View Full Version : MP The Ascension Wars: MA,12 players, no mods, newb friendly. [Year 4, 8/12 remaining]
3V4JKZ2
February 5th, 2012, 06:18 PM
Edit: I forgot to mention; please give 2-3 days notice if you need to go absent/quit for attempts to find replacements.
What is meant by new player friendly: This game is not exclusively for new players (though I am one, and I expect there will be more). What is recommended is that new players take supposedly "stronger" nations and the most experienced players take supposedly "weaker" nations, or try something new.
Also, I think a fairness in this sort of game would be for new players, once defeated, to be able to request explanations of why people did things certain ways (IE, hold questions until you're out, then PM questions to your victor, to get some learnings). This game is all about having fun and improving, for newer players and vets alike. People should generally disclose their experience with their nation pick.
The specs:
Host:: PBEM Llamaserver.
Age: MA
Map: Primea [13 per playerish]
How Often on Turns: 24 hours quickhost to turn 20 (or requests), 48 hours from there, slow to 72 hours late game if necessary.
Number of Players: 12
Mods: Most new players struggle with the systems mastery required for dominions 3. Changing it up with any mod that does not have a completely accurate changelog amounts to adding a second level of systems mastery, making this harder for new players.
Non-Standard Settings: Special sites at 45%, Hall of Fame entries 15, Renaming is allowed.
Victory Conditions: Last one standing
Diplomacy Policy: None; do as you wish, keeping in mind consequences in future games, as well as later in that game (if you stab someone early, any alliance later in that game is likely to prove less trustworthy). Trades should be fulfilled
Cheesy Tricks: New players won't know them and won't be ready for them. This is things like sending 50 bad items to someone right as they put up forge of the ancients to make them waste gems, using scouts to constantly siege someone's fortress, and there are probably a few others I historically read about but have since forgotten.
My race: Ashdod. Note that this is my first MP game, so there may be things that I am just figuring out in terms of hosting. I have read this forum a fair bit.
Hope this sounds good and that I haven't forgotten anything.

I'd enjoy a game without CBM for once. It's been a long time since I played vanilla, if you'll have me that is.
As for the nation, not sure what you personally consider a weaker nation in MA, C'tis? Man? Arco?
I'll take anything really, no preferences.

Same here - I'd like to join, but I'm rather experienced (though not good at all;) ). Just assign me any nation of your choice.

Parone: Korwin is right that Ulm is quite weak. You might want to consider a "Giant" nation. I'm hoping this game will get going in 1-3 days; can you get on presently?
Ossa: I gave you man based on Executor's list, though if you'd like something else.

Ulm has trouble with magic + gems since they can only search 2 Earth- 1 Fire. Maybe taking a pretender mage with all paths would help?
But yeah, I call Arco. It might not be the best choice for a beginner but I have some ideas on what to do.

Greetings,
I am a veteran from the times of Dominions PPP, but have barely played Dom3, and in fact been away since roughly 2007, so what knowledge I had is mostly outdated or forgotten, tho I might still be able to pull a couple tricks.
Feeling the itch to get back into the game, and a vainilla one would great for this. I have trouble enough handling the new nations to add also mods on top.
Are sea nations ok? If yes, playing R'lyeh again after so long would be nice.
If otherwise, not sure. Maybe Vanheim?

I'm brand new multiplayer, and I've only really played CBM recently. I liked to try either the Agartha or Shinuyama, depending on which be easier to handle for a newb.
I think I have a slight preference for the Shinuyama though.

Battle for Wesnoth avatar! I'll think I'll have to get reacquainted with that game soon. Don't know why but that reminded me of plants vs zombies too...
I'm probably a bit more experienced than "experienced". Just though I'd get it out there before anyone implies I'm trying to mislead or join a newb game.

Lego, Wendigo, I got you guys.
I just remembered one of those things that I should have thought to mention:
Edit: I forgot to mention; please give 2-3 days notice if you need to go absent/quit for attempts to find replacements.
Also, Wendigo, I gave you R'lyeh; It looks like we'll be finishing with 10-12 players. Can I get map suggestions for my creation this evening?
Also, could I ask the vets (Wendigo, Korwin, Ossa, Executor) to comment on R'lyeh as the only sea nation? I think that might have implications, but I'm not sure what they are.
In timeline; it looks like game up tonight at 11:00 PM PST, pretender submission, with first turn on Thursday or Friday...unless I screw something up in game creation.
10-12 people means 100-120 territories small, 150-180 medium. I'm not really friendly to considering "large".
That means 100-180. I am going over Llama's list, and removing the ones with insufficient land starts or too many sea starts (I have figured that giving R'yleh 30 provinces of sea is iffy :p ) It's possible I removed something good from the list due to short-sightedness. Apologies if I did.
So, organized by size:
Section 1: 100-121
Three Lake: 92 land, 12 sea (104, small)
Aran: 96 land, 11 sea (107, small)
Random map: Dark Paradise: 104 land, 16 sea (120, small)
Ilzgot: 104 land, 16 sea (120, small)
Random Map: Hellscape: 105 land, 15 sea (120, small)
Mines and Farms: 105 land + 16 sea. (121, small)
Section 2: 121-150
The Desert Eye: 108 land, 17 sea (125, small-medium)
Random Wraparound: Tiny_000, the middle one (the other two would be hostile to a water nation); 110 land + 15 sea. (125, small-medium)
Shadowshore: 120 land + 13 sea (133, small-medium)
Parganos (or fixed?): 116 land + 19 sea. (135, small-medium)
Random Map: Hieronica: 131 land + 19 sea (150, medium)
Section 3: 150+
Map for Old Kings: 135 land + 18 sea (153, medium)
Primea: 147 land, 9 sea (156, medium)
The Land of Loemendor: 142 land, 15 sea (157, medium) (The unmodified version)
Random map: Etruscae: 158 land, 22 sea (180, medium)
Urraparrand: 145 land, 35 sea, broken up. (180, medium)
ShariversomfixLlama: 168 land, 12 sea (180, medium)
So, looking for strong opinions/preferences from people (including the newer people), though I'm generally against going really large (more than 15-16 provinces per person)

