The vultures have gathered in the West. While their god's will is absent (OOC: I'm pretty sure they staled last turn, someone might want to look into that), the flesh of the Ermorians is offered up to their ravenous beaks.
The feast should be finished soon. And whither shall the hungry ones turn their attention next?
In the East, other tidings of war and bloodshed are heard, and rumors of mighty alliances.
So who will feel the dripping blade of fate next? Well, know that the Children of the Forests, and their great goddess, the terrible Queen Pony, Mistress of the Wood, will not go into the Long Night easily. We have the means to defend ourselves well, even if we must stand alone against many. And verily, we might be destroyed, but we swear to extract such a toll that the living will envy the dead!
Would it not be better to court us than to clash with us? If you woo the Dark Lady, you will find her a most useful ally, and the dwellers in the trees have many resources that a true friend would find useful. Who will prove a worthy consort to the Mistress of Terror? We await your reply through the usual lines of communication...
Sincerely, Pangaea

I have to report a quite serious problem. Today at about 14:00 of my timezone(which I think is GMT+1) I sent my turn as usual, and I honestly didn't check wether it was received or not, as I never had any problems...until today. Upon downloading my new turn tonight, it told me that last turn I staled, and in fact I didn't find the llamaserver's confirmation email.
Now, I don't know what's the policy in these cases...while this won't be a total disaster for me, it sure is problematic; not to mention that the failed execution of this turn caused me diplomatic problems with other nations.

I know this sucks, but I can't roll a game back because of one player's staled turn. The only times I will do this is when there is a server problem that impacts everyone's turn. As for example, when Llamaserver crashes the game while processing and stales everyone, etc.
It is getting annoying how this keeps happening with Llamaserver though. I keep hearing people in other games and here complaining about the emails not getting received. Or turn files not being delivered.

Llama has been receiving my turns late as well. I advise sending in all turns 6 hours in advance. Maybe we can change our hosting time from 48 hours to 54 hours to give people a little cushion? Here's my thoughts on this (as posted already in the 'sub' request thread):
I had a scout watching the whole thing, for many turns - the Vanishag fought hard and honorably, to the bitter end. While it seems a bit odd to have a (now) former player sub, especially for the guy who beat him, I think the Vanishag can be trusted to play fair while majuva68 is absent. Especially considering how hard it is to get a reliable sub for most games, I have no problem with this.

This is the end of the game for Sauromatia. We've held back Vanheim for over a dozen turns now, but our capital is now under siege and there are no more troops to break it. I blame myself for the defeat. I was not sufficiently focused on research in the early game. Nor did I shift my strategy towards Hydras fast enough for it to still make a difference. Live and learn. Good luck to all, though especially to the heirs of my gem fortune.

I'm willing to roll with it, but I don't see why. Did someone have a delay request that wasn't honored?
Weren't the Yomi & Arco stales from the last turn? With the rollback the staling data from the turn that got rolled back disappeared from llamaserver.

What the...someone actually ALREADY rolled back. Why did that happen??
Did we have many stales or something? And anyway...shouldn't we at least talk of that before doing it?
EDIT: Just to clarify,I thought that people were asking about rollbacking, not warning that a rollbacking already happened. I seriously hope we get an explanation for this.

Won't some turn files still be in people's sent mail? so just resend that file right? For people in battles, you'll be able to tell who changes things around on you.

DakaSha, if R'lyeh (and anyone else involved?) agree to submit the same orders, at least as far as the battles go, would that be fair? The RNG may still change the outcome, but it should be easy enough to tell if he changed orders.

My understanding is that the previous turns that were submitted at still on Llamaserver and you don't actually need to send a new turn UNLESS YOU STALED.
The reason I rolled the turn back was that I saw a couple people staled and it was probably because of my post that I wanted to do to a rollback because ... well, anyway, the point is that the way the rollback works only the people who staled the turn need to send in turns. So, if you sent in a turn for 39, its still sitting there on the server even though the game page claims it doesn't have it.
Overall, very unhappy time. I'm obviously lacking the spare time to properly admin the game these days and would be great if someone else could take over.

It would be nice if the server just used the previous turns. I'd like confirmation before I trusted it though.
And enough people have already sent in new turns that it doesn't remove concerns about taking advantage of info from the rolled back turn.
I'd be willing to take over as admin if you'd like.

