View Full Version : Llamaserver troubles

Llamabeast,

Since I am not sure if you have not had a chance to read my PMs, or if your box might be full, I am reposting here. Our game, DawnoftheMorning (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=DawnOfTheMorning) is unplayable right now.

Originally the turn spontaneously went back to turn 47 after turn 48 had already hosted. There was no notification, and a replacement turn file was not sent out.

We decided to try to move on ahead. Everyone resubmitted their turn 47 .2h files. It processed. Everyone received a turn 49 where everyone staled, and llamaserver.net only shows turn 48. Llamaserver rejects new turns as well. It seems that the server that proceses the incoming turn files and the dom3 host are no longer in sync. What can we do?

I'm sorry not to have answered your PMs wonderloss, I have been away a lot and my personal life is in upheaval at the moment. Thanks for your patience.

This should be easy to fix - I will try to do it this evening.

There seems to be a lot of personal upheaval going around. I know I have seen my fair share lately.

Thanks for all your work with the server.

The Chosen Ones isn't updating. We had it on a 1 week delay and are nearing the end of that week. It hasnt updated in 14 hours even though at least one of the remaining players has sent a turn in. Not sure if this is an issue for other games as well.

No llamaserver games are updating. I am sure llamabeast is aware and will fix it whenever he has the opportunity.

Well, he came here several times since the server is down.
So i guess the problem is worse than the usual ISP issue, or he didn't watch his PM and so he s not aware of the problem.

I hope he will keep us posted.

Oh dear.

At the risk of breaking rules of internet forwardness, I am currently at home with my mother since my stepfather passed away after a short illness on Friday. Apparently the server back at my house in Cambridge has turned itself off and won't turn on. I guess hopefully I will get a chance to look at it in the next few days.

An odd side effect of all this is that I am about to release CB1.9 - I have been polishing it over the last few days to take my mind off things. Not a lot else to do.

Llamaserver seems to be having issues again. I've read in a few places of people having issues but the one piece of concrete proof of misbehavior I have is that MorlaLAnoob (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=MorlaLAnoob) is set to autohost, has received turn files from all the players but hasn't hosted the game yet.

I'm guessing Llamaserver is having troubles again. None of the four games I'm in have updated since around noon today. I sent in my turn for one of them, twice, and have had no response and still show as "Waiting for 2h file".

The Wetfeet10 game is still stuck at trying to start. We have 11 players all with pretenders uploaded, and the auto-start set to on (have also tried to force start the game a number of times), but still getting no luck. Has been in this state for 2 or 3 days now.

It seems that Llamaserver is changing hosting schedule on it's own. Game called Dreams of Ghatanothoa was supposed to be hosted 17:19 GMT today. I looked at the game page and the hosting was changed to 05:11 GMT on Tuesday.

I decided to force host just to keep the pace but nothing seems to happen. Any ideas?

I ve got a weird bug, in one of my game, where i m playing LA Ermor, all my troops are gone, i have nothing left not even a ghoul or a zombie. But in the end of turn reports i have some actions of my troops (fight, spy ...)

I downloaded the turn 2 times + a 3rd time after asking for a resend, but nothing has changed.

Did any1 have met this problem before ?

llamabeast
October 11th, 2011, 10:58 AM
Not a server problem. Either:

1) A previously unreported dom3 bug, or

2) You have suffered a dominion defeat (no friendly candles left).

Wow thx for this quick answer

1) Maybe
2) No i have lot of territories with a quite strong dom. Btw i can still play, i m not dead.

I think Llamaserver is having troubles again. MorlaMAnoob (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=MorlaMAnoob) has received a turn from every player but hasn't posted yet. And none of my other games have posted, or look to have updated since this morning, which has only ever happened when Llamaserver was having trouble. Also the PointySticks game seems deeply confused (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=PointySticks) about when it should host saying "Next turn due: nation_84::Ulm ".

Anyone else having problems?

MaliciousMushroomsv2 is having the same issues as MorlaMAnoob - all turns are in, but it isn't hosting and I can't force it to host either (requested, but thus far ignored).

YARG3 has strange status. On the one hand all the turns are in (# 24), yet OtoH game has not hosted and says: "Next turn due: 12:19 GMT on Saturday October 22nd ".

There has been some problems with Llamaserver today.

1. Game, DreamsOfGhatanothoa's hosting was postponed automatically by 8 hours.
2. Player's turn was updated to the server only after two hours.
3. Force hosting command works unusually slow.

Thanks again for running this awesome server!

ShatnerMA (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=ShatnerMA) sent out turn 7 this morning (as was expected). Unfortunately, it currently says it is in turn 6 and won't accept the turn files that are being submitted to it.

Nope, still didn't work. Hopefully Valerius gets my message in the thread, something is screwy.

