View Full Version : MP I Need More Power! - yet another MA newbie game - Finished (Ulm won by agreement)
Lung Drago
August 26th, 2011, 12:43 PM
Greetings. I lurked these forums for a little while anxiously awaiting a PBEM newbie game I could actually join to, yet my patience went dry. So, I jump the gun first!
Up to this point, I played only SP and I hardly can be considered a good or experienced player as I got my entrails spilled out of me by AI several times not so long ago. Does not matter to me, though. Also note that is still one of my fresh games with the CBM mod. Only my last 2 SP games were with CBM and I am still discovering the various changes.
Anyways, this IS A NEWBIE game. I am not going to set some "played game limit" as it looks silly to me, but please do think over if your level of skill will make the game enjoyable for you as well as for example, me (:angel)
Mods:
CBM 1.84
hosted on llamaserver (completely no experience with this either, hopefully I wont commit a sin)
The game is over - Ulm won by diplomatic agreement :) Congratulations to Mightypeon!
Link to the map -> Plane of Rusty Nails v4 (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=45271) - v4 is at the bottom of the thread
Number of players: 11 - final number
Map: will be based on number of players gathered
Era: Middle Age
Strength of Indies: 7
HoF: 15
renaming on
Graphs on
Picked nations
Research: Normal
Gold multiplier: 125
Resources multiplier: 125
Supply multiplier: 125
Diplomacy: Encouraged! Machiavellian type, but with a 3 turn warning before breaking a NAP treaty. All nations are to be hostile to each other at the start of the game.
Turn frequency: I'll follow the general standard here, start fast (36h) and gradually grow slower as the micromanagement rises
Last, but not least: as this is a newbie game I optimistically do not expect to meet problems regarding using of exploits that I stumbled upon reading on these forums. But just for the record, I dislike such behavior. Stay fair, people. If you cannot swallow a defeat, then you will be a newbie forever. In spirit of my previous sentence, please do not go AI after a single major battle lost :)
Looking forward to an enjoyable game!

I think I've played about 8 MP games, so I'm not a complete n00b but I'm still pretty green (not to mention inept).
If you think its appropriate, I'd like to give MA Ermor a shot (or, failing that MA Jotunheim).
(I am, however, reasonably comfortable with how the llamaserver works, so if you need any tips I am very happy to help, whether I am playing or not.)

Well as I said earlier I do not believe that skill of a player can be measured simply by played games (real-life experience :D). It's ok. Thanks for your offer of help, I will certainly keep that in mind!

Since players began to pour in (which I am happy to see) I think it is ok for us to slowly begin deciding on which map do we want to play on :) I kinda like how the map "Urapparand" looks, what do you guys think? Also Shahrivar or Cradle of Dominion look good to me.

With respect to map choice, I like the idea of a wraparound map, but Urraparand is fairly linear (check it out, it's a thin snake working itself around the world). Is there another reasonably sized one with a better shape? The Desert Eye is shaped well but probably too small, and Orania is huge.
Also, can we leave score graphs on, so I can see who's most dangerous and attack him first?

With the way new players are coming in, I think Orania could pretty well be a valid choice. A solid one at that.
Another possibility would be Riverlands (V1.2). I'll propably start a poll in the near future regarding the map now that we have some names to work with.
And graphs are going to be on. It reduces the need of scouting somewhat, and I do not expect many players here to scout that good with the way I scout badly.

I would like to suggest Plain of Rusty Nails v4. Advantages:
- it is a wraparound map, as requested, which prevents the weird dynamics that can happen if someone gets a corner to themselves
- Calahan has made it a personal crusade to correct the game, and by v4 it is a safe bet that it has few if any bugs left
- fixed starts, so no-one should start in a truly awful situation
I got stomped on this map playing T'ien C'hi, and can vouch that it is a good map to play on :-)
It does however have a limit of 10 land plus 1 sea. At the moment we've got 8 land plus 1 sea, so if we go with this map we could take two more players and then we'd be full.
Edit: Sorry, forgot the link to the map. It can be found here (v4 at the bottom of the thread):
Plane of Rusty Nails (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=45271)
It is already up on the llamaserver (with v1, 2, and 3 ...)

How many provinces per player are we looking for? 10? 15? 20? We're going to need a lot more players for Orania. But I think we are going to wind up with more than Rusty Nails can accomodate.