Llamaserver gives you this explanation of the rollback:
Read this next bit carefully. I seem to be having difficulties explaining it coherently:
Note that once the game is rolled back, it will appear that the game is waiting for 2h files from all players. However, the 2h files from last time the turn was played will in fact be there, and will be used if the game hosts without them being overwritten. This can be useful; often, a game is rehosted in order for only one or two players to retake their turns, while everyone else is expected to make no changes. The game admin can therefore wait till just those players have submitted, and then force hosting. None of the other players will stale (assuming they actually submitted a 2h file last time the turn was played).
I hope all that makes sense!
I'm not sure if this is posted somewhere on Llamaserver or in his FAQ publically. Anyway, it shouldn't have happened, but it isn't reversible now.
And thanks for the offer to take over admin of the game. I'll PM you the admin password shortly ...

OK, I'm confused, as to what the heck is going on, and what to do about it. I got resent the rolled-back turn for 39 yesterday, and then got sent turn 40, which seemed to be just fine?!
But then we got rolled back to 39 again? Without getting send another .trn file this time?
Well, whatever, can someone just tell me what I need to do now? Send in my turn 40? Or go back and fine the .2h 39 file, if I still have it? Or find the rolled-back .trn 39 file (again, if I still have it), and redo my turn from that? Or not do anything, because the server has my previous turn, even though it's not showing it (that one got me  )?

I have been assured that the llamaserver does keep the old 2h files and will use them after a rollback. It just doesn't display them on the webpage.
So you should be able to just wait this out.
Most people had a copy of the 2h and re-sent it just to be sure.

If Arco sent in their turn, can we force host? That should eliminate some confusion and get the game caught up to speed.
But that leads to the Oceania problem. It appears that Daka is just done with this game completely which means that Oceania will stall until a sub is found. Should the game be halted until we find a sub?
For the record, I'd be willing to do whatever it takes to get Daka to remain (give him the province and the gear he got from his victorious fight if he loses inthe rollback). Of the replacement players, both will be the biggest countries surrounding me which is frustrating to have change relationships immediately.

The Oceania situation is currently the hold-up. Otherwise I'd force host it now.

As I said, I'll give Daka the gear and the province if he stays. This is a much better deal for him b/c he'll be able to use the gear a lot quicker than having his guys several provinces from a lab where he can actually make use of gear. B/c a Bishop Fish with combat gear isn't very useful...
If R'lyeh changed his turn that is a bigtime shame.
BTW: While I won my fight vs. Oceania, other elements of my turn went much worse. Things usually balance out although I'm sure some folks won and others were big time losers. And my offer of giving gear doesn't apply to any replacement!

Second, I'm outraged that foul Oceania would declare war on the world by flooding the coastal provinces. I hope folks will work together to banish such a loathsome nation that is reducing income for everyone. Who knows what other foul spells they'll cast?
Finally, is Vanheim doing as well as the hall of fame makes it look? They wiped out Sauro right? How many capitals do they have?
Stretch
August 31st, 2009, 02:03 PM
Thanks to Sil for putting up a good fight as Sauromantia. The reason that I have so many entries in the hall of fame is that thugs were the best way I had to combat hordes of androphrag archers hiding behind large quantities of PD. Vanheim national troops are both expensive and incredibly vulnerable to poison (and I didn't have arrow fend/storm yet). Thugs seemed to work pretty well, in that the slightest hitch in unit orders didn't lead to them getting poisoned to death or routing in a few turns, but I had to get to critical mass to make the final push to his cap. Once I was comfortably safe from poison, Sauromantia switched to skelspam, so I racked up kills banishing away hordes of skeletons, not to mention damage control from some really ill-timed barbarian uprisings.
I have not taken any non-Sauromantia province (and they weren't too big) and there are definitely other nations that you should be more worried about at this stage of the game. ;)
Also, Kailasa is AI? Did that happen recently? Are they almost dead?

Thx...couldn't remember if you also dismantled Agartha. It's a bit disconcerting to see the entire HOF either gods or Vanheim and wanted to some info from that part of the world!
Hmm..I guess Kailissa just went AI. They are down to 1 province that's been undersiege for many turns so they're trapped. Their capitol has been long since plundered by Abyssia.
So I think 4 capitols(kail, Sauro, ermor, Agartha) are gone and no nation has more than 2.