OK my last turn submitted successfully, it just didn't reflect on the server. Something still seems to be wrong, though, as it claims our next turn is due in a few hours.

Hopefully I fixed everything last night. Let me know if I didn't (although I may be unable to do anything till Sunday night as I'm going away with my family).

I've discovered that recently if I don't reboot the server every week or two then it goes slowly mad. I think it's because of a memory leak in Minecraft (the llamaserver is also a minecraft server of late).

shatner
November 16th, 2011, 10:38 PM
When I email my turn file into Llamaserver I am getting my usual "turn received" email as well as another email containing the following:

subject Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender
mailed-by gator543.hostgator.com

...

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: llamaturns3@gmail.com
(ultimately generated from turns@llamaserver.net)

...

The email account that you tried to reach is over quota.

This happens every time I submit a turn (regardless of whether it's a revision turn or not), regardless of which game I'm submitting to. The initial email as well as the Llamaserver site indicate that my turns are being received but I'm wanting to alert Llamabeast to the a possible problem as well as make sure that my turns are actually being received.

In ShatnerMA, one of my players is unable to have his turn received by Llamaserver as part of the email issues. I've gone to my game's llamaserver page and verified that his turn hasn't gone through. This escalates this issue from weird to genuinely game-disrupting.

When I send my turn I get the following message:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

llamaturns3@gmail.com

I think we need to put a delay on the turn until llamaserver is ok again. I'll stall otherwise.

November 18th, 2011, 10:51 AM

We're having the same situation over in ShatnerMA and Immaculate002LateAgeNoobs. I'm the admin for the first game but I'm afraid to force the game to host after we've had two stalls caused by rollback issues and the server not accepting turns when they're sent in.

Maybe we should light up another Llama Signal

I strongly recommend to all MP game admins to postpone their game’s hosting until the problem is solved. Otherwise all the players will stale in case there is hosting.

A few of the players (though not everyone) in our game are also complaining that they aren't getting the turn, even on a resend request.

Any ideas what we (or i as the game admin) can do?

I kept trying every couple of hours. My turn eventually got sent.

If you are worried (or if your game is on a fast clock), it couldn't hurt to extend the hosting interval for a while.

Just to let you all know I've seen this and will look into it this evening.

Essentially all the problems are caused by my ISP (or perhaps their router) being rubbish. Maybe I should look into changing.

We seem to be all sorted out in our game now - I reset one players email address, and the other eventually got the turn after selecting the resend option.

Problems again.

We need a Dom3 server!!!
There are 5 servers that I know of. Altho LLamaServer is about the only one for menu-setup email-style games

If you mean an official server then it would likely be like the Goons Game Server which only makes it easy to sign up and check multiple games to see if they turned. It doesnt actually host any of the games.

Something odd happened in two of the games i am playind and also i am the admin. I postponed hosting and the server shows the new time when the turn will host but it really didn´t work. I staled in both games.

The games are MorlaEAnoob and MorlaMAnoob.

December 15th, 2011, 07:13 PM
I extended MorlaMAnoob 24h but the timer didn´t change.

-Next turn due: 05:35 GMT on Saturday December 17th, instead of
05:35 GMT on Sunday December 18th. And if you see the admin log the extension was made.

Aaargh, really? I am fairly sure that it will work if you try it again. Sorry though. I think this is where the internet connection cuts out partway through the postponing process, but I should look into it and see if I can prevent that happening. Seems you have been pretty unlucky with your postponings!

I think i have a bug in this game :
http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=TheChosenOnes

I m supposed to submit turn 68 and he his asking me for turn 69.
I had already sent my turn 68 while the server wasn't responding but after an hour or two i had a confirmation by mail that my turn was received.
The server was updating again but was still waiting for my turn. So i resubmited the turn and now i receive a mail telling me that the serv is waiting for a turn 69 and not 68.

I'm in a similar situation... my game has returned to the listing of games, and the server seems to have "hosted" the turn, but no new .trn file has come. I don't think my orders were lost, but something is clearly wrong.

Bullock
December 19th, 2011, 03:56 PM
Ok so in my case the turn 68 was indeed done.
but the llamapage still show the deadline of turn 68 and doesn't seems to have updated the turn status of each players (he is still only waiting for my turn).

I don't think it s browser cache issue since the turn number is correctly stated (t69).

Anyway i will play and submit my turn and see what happens.

I finally found the bug which has been causing games to pause a lot, and fixed it. Sorry about all the pausing.

The server postpones hosting when it knows it's not working well, so probably that would explain your changed hosting times. Also there have been a number of pauses recently (because of the aforementioned bug), and when they end all the games host at once and so their hosting times tend to coincide.

Apologies again for the unreasonably high incidence of issues recently. When I coded the llamaserver I had a much better internet connection (a university one) so it's not yet super robust against the appalling shoddiness which is Virgin Media's home broadband. We're getting there though.