Personally I like big maps (20 provs) Counting 10 players, Orania comes out with 28 provinces per player (...big!) while Rusty Nails comes out with 15.5 provinces per player. RN really dwindles in size if more players come in. It is perhaps a good map for our current state, but not if we get more players in.
A bigger alternative would be Riverlands (with 24.5) that scales itself nicely up to 14 players and anything bigger than that is Orania.
Nah, I am going to set up the poll now ^^
edit: OK, voting is up. Let us see on exactly how big maps we will settle :)

"Diplomacy: Encouraged! Machiavellian type, with a 3 turn warning before attack"
Could you clarify this? Does this mean that NAP-3 agreements we make must be honored? Or does that mean that I have to declare war 3 turns in advance against anyone I meet, even if we have no other diplomatic agreements?

The first option. None treaties are considered unbreakable apart from NAP, breaking a NAP has to come with a 3 turn warning. All nations start at war at the start of the game. Hmm, maybe I could rephrase that in the original post.

Where can I find Riverlands? Rusty Nails is fine too if we've run out of interested players.

I found here a "fixed" version of riverlands (called crown5). Sounds like it'd be a better choice.
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=45414
What's the main goal of the revision?
To fix tons of phantom provinces and lacking connections I was too lazy to fix before chrispedersen did. This makes the map actually fine and playable, and while it's too big for the MP games I regularily play, I do appriciate it so that I don't have to think about fixing it anymore ;)

The plain of rusty nails is looking pretty likely (assuming no late upsets in the polling!) - that would let us take in one more player (land nation), and then kick off.
When do you plan to make the call either way, Lung Drago?
BTW, I like the formal need to break NAPs, it will add a different flavour to the game which is always nice.

You're right. I think I will set up the game on llamaserver now so we can send our pretenders in. In the meantime, we can accept one more player.

Wow thanks! I am happy that this is being accepted. I thought this little rule will help us react to attacks and minimize undefended 10+provinces-at-the-same-time invasions :)))

Friday 2nd September? I should be able to start the game any day (I turned auto-start off to make sure that all pretenders received are correct) so we can start as soon as all gods are in.
And yes, I will enable quickhost. The way I understood the llamaserver, it can be set in such a way that it quickhosts when all turns are received and also hosts after a set time (which will be 36h at first, I do get the impression that some of you must be from the other side of the globe given the time of replies).
Reminder: Make sure you are creating your pretender with CBM 1.84 turned on.

Just a quick warning on a pitfall to avoid, BewareTheBarnacleGoose. When you create your pretender, you will need to make certain that you have the CBM 1.84 mod both installed and enabled.
You can see the mods you have enabled in the top right of the Dom3 screen when you first open the game. Make sure than CBM 1.84, and ONLY that mod is enabled before you create your pretender.
If you get the mods wrong, when the game starts you will get an error message from Dom3 on turn 1 basically stating that you have cheated and that your pretender has been "adjusted" (= totally nerfed).
Its not too big a deal for Lung Drago to unstart the game and let you resubmit your pretender (the other pretenders stay submitted, from memory), but best avoided if possible.
Once your pretender is done, you can find them in the NewLords folder under saved games (they'll be named after your nation - use the date stamp to find the one you just created). Create an email, attach your pretender, and then send the email as follows:
* address to send email to: pretenders@llamaserver.net
* email subject: INeedMorePower
Hope that all helps - otherwise, keep asking until you get what you need :-)

jimbojones1971

On Windows XP my file path is as follows:
C:\Program Files\dominions3\savedgames\newlords
And the pretender (in the newlords folder) will be called something like "mid_ermor_0.2h".
I'll post what it is from my Vista machine (think that Win 7 is the same) later on.
Lung Drago
September 1st, 2011, 04:40 AM
Yes, Vista and 7 will propably have permission issues if you installed the game to Program Files. The "real" savedgames folder that is used by the game could be located somewhere either in
C:\Users\[your user account name]\Documents\My Games
or
C:\Users\[your user account name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\dominions3
Note that AppData folder is most likely a hidden folder, so you need to turn "Show hidden files and folders" on through View tab in Tools -> Folder Options, accessible by pressing Left Alt in Windows Explorer.
If you want to avoid having your OS use these strange paths, there are two options: either do not not install games in Program Files folder on Vista/7 or explicitly start every game as an Administrator.

Given that Ermor's policy is to liberate the Proletariat from the drudge of every day toil by setting them on fire, then stabbing them repeatedly and finally raising them as undead minions to serve in the legions, I can only hope that we will have a happy and meaningful diplomatic relationship going forward Ms Luxemburg!

