View Full Version : MP Wombat - LA team game. Game on.

ano
January 29th, 2009, 08:36 PM
I feel ready to start a new team game and I welcome anyone who wants to join.
Game link (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=Wombat)

Settings:
Era - late
Map - Alexander (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com//attachment.php?attachmentid=5900&d=1199233709) by PashaDawg, fixed positions and few other modifications for this game. If you already have the graphic file of this map then you don't need to download anything. Map file is attached, however. You may test your pretender\scales in real conditions
Mods - Worthy Heroes 1.8 (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com//attachment.php?attachmentid=5714&d=1193952379)
Players - 18
Sites - 50%
Renaming - on
HoF - 15
Indies - 6
Rest - standard
Host - Llamaserver. Please read the FAQ (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=35160) if you don't know how to use it
Schedule - 24h until turn 18, then it will be negotiable. Delays on requests, of course.

Teams, nations and players. Blue numbers in brackets are starting provinces for the nations.
Agartha (Quitti, 18) - Patala (Juffos, 11)
Pangaea (statttis, 135) - Abysia (Trumanator, 92)
Mictlan (veto, 23) - Jomon (don_Pablo, 241)
R'lyeh (Unoptimized, 281) - Man (AreaOfEffect, 283)
Caelum (AdmiralZhao, 81) - Pythium (seej, 130)
C'tis (ano, 212) - Ulm (karnoza, 203)
Marignon (Evilhomer, 96) - Atlantis (Baalz, 188)
Tien Ch'i (Kortek, 144) - Utgard (Revolution, 53)
Gath (klagrok , 217) - Midgard (Cadel, 118)

Please, PM me if you your nation is stated wrongly and you're going to control another nation in a team

Some more notes:
- the more experienced you are the better however though Ermor and R'lyeh are not banned they are not allowed to veteran players.
- to be competitive you should find a reliable partner who won't let you down in the most critical moment. You should build up some team strategy based on your races and their weak/strong points.
- pacts and NAP's are supposed to be honored
- partners may watch turns of each other and may substitute each other if there's a need

Alright, Myself and Kortek will be on a team and claim Tien Ch'i and Utgard. Undecided who will play what.

...no agartha?

ano
January 29th, 2009, 08:52 PM
Hello. Nice to meet you again. I played no game without meeting you - that's a good tradition! .. Probably, I'm mistaken. There was one.
I forgot Agartha? Oops...

Trumanator
January 29th, 2009, 10:01 PM
I'd like to give it a shot. Preferably as Marignon, but I will go with anything except Ermor and Ry'leh as long as I can get a good teamate who can teach me a lot. :)

ano
January 29th, 2009, 10:32 PM
Trumanator, glad to see you in. Ask people you know - probably they'll agree to build a team with you.

GrudgeBringer

I'd like to give it a shot but I am not that familiar with LA,

If you have a spot with a vet that would like to teach a quick learner a thing or two I would love to learn AND be a good pupil... Regardless of anything else I can promise, I will be there till the end, I have no quit in me.

If you don't have a spot that fits, NP I can always wait till the next one.

Hi, I'm about to be eliminated from Rothfuss and so I can fit another game in my schedule. I'd like to be Midgard but I'm not picky. I wouldn't mind being paired with another noob - the best way to learn is with a challenge :)

Cadel
January 30th, 2009, 12:38 AM
I'm a beginner, but I'd love to play. I've played 1 MP game before so I obviously am pretty new. I'll take anyone as a teammate and play whatever team is left, but I'd rather play w/ someone who has a bit of experience :). Anyways, thanks ahead of time.

Hello, I think I will sign up. I'd like to give the Ry'leh and Man combo one more try. Me playing as Man of course. I've secured Unoptimized as a partner as well. This should be his first time playing Ry'leh in MP.

I have hopes that this will be loads of fun.

Hello, I think I will sign up.

And I think, "sweet, I should ask AoE if he wants to team up!", then I read the rest of the post. :p

I'm probably in plenty of other games already, but I'll watch to see if it fills up fast or not before deciding now. ;)

Evilhomer
January 30th, 2009, 05:33 AM
Well team games are fun, count me in. I probably fall under the veteran category by now. I would either like to play:

- Ermor (which I am newb with, never played them in MP or SP)
or
- Marignon (which I am comfortable with and would like another try with)

However I am willing to play any team, its not a big deal what nation I get. Searching for an allie willing to play, if you are new or experienced, either is fine with me.

ano
January 30th, 2009, 06:54 AM
Hello, everybody. Nice to see you in. I put all people without a team to the waitlist because you can't choose a team unless you have a teammate.