Oh god please not another rollback... I'll send gems to Pangaea if it means they'll accept a stale instead of rolling this game back again. Shall we take up a collection? Anything but another rollback!
I'll loan a dwarven hammer!

Hey, if people want to me with gifts so as Pangaea will suck up a stale for the team, I wont say no :D
But I'd like to know what the problem is that is happening, before going down that road. I mean, say I stale, and then get another corrupt turn file?
thejeff
September 2nd, 2009, 11:12 AM
I don't really have an answer for that. All I can do is hope.
There really isn't much we can do to diagnose the problem without llama, and I don't know when he's going to be back.
If it isn't a one-time corrupt turn we could still rollback to this or the previous turn if necessary. (I think llamaserver lets you go back more than one turn. Not sure about that though.)
TwoBits
September 2nd, 2009, 01:05 PM
Hm, I think if we did another rollback, especially a multi-turn rollback, a lot more people would be walking away from the game, and I don't want to be the cause of that.
Just kind of bad timing Llama seems to be out of town at the moment. So here's what I suggest: There's 5 other players who don't have their turns in yet. If they get their turns in, and Pangaea is the last to go and Llama still hasn't returned, go ahead and force the turn (and if other players feel generous and want to take pity on me by sending some gold/gems/items - and lets face it, staling at this point in the game really sucks :( - I would certainly appreciate it :D ).
But if after that, I get another corrupt turn file, I don't know what we'd do. Heck, without access to my turn, I couldn't even turn Pangaea AI! I'd be out of the game in effect, and there wouldn't even be an incompetent AI defending the place - it'd be a total free-for-all for all Pangaea's neighbors.
Has this ever happened to anyone else in an MP game before (to them or to another player)?
thejeff
September 2nd, 2009, 03:45 PM
Alright then, I wish I had a better solution, but I'm going to let this turn host on the current schedule and hope this problem goes away.
If it doesn't, then we're in trouble. We'll have to either put the game on hold to wait for llamabeast to get back and see if he can do anything, or continue with an ever-staling Pangaea.

Sent some gems/slaves/spare magic items to try and ease the hurt. Thanks for taking one for the team, Pangaea. I hope that some other nations who aren't actively at war with you will pitch in, because forced staling really sucks!
Edit: I also hope that anyone at war with Pangaea doesn't take advantage of the fact that he is definitely not moving troops this turn to get some cheap victories over his armies (not just a province or two, I'm talking about killing big armies/SCs/etc using the definite knowledge that they wouldn't move). I don't even know if he's at war with anyone, but I wanted to throw it out there. If someone did something like that (when he's taking a stale to avoid hurting the game) then it would hurt their reputation, and I would join others in making sure that their armies lived in fear of mass ritual castings from the other side of the world.

Ugh now something is wrong with my turn file. My pretender has mysteriously dissappeared, without any kind of assassination or seduction. Its an immobile one inside of a fortress, so this really can't be user error. Also about 6 commanders from my capital are also missing. So either Tir has 6 assassins who mysteriously don't generate combat reports on my end, or the game is messing up.
This game has been really frustrating these last few turns, as I can barely tell what is going on anymore with the roll backs and errors.
OH well I will persevere
Edit: My pretender shows up on the commander list in the army screen, but doesn't show up on the strategic map. I don't have hidden researchers on. Anyone think of any other settings I might need to change. My other commanders also show up on the army screen, but i can't give them orders.

September 3rd, 2009, 10:32 AM
Are you sure that they're not just hidden by a too-large number of commanders? In that case, there should be some really subtle arrows to the right of the commander screen on the strategic map that you can use to scroll up and down the list of commanders; they look like ^ and its upside-down variant. There's also a keyboard command you can use to scroll this list, hopefully someone else will remember what it is. Worst comes to worst, you should be able to find them in the F1 list and select/give orders there.

