Is there any advantage to putting two colony components on one ship? I saw the Shadows Alliance from the TDM-Modpack v2 do this, and it seems to be nothing more than a really expensive way to get 20kT more cargo space. But before I start complaining about that race's AI files having a bug, I wanted to be sure there's no advantage to be had.

Hi guys,
Yes it is a bug. Have been very busy at work recently so I havent had a chance to have a go at fixing it. I was given a few suggestions but I need a bit of time to myself to test them to see if they work ok. In the mean-time, the AI isnt affected much by the bug (if you are playing with AI bonuses in effect) so its not a show stopper - just an oddity.

Well... it depends. If they wer both the same (i 2x Rock Colony) then yes, that is completely useless. Many modded AIs are guilty of this.
If thy were diferent (ie 1x Rock, 1x Gas) then it just makes the ship a little more flexible, bcause (obviously) it can colonise more than one type of planet - so if it's en-route to a planet which gets colonised by another race, for example, it's easier for the AI to re-assign the ship. A multifunction coloniser reduces the need for planning (something the AI isn't particularly good at)

Yes Mysterial, this is a bug. Something about it was reported under the TDM 2.0 Beta topic.