I'd like also to indicate that team game is generally harder and more time consuming than regular MP. If you want to be successful, you need to think of more things than usually and you need to have a game plan involving both nations and pretender designs.

p.s. Also, someone may be counted as newbie only if he didn't win a single MP game AND he thinks he is a newbie.

Only 3 teams are still available and all are quite powerful.
And as we are in late era and are going to play on Alexander, we would probably like 18 nations more than 20 to avoid total overcrowding.

Cadel

ano
February 1st, 2009, 07:02 AM
The problem is that there're two team slots left and 3 players wanting to join. 20 players for Alexander is a bit too much and I already prepared the map for 18 players\9 teams. So you probably should team up with klagrok or AdmiralZhao.

JimMorrison

Just thought I should pop in again (you coulda PMed me :p) - I'm in 10 games atm, and trying to slim that down a bit..... If this was CBM you'd probably still tempt me, but you've sold it as a vanilla game, so I don't want you to keep hoping I will join it. <3

klagrok

Which ever one posts here first. Probably wont be able to check much longer as getting ready for SuperBowl. So if you see one post here, sign us up together. I prefer the moderate seperation scenario.

ano
February 1st, 2009, 01:10 PM
Ok, then I put you and Cadel together as Arco-Bogarus.
As for moderate positioning, it's a bit late because no one showed any interest in this setting before and I already prepared a map. I spent plenty of time to make it and I'm not going to remake unless someone has strong objections.

klagrok
February 1st, 2009, 01:16 PM
Ano, Gath and Midgard if you please--think you might have read my first choice before I edited it 5 minutes later....hopefully not too late.

ano
February 1st, 2009, 01:33 PM
Heh... I already uploaded the map to llamaserver)))
Seems like I'll have to upload another version. Ok, I think I'll ask llamabeast to remove old version (and maybe both because I can hardly imagine how someone can use them) a bit later.
I couldn't create game, btw. Seems like llamserver feels sick.

ano
February 1st, 2009, 02:29 PM
The game has been created at last. See link in the first post. Starting provinces for each nation can also be found. Some other minor modifications to the map include:
- provinces 19 and 25 changed from waste to farmland because people who start in these regions often have very little money due to endless wastelands
- province 207 given "Great Iron Mine" site to compensate Atlantis' poor resource starting loc (it has 3 land and 3 water neighbours).

Also, those who didn't tell which nation they are going to play for, please do it

klagrok
February 1st, 2009, 04:18 PM
Ano, I have multiple Alexander maps, but when I try to download this one, get an error.

ano
February 1st, 2009, 04:25 PM
Graphic file is untouched and you don't need to download any other than we used in Qwerty. All I changed is .map file which you don't need at all because it is stored at llamaserver. If you still need it, you may download it from llamserver map repository (it doesn't work atm)
Which error did you get? It works fine - I just tried it. I changed link in the first post to direct .zip file link.

AdmiralZhao is facing hard times looking for a reliable partner. Hope he will find one because we can't start with less than 9 teams due to predefined locs.

There's no need in that. He's asking his friends now and if he doesn't succeed he will start controlling both nations and will continue searching.

Zhao, I broke our NAP3 on turn 15, the turn after I noticed that you grabbed everything we were fighting for. And not only you ignored our previous treaties after that but now it is turn 18 and our lands are covered with your troops meaning you attacked on turn 17. I'm pretty sure I could beat you off but it is not a matter of discussion now. First post in the thread said that NAPs were to be honored but of course I couldn't force you, could I? Now I'll try to stay aside of any game you are in just not to run into all this filth again. I don't like public discussions, I just make conclusions.
Most probably, we would lose this war in the end (who knows, however) but I have no wish to continue this circus, sorry. Probably, I am too weak to see how all my plans are vanquished because someone violates NAPs.
Good to luck to everyone and especially to Zhao with his Machiavellian policy.

I hope you reconsider quitting Ano, it might have been an honest mistake on Zhao's part... I know I've accidentally attacked too early after giving warning on a NAP

ano
February 25th, 2009, 04:21 PM
Taking on account some of his previous deeds I strongly doubt it was a mistake. I gave a precondition (ultimatum) under which I would break the NAP, Zhao ignored and a turn after it I said our NAP is broken. It was turn 15. Zhao attacked on turn 17 and he may say, of course, that he thought something or anything else - I don't care. This turn I had 3 my provinces including capital overwhelmed by caelian forces, my ally Ulm was also attacked. But I may tell you for sure that I would easily beat the force he sent to my capital if it was next turn when I planned to set my chariots and mages to patrol. I expected air attack it but not this early.
Also, I understand that it is too late but I am almost sure that if it was not this way, I could beat all his huge mammoth army because I would have 12 mages able to skellspam, rage and terror, about 100 chariots, horde of archers and poison slingers and 3 smiters. Most probably, even now I am able to beat him but I don't want to check.
Enough said. Our decision is final because this game is no more a pleasure for us. I don't want to publicly blame Zhao - it was his choice. I just made my conclusions and you may or may not make yours.