Dear Esmeralda, the world is known to flow as a river, in it's set direction, at it's own pace. Life comes in and out of our world in it's own natural way. It isn't wise from a man or god alike to be fighting the flow. Unlife is only an illusion of life and it is a serious imbalance in universe. On the game's page (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=INeedMorePower) is a link called Request turn resend. Just pick your country and the server will re-send the turn file to it's saved email address.
3 nations have staled. I can roll the game back one turn, though - and I will propably do it, as I continue to think about it. I hope everyone is OK with the delay, but 3 staling nations could have rather big effect later and I like to keep things fair, for everyone.

OK, the game should be at turn 5 again. To put it bluntly, I am an idiot and I rolled the game twice :D I am up for like 30 hours straight and it's obvious I'm tired and need some sleep :( Iam sorry I spammed your mailboxes due to my mistake. Doh. The turn 5 2h files (thankfully turn 4's as well which allowed me to get back to 5 :D) are still on the server, so actually the only ones that -need- to send their 2h files are those staling nations. If you actually want to change anything about turn 5, which you have a generous opportunity to do, make sure you delete your current 2h file beforehand. It is a 2h from turn 6 and it will conflict with .trn file of turn 5. I will however force-host once those 3 turns of staling nations are in (if I am not asleep :D) to make it all quicker, so make your changes, if any, in time.
P.S: By the time im posting this, turn 5 didnt get automatically sent to me yet even though it was force-hosted. It seems that sending is broken for that turn completely. Either ask for resend or just use the one from when I was rolling back, they should be identical.
Oh something also ocurred to me just now: I hereby honorably declare I didn't change anything to my turn 4 file and that roll back was completely by my mistake. I literally rolled back, minute after forgot about it, and rolled it back again. Yes I know, I need some rest.

OK, from what I can tell turn four was reprocessed.
If this is the case, then the outcomes for turn five will be subtly different, so everyone will need to re-do turn five to avoid all sorts of awesome and interesting consequences.
Roll backs are tricky at the best of times Lung Drago, I assure you that you are not the first person to have this issue! Under the circumstances, I think you were right to do the rollback.
Keep in mind that you can request a turn resend for anyone, so if you don't think that the turn has gone out correctly it is probably worth just doing one for every nation.

Oh my god, you're right. See, it didn't come to me yesterday at all! Due to my mistake, this turn 5 is most likely different, no matter if orders were changed or not. Hopefully it would be only minor differences like losing more/fewer men in battles than before, but I agree everyone should send their turns again just to be on the safe side of things.
Most already did, so good job there :)

I think I remember myself saving old .trn files to sort of cheat in SP. But I also think it was awfully hard to persuade Dominions into a better outcome. At best, I could lose a battle with fewer losses, but could not pull off a victory without changing the scripting and formations. Due to that, I believe the new, different turn 5 shouldn't be too much of an issue to anyone. Thankfully.
So, please send your turn 5 files again, and make sure you do not have your turn 6 .2h file when loading turn 5.
I again apologize for causing this slowdown  Hopefully we can continue from now on without any issues at all.

Dear Araisa,
I have pondered your words, but alas the concept of the world being a river only reminds me of running water, which in turn triggers a Pavlovian urge to pee. While I concede it is hypothetically possible that a nation with such amazing cultural depth as T'ien C'hi could have a national philosophy based upon biological functions, I think it more likely that I am simply culturally unequipped to understand The Way - or that perhaps it is time for me to invest in a set of Depends Adult Nappy Pants, to deal with my obvious incontinence issues.
We of Ermor are simple folk. We are dedicated to the ultimate equality of all creatures, and have found that the penultimate expression of equality is found in death (or rather, undeath). After all, any two shambling zombies are much the same, irrespective off whether one was once a prince and the other a pauper.
Some feel that we seek to hurry death to bring this about, but nothing could be further from the truth. Death can afford to be patient, as eventually it comes to all. Our national philosophy is to enjoy life and its privileges while they last, for after you pass through the final veil, only mindless drudgery and the eternal equality of the grave await.
Best wishes, and hoping for a future filled with friendship and love,

Dear Esmeralda,
the revoultion vehemently disagrees with your reactionary reasoning.
While a situation of equality for all is desireable, even inevitable, we intend to use each Ulmish and allied citizen in a way that maximizes his use from himself and all others.
A general that died will become a Bane(lord), a dead mage a Shade, and dead soldiers will come back as Wights.
For us, using the concept of undeath merely means that Death is not the end to the most valuable and valiant agents of the revoultion. It is, as a matter of fact, enshrined in the consitution of the Peoples Republic of Ulm that one will only be permanently reanimated in a form that is more powerfull than the form one had at live.
Thus, the historical dialectic and its struggle for progress defeats even death!
Given that, at the moment, 85% of the Peoples Republics military personal wear a Black Steel Full Plate and a Black Halberd, reanimating our valiant warriors as Zombies is pretty much out.
We are currently looking forward to reanimating Karl Marx as a Mound Lord or Lich.

