- hopefully, our air elemental summoning communion will drive the fiends off!

If you don't believe me than check your mail for earlier turns. Turn 10 is when you received the message I believe.

Even so I am prepared to give that turn to a third party just to prove my point.

And yes when I met no reply I did plan to attack you as soon as possible and it was a nice entrapment.

Oh yes of course I have forgotten to brag about our forging capability. The forges of Ulm are at your disposal:hammer:, and that goes for all of you (unless you are at war with me:mad:). We can forge anything from the paths of fire, water, earth and astral.

Unfortunately nature nor death is not on the list, but the price for the girdle of might is 80 gold in cash or 8 earth, fire, or astral gems.

Please let us know if you need anytihng from our masterful smiths.

A valiant defending force's work is never done, eh?

Oh, well. Almost to Const 4.

Anyone who wants to attack EA C'tis may as well while they funnel resources into attacking our capital, which is guarded by archtheurgs and a tough pretender. It is the most disturbing and sad thing.

I had about 300 men, and a handful of Thunderstrikers (sure, half of them were well equipped soulless), and he fended me off with 20 mages and about 80 archers, and most of those mages were Alchemists, ie- no Banishment.

C'tis all ages seems to be doing well by score graphs in this game, and yet many people consider C'tis very week.
I guess this proves them wrong.

JimMorrison
January 2nd, 2009, 06:41 PM
Well C'tis, by many standards, has rather crappy national troops.

Expansion isn't necessarily hard with an awake SC however, and early wars likewise. The trick being that even though their mages are quite powerful, they're not necessarily versatile, so late game has few options, compared to the counters others can develop against them.

But it is interesting, and fun, to see them all doing so well in this game, I'm curious what will become of it.

Dimaz
January 3rd, 2009, 03:27 AM

Poison slingers and Lizard Warriors are far from crappy troops, and are very cost effective, sure they all become obsolete by the mid-late stage of the game but so do most troops.

I find C'tis powerful in all stages of the game, but the most in the early when you can rush just about anyone with hordes of undead.

JimMorrison
January 3rd, 2009, 07:02 AM
Lizard Warriors lack shields, and while they are situationally useful, their armor isn't high enough to consider them much without a lot of support. Poison Slingers are hilariously reckless, and will cause horrible friendly fire casualties unless you buff to 100% PR.

I think the paradigm is simply that unless you can use a nation's troops to good effect without creating very specific circumstances - they kind of suck. Doesn't mean they are useless, just means that other nations can be more effective with less effort.

Of course, effective use of combined arms tactics can go a long way, but for example that is hard to do against indies, when cost effectiveness of troops means the world. In that context, it is hard to make a C'tissian force that will take multiple indie provinces without significant attrition, and that's definitely not a good thing. :p

I find C'tis powerful in all stages of the game, but the most in the early when you can rush just about anyone with hordes of undead.

See above about powerful mages that mostly just do 1 thing well. :p

Executor
January 3rd, 2009, 08:34 AM
C'tis can handle indies just fine, Serpant dancers, chariots, swamp guards, elite warriors, all of them do very good against indies. Hell, look at my provinces if you don't think so.
C'tis does lack magic diversity but doesn't need a bless so you can easily take a rainbow or a SC pretender for early expansion and still have good scales.
They are absolute killers in research ( again the graphs) and plus they can make tons of skull mentors.
That gives a significant lead against any other nation in battle magic, so poison cloud, nether darts, terror, shadow blast, storm of thorns, soul drain... you pick, just put that heavy infantry in front, place a few snakes with standards and go crazy with spells.

lwarmonger
January 3rd, 2009, 02:41 PM
Throw in 6-7 harvesters of sorrow equipped with bane venom charms (something C'tis can produce in large quantities)and you also create an almost invulnerable force that can devastate an enemy economy in a very short period of time (since it takes a turn to move an army in, a turn to set it patrolling to reduce unrest, as long as you keep your HoS on the move you can permanently impair, and eventually destroy, an enemy economy quite quickly). All the while your city guards are keeping their army uselessly outside your walls while you set the stage for a successful battle and subsequent rollback... this is especially effective as MA C'tis because of your dominion effects.

JimMorrison
January 3rd, 2009, 07:33 PM
Well I wasn't trying to start a huge debate, was just pointing out that C'tis is considered to have some significant flaws, and then illustrating what those are thought to be. ;) I am not here to convince anyone. :p

Aye--8 turns with them not building up forces, etc. Someone should have easy pickings taking them out.

They don't have any income. They own one small province, and a besieged castle, and what little income they get is eaten by a score of mages.

Unfortunately, those very mages (mage-priests, many of them) decimated the force that was to take the castle, and so I've been forced to just sit on them for the time being.

They'd be well done and gone, but Midgard decided to get all frisky with me. Ironic there, as they had violated the terms of our NAP by taking the Hinnom capital, which we had agreed that Lanka would take, and so I was going to come punish them anyways. :p This whole game has been odd for Lanka, but we are proud and strong, and I've no doubt that those crusty iceberg huggers will get what's coming to them. Which secret weapon? O.o

I'm very upset that my Davana, with its lowly 19 MR succumbed to your first (or was it second?) cast..... Even at 19, he should have endured at least a few rounds of spam. :(

The Rakshasi was even more upsetting though. I have no idea how she got set to Defend, but I'm sure you know she was meant to Hide, and then start picking off your bastard Galdermen. :p Of course I got screwed on Air income, so I can't really gear another..... Besides, you may or may not know, C'tis (one of them, I dunno) has decided to join in the war. So your secret weapon - serendipity - has been launched with or without your knowledge, and will signal the end of this troubled game. :p

I know Lanka are heavy hitters, so it's not like you get a cookie for doing well with them, but damn..... I had such a brilliant start, even going #1 income with 2Turmoil. o.O But splitting my forces between Hinnom (who was almost dead) and MA TC (who was barely there) led to slight defeats on both fronts, setting me up for a horrendous attrition rate before this conflict with Vanheim could get underway.

Oh if only I had those 1000 men that I lost to TC's Fire Arrows and Totally-Random-Full-Spectrum-Evocation-Salvos™, the war would have gone differently..... until C'tis came out of nowhere anyways. :re:

I really wanted to start sort of near Ermor. REALLY did. I had plans worked out for how to deal with them, and then what to do with their Death income once they were dealt with. ;) Oh well, next time. I'll see you all in hell! YAH! :p (not quitting or AI or anything, that's just fun to yell)

Well, the fact that you caught me off balance with your first strikes, and then the stupid errors I've made since, made you a bit overconfident, I think. ;)

Though I think it was stupid that my pretender would only get off 1 Earthquake and go to 174 Fatigue - not even hurting your army. :p I still don't understand why her Fatigue wasn't half that, and then she'd cast again. I'm glad she didn't since you had Fog Warriors up, but meh.
