View Full Version : Patch 1.49 Font Problem
Baron Grazic

Hi All.
I have just installed the patch, and now all text within the game is missing.
Win2000 Computer, All Regional options are set for English (Australia)
Installing the fonts into the C:\Winnt\fonts directory didn't help.
Renaming the SE IV fonts to .old made no difference either.
Any assistance would be appreciated, because if I can't get SE IV working, I'll half to do some work instead...

I also run a win2k system, but the new patch has NOT effected my game. Perhaps you should uninstall the game, and then reinstall it. Then update with the new patch. Best of luck.

Unable to uninstall/reinstall cause the CD is at home.
I think it is related to the new International Fonts that have been added.

Version 1.45:
4. Added - A new set of fonts by Andrés Lescano which add international character support to the existing fonts.

From one Baron to another, I think your problem is most likely related to the international non-US English character set. Try re-installing a previous patch or from scratch to get the original fonts. Then, save them to a ZIP file before installing the 1.49 patch. After you have 1.49 installed, unzip the old fonts (save the new ones if you want so you don't have to install a patch just to get them... http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif ) If it works with the old fonts, it's some incompatibility between your system and the fonts. Probably some quirk of the non-US English character set. If it still doesn't work with the old fonts that must genuinely be something in the program, though it might well be the non-US English character set in that case, too.

It's not really related to your specific problem, Baron, but I have noticed some off font behavior in 1.49, also.
When I was creating a new game, the box that contains the starting tech level was totally empty. Everything else appeared to work, though.
It is worth noting that it did crash when I tried to create a game. Upon restart, it all worked okay.

Following both Baron Munchausen and Aaron Hall's advice (see Aaron's email below) the problem has been fixed.

Try this and let us know if it fixes the problem:
1. Uninstall the game completely.
2. Install from the CD.
3. Copy all of the fonts out of the fonts directory to a separate
location.
4. Install the latest patch.
5. Copy the original fonts into the fonts directory overy the ones that
are there.
This should fix your problem!

So it is confirmed that the problem is related to the fonts I made.
I'll give it a second try and compile the fonts again asap.
Then I'll send them to you, Baron Grazic so you can test if the problem is fixed.

Oh Baron if you can post or send me by email those original fonts you'll save me the trouble of having to reaintall the game and all that.
It would help me do it faster.
I really hope I can solve this problem, and send them to Aaron to include in next patch I'd hate to have the international chars removed because of this incompatibility with some systems problem.

Never mind. I already recovered the original fonts from the CD.
Ok I re-made one of the fonts. Please test if it works on your system.
Instructions: back up the original font, replace with this one, restart your computer and run seiv.
If it runs ok then I’ll do the same in the other fonts. If it doesn't restore the backup and I'll have to self-destruct the fonts.
Thanks, Andrés

Hi Andrés.
Downloaded the font and all appeared aok.
I'll give the other fonts a try when ever you are ready.
Is there any other Australian players out there that have tried the patch?
Baron Grazic.

I am in Australia and was running Win2k with 1.49 patch, it worked fine.
I am now running 1.49 patch with XP pro, it works fine.

Ok I'll get the other fonts remade asap.
To test if it is really working try naming a ship something like Üçöáîñ
You should not see anything with the old small fonts, but see the name in the title fonts.
I don't think the bug is related with your regional options, but with some vague windows manage.

Speaking of fonts, Andres, the e in your name was appearing incorrectly for me earlier when I viewed this thread - but now it's fine! I have no idea what went on...

Ok here you have a new set of fonts to test.
I’m also including a the original, and the ones in v1.49 so you can test if the bug appears again. (I wouldn’t be surprise if the work ok now. Stranger things have happened)
And I made a list of names using symbols to test if they’re being displayed ok.
I also found that making a true type font based in a .FON font wasn’t as hard as I thought. Expect to see an SE4 button TTF soon.

No Kwok, I don't think it was the forum, it was most likely your system, probably you restarted it or unloaded (or loaded?) some freeing some memory and causing the fonts to be reloaded.

It's not appearing correctly now...wierd...would I have that problem even if I had 128Mb of RAM?

Just as a note.
The difference between this revised Version of the fonts and the ones included in v1.49:
In the 1.49 Version I took another font that included all chars, and copied in it all chars from the seiv fonts, then I edited the resting chars to fit.
Now I copied all of these additional characters into the seiv fonts. (6 fonts, approximately 128 extra chars each font, using a program that doesn’t support key shortcuts, means I had to click on the menu edit/copy edit/paste 768 times)

Dunno Kwok, what OS are you using? maybe upgrading your browser (Ms IE?) to latest Version can help.
I often visit pages in spanish an pages in english (my win98 and all regional setting are Spanish Argentina) and have very few times seen that kind of error.

The revised fonts are working perfectly.
I tried using the standard 1.49 fonts again, and I still couldn't see anything on my Win2K work PC. I'd blame the computer engineer who built the computer, but thats me.
Strangly enough my Win98 home Notebook works aok.
Thanks again Andrés and sorry for causing so much work.