If you click on your Pretenders name on the User Interface (directly above where your gem stocks are displayed) the screen will immediately highlight and centre on your Pretender. A nice convenient way to always find your Pretender (if it's still on the map)

I know it sucks to stale, especially when you've actually done the turn, but after the fiasco of the last rollback I really hesitate to do one without a consensus or an actual game problem.
What do people think? There were a lot of stales.
On a related note, Helheim has staled 3 times in a row. I believe he's in bad enough shape there's no point in looking for a sub. If anyone who knows more of his situation thinks it's still viable, we can try. Otherwise, assuming nothing is heard from him, I'll set him AI before this turn hosts.
Hinnom has staled twice in a row, which according to the games initial rules is a forfeit. I know nothing of his situation. Should we be looking for a sub or setting him AI?
TwoBits
October 1st, 2009, 09:46 AM
Helheim's pretty much done from what I can see. Hinnom still seems fairly viable though, although their play has seemed very lackluster once they went to war (where are those uber-SCs?). A good sub could probably revive them.
I expect that with all the fighting going on that any rollback would cause plenty to scream bloody murder. I myself am ambivalent, although since I was the one who suffered the forced stale after the last one, I'm not eager to try my chances again.

Yeah, Hinnom was pretty boisterous at first but after a few setbacks has fallen silent for the last 2 turns (although I haven't taken any forts or made any huge advances in that time). I believe that a sub is in order. They still have various SCs and fun troops. I would vote against a rollback as it'd probably cause another round of stales and possibly another few people quitting.
I urge everyone to check llamaserver after sending in their turn to verify that it got it.

Hi everyone, Hinnom here.
Yes, in the last 2 weeks i had an ever-increasing amount of real life issues, and even when I had some free time, I couldn't get myself to play my Dominion turns, or I just played them passively. Sorry for waiting so long before saying this, I was hoping till the last that I could manage it.

We didn't have a delay last turn so it hosted when it said it would, but if anyone's expecting a delay this turn it might not actually kick in, so I recommend getting your turn in by the time it originally said on llamaserver (Saturday around 2200 GMT)!

Well, anyway I'm going out on vacation next week and I certainly for now won't have the motivation to play with a stale at the back of my mind going 'what if what if etc' so I'll be needing a sub as well.

We haven't yet been able to find subs for either Hinnom or T'ien Ch'i.
I don't think we should proceed without them, so I'm going to keep postponing the game while we keep looking.
Shard, how long are you going to be away for?
Amonchakad, any chance you could play a turn or two so we can limp along while we look for a sub? T'ien Ch'i played this turn, so we could at least run this one.
Helhiem I'll set AI before running this turn if he doesn't play.
I've heard rumors Mictlan is also in a bad way. If he stales again I'll do the same.
Abysia is also almost finished. I hesitate to set him AI, because I'm the one killing him.
Caelum staled last turn and hasn't played this turn yet, but seems to be doing quite well. Hopefully he's still around?

Oops.
I missed the deadline and let the turn host.
I think we can live with that. We were still hoping for a sub for Hinnom, but it isn't looking good.
I'm really not sure what to do at this point. A long delay could be fatal to the game, but I also don't think we should go ahead without a sub for T'ien Ch'i. He looked for one, with no success and is planning on returning.
Mictlan & Helheim will be set AI. Setting Hinnom AI will be a disruption and a gift to Vanheim, but I don't see what else to do.
Caelum also seems to have disappeared. He was a fairly major power, so that loss would be a big problem. I'll start looking for a sub for him as well. Hopefully, he'll just show up again.
At the moment, I don't see what to do except to wait for Shard to come back and hope for a TC sub in the meantime. And hope everyone doesn't forget about the game before then.
TwoBits

I can't believe there are no takers for Hinnom! They're sitting on a pile of giants just waiting to be set loose. It would suck to set them AI, but I figure do it if necessary - people would just have to reconfigure their diplomacy to factor in the new (un)balance.
And what's up with Caelum? I thought TheDemon was a solid vet player - strange to see him go AWOL. Maybe there's been some real-life event there?
In any event, I think finding permanent subs for those two positions would certainly be best (Mictlan and Helheim are pretty much done, so AI is fine for them I think), certainly more important than finding a temp sub for TC. I say, if necessary, wait until Shard comes back (this game has had so many delays, heck, what's another few days at this point - we're all playing other games anyway, right?), and use that time to push hard in finding subs for Hinnom and Caelum (unless TheDemon turns up).
Can anyone else recommend a sub for those two?

Anyway, just send tell me if you need them set to AI. I don't know what to say... I don't want an easy AI victory. Is there any way to just turn Hinnom's territories into dust so that no one can take them?
