Greetings!

I thought I would post a little tidbit of my upcoming race that I'm creating.

Rukbat-Escort-1: A preview of the Rukbat Escort, approx 2x game portrait size.

Rukbat-Escort-2: The Rukbat Escort set to a space backdrop...

Rukbat-Portrait: A nice friendly Rukbat citizen (the infamous Captain Kwok himself!)

It's going to take some time to finish off the race, since I make texture maps and such for the images (so time consuming!), but I hope to have done sometime mid-November.

What do you think so far?

O-o-o! Cool!

Very nice looking - I love your pics!

Do you think it would be possible to retain the 3-D look for the small .bmp's as well? There are a lot of shipsets that have great portrait-size pics. But when it comes to the mini all that's is offered is dull top-down view that lacks any appeal. (This is all according to my taste of course). An when you play the game, the mini pics are those you look at most of the time...

I realize that on a small bitmap it's harder to produce a nice-looking 3-D ship. But I'm sure it can be done -- so here's the challenge! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Thanks for the compliment.

The 36x36 mini is too small for a 3D pic - it would even been harder to tell between the different ships than a top down picture. However, most of my ships should be easily differentiated from each other (size, shape, etc...), so it shouldn't be so hard to recognize them...

It would be nice if the top down pick was 64x64 pixels, then you'd be able to see more detail!

Nice looking pics. I have already seen Captain Kwok around here some time ago, haven't I?

That's true. Captain Kwok did make an appearance some time ago, but that was before he had any ships or any concept of the race he belonged to.

The return of the little Green Men. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif Looks great, when do you hope to have the race completed?

I hope to have it finished up sometime in November. I have midterms coming up shortly so that will hamper my progress.

What's interesting is that most custom-made races have bases and troops as 3-D style pictures, even in 36x36 mini size. The ships however are usually in the top-down view.

Are ships harder to do because they have to rotate to indicate direction, or because there are so many sizes, and all of them have to look different?

Both reasons are good enough for me. A lot of time, the mini ships look the same because no effort is put into making the ships different...