This might explain some bizarre behavior. If LLamaserver is using the corrected version of the mod, and we're all using the broken version, then our battle replays will show the knights chewing up everything in sight but on the main server the battle will run a bit more fair.
I'm going to check the zip file in that link and see what it does.

If I understood correctly we have 2 vacations foreseen, one from 1st to 7th October and the other one starting 12th, right? I won't object if everyone agrees that waiting these days out is OK, but since those vacations are spread out and we have only one player away at a time, I'd think a sub would be a better choice. I could ask a friend of mine to sub someone. He's also a raw rookie like the rest of us. In that case, it's wise to make sure he understands your goals and strategy. My point is that we would postpone total of 14 days for one player at a time.
I hope someone remembers to write a hymn for Ermor in the event that we too get horribly murdered!
Actually, in best case I would like to eventually "compose" a hymn of honor for every nation that loses the race for the ultimate power in this game. Even if I lose this game, I will continue to do so for the next nations. I think it's a nice way to say that you weren't useless or played "lolnubingly", instead you will receive a nice thank you for the game.
My only concern is that it will become rather tricky to do role-play wise for nations I haven't met yet. It's so unimaginative to help myself with the "rumors" thing each time. :cold: I also somewhat count on that I will actually read up someone got defeated here on the forum, as I might not catch that fact in game (my Byakugan does have a distance limit) :re:

As far as I understood the vacations wont be whole 7 days straight? Did the first guy say 3-5? And there will be a free-for-all wekk between them vacations so we can catch up pretty well after the first one... I would say lets wait if it really on takes up 5 days. (palying one turn just before taking of and one right after coming back doesnt sound that the delay would be intolerable).

And here were are,
Ulm News: Fair and Heavy
From the various wars:
Pangea vs. Marignon
After initial advances by Marignon, the Pangeans seem to have reversed their province losses. Pangean forces outnumber Maginons, but much of this will be due to Maenads. Comparing the slopes of both nations army graphs, it seems that this war is still quite undecided.
Ulm + Ermor + Ctiss vs. Shinuyama
The main Army of the Peoples Republic of Ulm has captured both Shinuyaman forts this turn. The Shinuyaman army is now attacking Ctiss, seeking to go out with a victory against the opportunistic Lizards, rather than a last stand against Ulms Wall of Black Steel and Severe Firepower. Ermor grabbed a couple of provinces and has for all intents and purposes ceased to fight Shinuyama. A lack of a Border with the Bakemono is most likely an explanation for this.
Abysia and Atlantis vs. Man + Ctis
Ctis took a province from Abysia, partly due to most of the Fire Kingdoms armies being preoccupied with Man, while Man has seemingly thrown Atlantis back into the sea.

Not all Masters have accepted the fate of Shinuyama yet and already another grim news of a tragedy struck the land. The humans of Marignon possessed remarkable zeal that resulted in such outstanding morale that even baffled the Imperial Generals. Marignon's faith in their god was unquestionable and their righteous zeal even gained the favor of Heavens itself, a feat that truly rivals the Empire. And yet, as we now learn, faith alone is not enough. However, I'd like to ensure that no one here will ever forget the example of loyalty and zealous determination that Marignon was, and therefore, I present to you:

@Momfreeek- that was a beautiful poem. "bumfoul Her Beautifulness's sweet embrace" is pure genius.
@mightypeon- There was actually only one communioned priest, but he did plentiful damage. The real destruction came when the hordes finally got close enough for "wither bones" (6AOE, and no resist!). Of course, since Im bad at estimating distances, I put my mages too far back, and they wasted lots of time and gems going off script. And I managed to microwave all of my slaves, but hey, it felt good to kill almost 800 enemies.

It was most effective - I am quite impressed by the carnage that you caused :-)
I shall take notes for future use.
Now that C'tis is still hanging in there, shall I try to rally up another sub for Abysia?

I had volunteered to sub for Atlantis; does Abysia need a sub too? At any rate, I think I can still manage to sub. Im still in negative upkeep, and running out of gems, so it's only a matter of time. That said, I would rather not sub for more than one person.

Sorry, my bad - it was Atlantis.
The only issue with you subbing for Atlantis is that you guys will get bitten by the Dom3 copy protection. If more than one nation shares the same licence key, it begins to do very nasty things to you.