AdmiralZhao
February 25th, 2009, 08:33 PM
Ahh, NAP arguments. Nothing more enjoyable than a good old fashioned NAP argument.

Here is what things look like from the other side of the front. On turn 14, Ano said that if we took any of Mictlan or Jomon's territory, or any of the independents near them, that our NAP would be automatically canceled. On that same turn I told them that we couldn't agree to those demands and that we were going to attack those provinces. I thought we were at war after that. However, even if you go from Ano's declaration of war, there is still a school of thought which say that 18 - 15 = 3. I am partial to that school of thought.

One thing I will agree with Ano about is that the war is far from over, especially as no one has yet suffered any real casualties. I was actually hoping to meet some resistance at his capital while my PoD still has the bonuses from his own dominion.

Additionally, I would note that I was actually attacked without warning on turn 17 by Gath (breaking the NAP3 we had with his team), so in Karmic terms I believe I am still ahead for this game. :)

I thought I would have time to play this game once my work rotation ended and my 5 week vaccation started. Unfortunary beeing on travelling foot it has been more of a chore, so I will be steeping out of this game. My apologies to my team partner.

High Inquisitor Pious of Marignon went into his private chambers. The prisoners were driven to heights of rage. Assassins were in place to kill those admirals who stood against him. Those loyal to him were ready, and soon command would be his. It was a beautiful plan, but not his.
He sat heavily in his chair, head in his hands, as ghostly figures gathered round him, whispering madness. They spoke of revenge, whispered of dreams.

Pious, your insane plan will never succeed. Caelum will put an end to your unholy magics and demon summoning. Look to Ulm, Abysia, and Pangea if you wish to know what your fate is.

...

Unless of course we are stopped by the treacherous attacks of Tien Chi. We should have known better than to trust a NAP made with those barbarian foreigners.

I gave warning on our teams NAP 3 turns ago...mind you I only sent warning to caelum as far as I remember though I thought that would do. ...wait you are caelum... I did send you warning on our teams NAP three turns ago right?

No, Seej and I haven't received any messages from you or Kortek. Though I understand your uncertainty; I've been wondering whether I accidentally sent my declaration of war to Tien Chi rather than to Atlantis & Marignon. Did you save your outgoing declaration of war?

If you want to make it up, perhaps one of you could go AI? Seej and I fight best against AI opponents. :)

It wasn't through the forums...I sent it in game through the message system (or thought I did) and even though you guys were quiet about it I figured it must have been received since caelum troops started building up on my borders...look at my handy notepad reminder!

"warning given to caelum turn 47
47 48 49
strike for turn 50"

So yeah...if you did not get an in game message on turn 47 then I'm sorry. I'm not going to do anything about it...but I am very sorry because I told Tien that I had given that warning for out team and he was good to go. I do ask that you recheck your turn 47 though...

Gah, I am quite sorry and it's completely my bad...I told Kortek that I had canceled the NAP. I was going to send you guys a message of the forums as well in case something like this happened but ended up deciding not to bother (clearly a poor choice).

Since we seem to be falling into world war and the game has reached turn 50, I would be willing to change the hosting interval to 72 hours if there is interest in that. If a couple people request the longer hosting in this thread, we'll go with it. Personally I'm still ok with 48

Man I love arssartuts. For some reason they always seem to be underestimated, but they're completely top of the line sacreds IMO, particularly when you consider their deployment mobility from being amphibious and sailing....plus partial darkvision along with mages who can cast darkness. If it's any consolation Gath is sharing the pain. Those guys just hit like a mac truck and don't go down.

Anyway, on to new business. I've been a bit surprised at the apparent lack of concern among most of the nations of the world at Caelum's amazing power concentration. Despite Atlantis' modest success at drawing some blood defending herself, overall Caelum is apparently the only nation not being ground down in the current fighting. For those of you who haven't figured it out yet, Caelum is using the ankh (and their ally) to transform many of their mages and priests into soulless. This has two benefits - 1) Their now undead priests can reanimate free longdead (you've no doubt noticed Caelum's army graph) 2) Their mages no longer have upkeep.

