Anyone interested in helping me do an AI for the shipset I'm making? It's my first shipset and I want to get it right.

Chewy027,
To post an attachment, you just click on the "Upload your Files" option just below your password entry in a post. You will then get a menu that allows you to enter the filename and path, or you can simply click on the Browse button (I usually do this). Once you have all of the filenames and paths entered, just click the "Upload Now" button.

With respect to an AI, what sort of racial traits were you considering? I may be able to assist.
Regards,
GE

About the AI: I see a race that is religous, has 125% defensiveness, hardy industrialists, and propulsion experts on 5k racial points.

They are a warrior race that has an aggressive demeanor but is a peaceful society. A race that expands quickly and defends well but only fights when it has to. It won't back down from a fight but won't start one either. Sound interesting?

Obviously whoever helps me or more realistically whoever i help design the AI with will collaborate with me on all the details of the race. The above dscription is what i envisioned but i am flexible.

Ok since i'm too stupid to figure out how to attach the ships if you are interested in helping me with the AI or even if you just want to see them leave a message here and i'll email em to you in a zip file. unless of course i'm to dumb to do figure that out too http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/confused.gif

Maybe the forum doesn't allow attachements in the regular forum anymore, try the mod forum.
(Just a guess.., it could still be possible to attach them here..)

1) Click "Upload your files"
2) Fill in username/Password
3) browse to desired files
4) click "upload files"
5) type message while waiting for the transfer.
6) wait until the upload manager goes to either a blank, white window, or a "successful upload" message
7) close upload manager window
8) click "submit reply"

Looks pretty good. I currently use the Norak style, but I'd switch to this one when its done.
You do need to clean up the masking at the edges a bit; looks like all those ships have their shields up http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif.

September 26th, 2001, 12:28 AM
thanks for the encouragement SJ. I have been using "paint" to touch up around the edges so i haven't been able to get them as clear as i would like. Do you or anyone else know of a better program for this?

Anything that supports separate layers of colour would do nicely, but on the cheap, you could just use paint (or whatever you used) and leave the background black, rather than cyan.
Save, then do a floodfill of colour in the background to find the non-pure-black spots you want to get rid of.

well i'm retouching up the ships and hopefully the shield effect will be gone i'll try to post the clearer ships tomorrow.

any takers on an AI?

I could probably work with you on the AI, if you'd like. I've got a couple of ideas that might work pretty well with what you are talking about.

hey sure Alpha sounds great. How bout emailing me with your ideas and we can talk about what we want to do.

OK looks like Alpha Kodiak will be the one helping me with the AI for this race. I'll continue to post the shipset as it comes along. Any criticsms or advice from anybody on the ships are welcome http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif

There are spelling mistakes with some of the file names.
Try using my HTML race viewer to check.

Nice. The race portrait looks hand drawn. Did you do it yourself?

the race portrait is a picture i've had laying around with some modifications i made to better "fit" the shipset. Is the masking any better?

Quick Question: Do you think I made the carriers leaning forward too much? I can't decide if they look alright or if I should straighten them out a little. Looking for some feedback.

Coolness. It's a good looking set of ships. Made them with DoGA CGA L2, yes? I need to turn more ship designers on to that program.

yes zircher thats exactly what i used. saw it in the how to make shipsets thread and decided to try it out. The Vandron are the result.

The only problem with that program is that you can't change the background to black. Its set to a turquoise color. So after i render each ship i have to change the background using paint. Thats why some of the ships look rough around the edges.

I think the carriers are fine. You could change the angle if you wanted but then you'd have to do the same with all of the other images.

chewy027,

It does not look like someones first shipset. Generally the ships look really good. the dreadnought looks like a dreadnought (didn't i see a sign on the side of it that says "don't mess with me").

Just downloaded them to see them with the style tester. Man, they look damn good. Can't wait to use them.

The only thing that I think is not 100% is the fact that the colony ship looks like it does not fit in with your other designs. Maybe too many bubbles? The other ships have ver sleek lines to them. Maybe you could design the colony ship like that, but make it more bulkier or boxier, not bubblier???

BTW, what program did you use?

Hey thanks for the compliments Kadste http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon10.gif Yeah the colony ship is a little different i guess i can play around with it. Thanks for the feedback.

I used a program called DoGA CGA L2. I saw it being discussed in the "How do you make a shipset" thread so i decided to give it a try and the Vandron are the result http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif

ok the latest: added fleet pick (is it to crowded), bases, alternate colony ship (tell me which you like better), and drone. I should have the transports finished tomorrow and maybe the troops too http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif then Alpha Kodiak and I will start full bLast on the AI !!

So has anyone else looked at the ships? What do you guys think? What needs to be changed or fixed?

I will post the finished but not necessarily final fleet in the races forum and open a Vandron Shipset thread.

madium?

- Units are a bit small. You can't see any cool details. The standard races use the single-unit portrait as an opportunity to show units up close.

- For unit Groups, they all seem to be the same distance away; varying the sizes a bit may help.

- You seem to be missing the fighter and "MassiveBaseShip" (A.K.A. Battlemoon or Deathstar http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif) pictures.
AFAIK, the Space Vikings (http://www.sandman43.fsnet.co.uk/viking.htm) are the only full shipset with a BattleMoon included.

Looks good

well don't i feel stupid http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon9.gif your absolutely right SJ i did forget to make the fighters.

I'll get right on it. And the troops are a little small i'll adjust that too.