I think the below is what happens (haven't seen it myself) - you certainly wouldn't want to have it happen to you!
"Q: My Dominions screen goes blank when I play, all I can see is the map, but none of the user interface components. How can I get it to work?
This means either one of two things:
1) Your Dominions installation has been corrupted. Reinstall the game, enter the product key that came with your manual and see what happens. If the problem persists, contact Shrapnel technical support. Do NOT ask around the forums.
2) If you do not have a manual with the product key and you have this problem, you are using a pirated version of Dominions and what you have just encountered is the copy protection. Contact Shrapnel to purchase a legal copy of Dominions 3. Reinstalling the game is not going to solve your problem."

Yes, only I can change the email address to which llamaserver passes turns. Also I have no way (or at least I did not found where it is) of knowing the current address the email is sent to, which means once I will want to set you back once you return, I will have to ask your email too (send a PM). That's exactly what slowed Spottygoose (damn, that nickname is contagious!) by one turn :cold:
Regarding the copy protection, I think as long as you do not send a C'tis and Atlantis turn at the same time (with the same product key) it shouldn't fire off. If you would do that, I think it would invalidate both turns and simply not do the orders (meaning a stale).
If Shinuyama is still around here, he's a candidate for a sub as well. By the way, I was quite amazed how long he actually survived (and his annoying raiding at south considerably contributed to C'tis's current bad position, I think). Talk about a successful final charge.

Actually, if 1 legit CD key is used twice in a game, what happens is that one of the turns wont get processed.
The dissappearing interface happens with wrong CD keys (happened with me because I mistyped it), and no amount of simultaneous playing will change wether your CD key is valid or not.
What you could do (even though I do not know if this is breaking forum rules), is to backup your key file, change 1 number of the cd key and play the other turn with the slightly different key while playing your turn with the correct one.
When I was playing with a CD key that had a single number error, the copy protection occured only rarely.

I've found a sub for Atlantis (Tzarin) - I'll PM his email address to you Lung Drago, then help him get the map and any mods so that he's good to play.

That all sounds pretty bad. Maybe it would be better if Jimbojones's friend subbed for Atlantis instead.

I've sent his details to Lung Drago, so hopefully that is all sorted.

Looking at the quantity of Tien Chi's armies about to stomp me, I probably won't need a sub for very long.
Lung Drago
October 12th, 2011, 07:55 AM
I changed the email address and requested a resend so that the sub can see the situation (even though krpeters sent his turn). The map and mods and such are sorted, I take it?

It seems Pangaea is going to stall? Postpone for 12H or something?

Too late. Maybe his spirit was shattered on the strong gates and high walls of Marignon?
Lung Drago

Pangaea, Y U NO send turn?
But seriously, I can't exactly do anything about someone who is about to stall during that particular time of a work day :( At least the current turn is more time manageable for me, so I will act if it was to repeat :)
Marignon seems dug in with it's pretender and summons at it's capital. But hey, fighting those Fall Bears during a fall is of course not the brightest thing around so Pangaea might aswell be making a wise stall
But all this will become meaningless instantly if C'tis actually pushes his enemies back. Has anyone seen my jaw? At this rate, even if he fails I will be thinking about using soundtrack from 300:Battle of Thermopylae as a departure music

Lol, thanks Lung Drago. I'll try to have a last stand worthy of a spartan send-off!

Any1 got an idea where Pangaea dissapeared?
My scouts infiltrating Marignon's last line of defence tell me Marignon's troops have been able to throw Pangaea out twice already, but ofcourse they dont stand a chance in long run anyways, so could it be possible Pangaea got demoralized or lost his temper?

I hope morale is not the problem. Europa Universalis 3 taught me that morale restores itself at the start of each month! What do we do?[/joking]
I already did an extension and it ended up at a bad time now, so I am going to extend it for another 12 hours and hope we get some news from the Wild People 'till that. It would be kinda stupid if we moved on when Pangaea is standing mighty but then again it would be stupid too if we were sitting ducks for days when we commissioned a sub for Atlantis

I think some delays are ok, but they are not at war with a player and could likely eat a stale without much troubles.

October 14th, 2011, 06:16 PM
How bad is Pangaea's position, does anyone have a good feel for it? (e.g. should we bother with getting a sub, or just flick them to AI if they are not back before the turn is due to host).
I'm very happy with delays for people who let us know what is happening, but when they just disappear for a couple of turns in a row typically it means they have abandoned the game in my experience (like Sqeelch did with Marignon).
Anaconda
October 14th, 2011, 06:41 PM
Pangaea should have a solid stance, maybe a little bit delayed tho, because of the long strife with Marignon. He was pushed back to his capital and hes been build everything up from the scratch again.