Just reporting two issues I've noticed:
a. Server doesn't seem to be sending turn files reliably. My last two turns I got after asking for resend.

b. Last .2h file I sent it took the server near 16h to send the "Turn received for ..." and it still doesn't list my nation as "2h file received".

Llama is doing a great service and I don't have enough words to thank him.
However recently the server's spells of no service are becoming increasingly annoying. Enough so that I'm seriously considering manually hosting the next game I admin.
I wish shrapnel would pay llama and give him all the equipment and infrastructure he needs so we have a more robust server.

+1, it really is a great service that he's providing.

Just a quick question for Llama, how averse are you to sharing the code you've used for the Llamaserver?

There's got to be someone out there that might be able to dedicate more time to keeping a server up, or someone willing to spend the time migrating the entire thing to a more robust solution.

More robust solution seems like the best option. Given the heavy use of the Llama server, doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility for the entire Dom3 community could come up with the couple hundred bucks to get a dedicated amazon web services server instance.

Not sure what sort of computing power the Llamaserver currently has, but I'm guessing it's just an old CPU in Llamas basement. We could easily get the same performance in something that wouldn't shut off every other week for about $350.

I'm definitely do not have either the savy to pull this off or the time to teach myself how, but I'd certainly be willing to contribute some money towards the cause.

Agreed with everyone who has previously thanked Llama. Voluntarily hosting the server that has allowed us all to play Dominions together for years is an effort that goes beyond mere thanks, and I can't express enough gratitude for his efforts.

I'm with Torgon in that I don't have any technical savvy that would be required to host a more robust Dominions infrastructure, but I would be willing to contribute financially to such an effort.

Sorry about the downtime guys.

The problem this time was that the fuse flipped when my housemate turned the toaster on, so it turned the server off, and I didn't notice that it had gone off for more than 24 hours till Bullock PMed me. You see it emails me when it has problems, but it can't email me when it's off. So it's always appreciated when people let me know if there are problems.

I will think about how I can improve robustness. I really appreciate the offers of financial help, however that's not really the problem. Every time it goes down it is for some random reason (like this one). I guess maybe a hosted solution would be good, so that it wouldn't suffer from internet/power outages. But I think perhaps it might be quite expensive? I don't really know how such things work - anyone have any experience? All I'd really need is ssh access to a linux box.

The hosted solution actually isn't that expensive. The $350 I was quoting was the actual rate for a small (default size) medium utilization instance from AWS for three years, so around $115 a year. Like I said, I'm not sure what kind of hardware the Llamaserver's currently running on, but here are the specs for the virtual machine on Amazon's servers:

Small Instance (Default) 1.7 GB of memory, 1 EC2 Compute Unit (1 virtual core with 1 EC2 Compute Unit), 160 GB of local instance storage, 32-bit platform

Works out to about $115 a year. + Run time fees of $.03 per hour. Set it up to run a few hours a day (3) to process turns for an even $150 a year. Obviously, it would be a lot for one person to pony up. But given the number of people who use it, I'm sure we could drum up some interest. Heck, I'd throw in $50 right now if we got enough to set it up from other people.

revenant2
February 26th, 2012, 08:11 PM
I'd be willing to contribute $50 as well.

I also have quite a bit of experience managing barely supportable applications in an IT environment, so if you need help setting any of this stuff up or managing it, I'd be willing to help.

The DNS service had expired, and since it's five years(!) since I set it up they had the wrong email address for me. Took me a while to remember anything about it in fact. Anyway, it's working again now. Apparently it can take 24-48 hours for the restored DNS to "propagate" but it's already working for me - let me know if it's not for you.

Greetings good people, and you, oh charitable Llamabeast.

A visitor from Bay12 I am, where a tradition of dominions 3 games continues to prosper nurtured by yours truly, among others.
Some three years and seven games it has been, all this time our small community enjoyed the welcoming embrace of llamaserver, whose readiness to host our games and reliability allowed us to enjoy the game to the fullest. It is only fair to heap praise at the feet of Llama for providing such service.

Today, however, I have to ask for a more direct intervention from the gracious woolly camelid, for our latest game Bay12Round7andaHalf (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=Bay12Round7andaHalf) encountered the same kind of problem as the one described in the first post of this thread.

That is, after an ill-advised rollback(after all this time I should've learned not to do them anymore, alas) the server expects turn 47 files, while sending out turn 46s.
We are wary of allowing the game to stall in the hope of it fixing itself, as it seems probable that the problem will carry over to the next turn.

Llamabeast, I hate to bother you with this, the more so being a stranger to these forums, but if you could sacrifice a bit of your precious time to have a look at that, we'd all be (even more) grateful.

Humbly, Il Palazzo.
