I was wondering what would happen if you made a commander (say lets call him "captain" for now).

If captain (recruitable) had the shapeshift command to shapeshift to another commander (not recruitable) called general (with better stats) then you could shapeshift all captains you recruit into generals.

But the army can only have one general, to many captains on the ships is not a good thing (well in dominions it would onlybe nice but let's follow that old saying)

So if we made the general #unique. What would happen?

Would only the first captain be able to get a promotion and the rest not? (which might be nice for all sorts of stuff to use, only if the old general dies you can have a new one)
or with princes and kings (the king is dead, long live the king ect)
I wonder what would happen if you tried to shapeshift the 2nd one though.

I gtg to bed now, I sort of hope someone (gandalf?) might be intrigued by this and I'll have an answer when I look again tomorrow :D (or maybe it's already been tried and someone can just tell me :D)

( the thing that put me on this was Sombre's thinking about his warhammer empire mages to be honest, when he started using unique patriarchs I suddenly thought this might be a nice way to get them if it works)

PS a nation based on this would be fun to, if you made some sort of chain of command you could make all sorts of battlefield promotions. lots of captains --> 1 major (unique) --> 1 colonel (unique) --> 1 general (unique) all of the queing up, just waiting for their superior to die so they can get a promotion.

Shapeshifting appears to ignore the restrictions completely, allowing multiple copies of units marked as unique.

How about a national magic site.
If it allows a unique as a recruitable commander will it work?

OR if unique only applies to summons...
how about a national site that does one of those "enter to summon" things to get a General.

I do like the idea.

The game assumes that units with shapechange are still the same unit, and thus they're all unique or none of the forms are. The closest to what you want is the special role that pretenders and prophets play in the game. Maybe what you want can be emulated with artifacts, "captain's badge" or something, that grants some boni.

Unique tags work with recruitment. That's not what the OP is after though I guess.

no to bad would;ve given some nice options, if you can all shapeshift to become general it's not going to be a very organised army :D
