How good is the solo play without the various mods?

Yes. It is a very good game without mods. Poeple play mods because they allow for greater depth and more races to choose from.
Base SEIV is an awsome game though.

I play solo without mods 90 percent of the time. It's still Great!

I have yet to play anything but a solo game without mods. At some point I'll try mods and/or PBW, but for now I'm having too much fun to branch out.

I only play the unmodded game! Sure, the mods are interesting and add different things, but the basic game is also excellent and there are many, many hours to be had, just exploring and mastering it. In fact, I would strongly argue that someone new to the game should play the unmodded Version for quite a while before jumping to a modded one. The game is that good.

Solo play, solo play...
I think it's been five months or more since I played a solo game. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif Playing with other people, the game is *superb* even without mods. I haven't had time to explore all the depth there; I suspect I'll never have time to explore most of the mods.
Solo, after the TDM Pack came out, I rarely played against the "standard" AI.

I play un-modded so far both sp and hot-seat with friends, the game gives you a good game especially if you set it up right, after learning the game. You can tinker with the various races and their traits as well as pick which ones you want in the game in addition to having comp pick additional races. Haven't tried mods yet but I plan to, Every time I get ready to download one, the modders are in process of making changes or a new patch comes out, just haven't been able to keep up with them, but I will eventually. enjoy the game
just some ideas mac

Same here. I always play unmodded. The AI is not that difficult after a year of practice, but human play is very nice.

I play mostly un-modded. I do add the system names file I created (this gives names to systems when you play a 255 game) and the event file I created which adds 30 events to the orginal 17 increasing the play factor by not always getting the same events.
Sometimes I use the TDM pack to get the added races.

Mostly Unmodded. A la PBW. Best way to play. But for solo I add in my Mount Mods, just so weapon platforms/sats etc are more useful. I also play with the TDM Modpack and many, many, many downloaded races (I think I have them all on my hard drive http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif.) Favorite races currently are Starwolf and the Regency, as well as a new one that Andres has in the works (not released yet, but damn beautiful!!)

My solo games are split about 50-50 between unmodded and modded; all my PBW games have been unmodded.
I've used the TDM-Modpack and some minor mods of my own. I haven't tried any of the major tech mods yet.

I've been playing solid P&N, but then again, I am developing the mod http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon10.gif