Just think about that for a moment. Caelum has nearly triple the size and income of the next largest nation *AND QUICKLY DISAPPEARING UPKEEP*. Now further realize that there is currently no significant offensive action against Caelum in the foreseeable future of the current fighting. By the time the current fighting resolves Caelum will have 5 times as much income as anyone else (after accounting for upkeep), 10 times as many mages, and 100 times as many troops.

This is not posturing, this is easily verifiable by just looking at the score graph. If the current fighting continues there is only one way this game will end, it's beyond doubt that everyone else is too evenly matched for a quick victory....it's going to be a long, drawn out war with lots of casualties on every side while Caelum's power grows exponentially. I propose an immediate ceasefire for everyone except Caelum and Pythium. Everyone is engaged in fighting now, and I expect there will be significant reluctance on every side to just leave borders where they are right now ("He just took that province!", "I've got an army about to attack!", "My stealth troops are just about to hamstring!", "He took out my ally...it's payback time!" "I just equipped a bunch of guys to teleport in") but realize that what I'm saying is the game is about to be effectively over and all that stuff doesn't matter unless you're willing to just say "screw it, I'm not playing for a win anymore". Realize there is no possible way other than "freeze everything as it is immediately" can be successfully negotiated by all. If your answer is "I'll stop fighting if I get..." then realize that your answer is really "no".

This is what Atlanis proposes, anyone else have a thought?

It is clear that Atlantis' thinking has been warped by too much time spent laying siege to Ryleh. Unless the aggressors return all captured provinces to Patala, Argatha, and Gath, and pay restitution for the immense damage their attacks have caused, then Atlantis is simply asking their opponents to wait patiently for their own turn at the guillotine. Once Caelum and Pythium are destroyed, Atlantis and Utgard will continue partitioning the other nations exactly where they left off. I would also point out that it is somewhat laughable for the owners of the Forge and The Chalice to claim that other nations will only get stronger over time. I know that I would want Atlantis' waves of Angok thugs or Utgard's endless Tartarians over my own legions of incompetent Longdeads.

Still no sign of admiralzhao, he was last active on the forums a week ago. I have delayed the game another 48hrs. The way I see it we have a few options...we can keep on delaying for a little while longer hoping the zhao shows up again or we hear something about his disappearance. We could try to find a sub/see if Pythium has any suggestions for a caelum sub.

The third option would be to call the game and declare caelum/pythium the winner. Before he started to stale, caelum had this game in the bag. Even now after a couple turns he still looks pretty good...but the way zhao was able to build up and come into his dominant position and somehow gain the support of gath and midgard...pretty much the end result of the game was sealed no matter how hard we fought. Now things have changed, many of caelums leaderless thugs/SC's are dead, and the Utgarde/Tien/Atlantis/Marignon pact is looking somewhat competitive...but it feels a bit unearned.

Throw some opinions out there.

Tired to seeing the long period of peace that seemed to be really benefiting caelum...and irritated after having my well of misery overwritten by Agartha, I contacted atlantis/marignon about banding together to go to war against either Caelum/Pythium who were the team with the clear lead...or against Agartha/Patala because Patala with maelstrom would be clamming like a demon which would eventually lead to lots of unique nation summons that are rather badass and Agartha with well of misery would also mean lots of national SC's and death summons of unpleasant disposition. Atlantis/Mari were up for going to war and they thought that agartha/patala would be a bigger late game threat so we went with that.

Tired to seeing the long period of peace ...

Still, you got to Patala, but never really caused any damage to me. And just stood around while Caelum/Pythium has a huge income and landmass under them? True, we might have been a formidable threat if we had gotten globals up sooner than later and Caelum had not been pretty much my ONLY neighbor. I had a small way of getting to midgÄrd and Gath, who were again allied with caelum/pythium, and Marignon, who again was allied with atlantis, and I had water provinces around my nation, so that would've made me an easy raiding target for them.

Hence, I'll vote for Caelum/Pythium to be the winning team. It's a shame to see Caelum start staling at this point of the game, but I've been pretty much of his victory for at least those 10 turns so far. No competitors have arisen for him. Only one who could probably turtle against him easily is Atlantis. I might stand a chance for a while until major battlefield magics (Shimmering fields, flame storms etc) would start pouring in. Or a horde of sc's (single ones I could defend quite easily against) come knocking my doors. I only have something like (with a bit of forging) 50-100 mages capable of casting disintegrate and maybe 10-15 capable of casting petrify, all scattered around my little splat of land admist of Caelum.