Also, could I ask the vets (Wendigo, Korwin, Ossa, Executor) to comment on R'lyeh as the only sea nation? I think that might have implications, but I'm not sure what they are.
I love R'ley (my only real win, was with R'ley, I sort of won another one with Vanheim (last man standing), but only because the strongest nations went AI).
It's a very strong nation (IMHO).
A second water nation would be really good to balance R'ley.
Maybe someone (not me) would be willing to play Oceania (It's a really weak nation, well its good at clamming, but thats all...) or Atlantis?
If we went with only one water nation, I would vote for very few water provinces, so R'ley would need to get and keep land...
3V4JKZ2
February 7th, 2012, 03:57 PM
Whatever, if Wendigo hasn't played in 5 years, giving him R`ley alone should be fine if we go for fewer water provinces.

Also, when it comes to maps, as the Agartha, I am aware that border mountains are awesome, but I would like a map with regular mountains, since Cave Cities can't be built on border mountains.
3V4JKZ2
February 7th, 2012, 04:35 PM
How can I tell the difference between border mountains/regular mountains on the map images?
legowarrior
February 7th, 2012, 04:43 PM
You can't with out clicking on the province. If the map has prominent mountains at the edge of the province, it is mostly like border mountains, but most map makers that use border mountains in random map making, go through, and change some of the provinces by hand to mountain provinces, or have both border and mountain provinces. It's not the end of the world either way. I'm here to have fun, I've never done multiplayer before, so, I'm not even sure to to turn in my pretender or my turns yet.

I'm here to have fun
Cool story. I'm here to dominate and MAKE GROWN MEN CRY! YEEEAAAAHHHHH!
*cough* um...
But seriously, as far as map suggestions, the only one I have echoes what somebody else already mentioned. Considering most of us are new to multiplayer/rusty, I'd be partial to a map on the smaller end of the scale. Most of my games, SP, have been maps with only a relative handful of provinces.
But I'm going to have to hop onto the IRC sometime tonight so I can have somebody walk me through how playing on the llamaserver works.
Wendigo_reloaded
February 7th, 2012, 05:02 PM
I am fine with less water provinces (say, a 70-80% of the land provinces/land nations?), or with a 2nd water nation, whatever you guys prefer.
Seas can also be split to make the early game more challenging (so long as I do not get a single sea start surrounded by land, I am fine with that too).
I would suggest 8-12 provinces/player, with more the game might die prematurely.
...
Wesnoth is one of those games you keep going back to, pretty much like Dominions, did not even remember the avatar I had.

Lego, that's 18 per player, which is huge. We're generally looking at 10-12ish I think, which is small-medium.

I'd like to suggest the short list of:
Hellscape: 105 land + 15 sea (120, small-medium) (10 per person), sea is broken up
Shadowshore: 120 land + 13 sea (133, small-medium) (~11 per person), sea is around edges.
This is based on the 10 provinces per player "small game", and things without strong sea advantages.

@3V4JKZ2:
Never been in a game that needed a rule to enforce agreements (speaking about Dom1 & 2 here): players are very unlikely to not honour them, because opponents backstabbed develop grudges, & a bad reputation can bite you in future games (or even in the same one).
Some gaming groups enjoy a well executed backstab, that did not seem to be the case in this community, at least in my experience.
It's basically a repeated prisoner's dilemma, which makes diplomacy the most powerful tool in the game:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repeated_game#Repeated_prisoner.27s_dilemma
However, different interpretations of what was agreed are common (be that the word, or the spirit of the agreement), so disputes arise anyway.

New players:
make sure you send the correct pretender, if you have created many different ones for a nation you will see something like this:
mid_vanheim_0.2h
mid_vanheim_1.2h
.....
If you are not sure which is the correct one, backup your newlords folder, delete the content and create the god again in the game. The single file showing now in the newlords folder will be your pretender. After sending it, you can restore your other builds.

Let's say 64/65 (hiding in 63) and 105 (since it's easily visible on the map) are teleport/etcetera into, and 150/151/153 (hiding in one province) are connected, so whoever starts near there can fight it out for those strangely connected provinces if they so desire.

The deep seas seem abuzz with rumors of a great army forming and the Pythiums seem to have gained a large lead in Gems.
Most MA nations start out with 5 gem income, but Pythium starts with 8. R'lyeh has cheap mindless cannonfodder troops available, so a sudden increase in army size isn't too surprising, though it could also be due to a random event; land nations can get a sudden pile of militia too. http://dom3.servegame.com/wiki/Main_Page is an excellent resource for beginners and veterans alike to check up on info like this, though it's temporarily down now. :(
Edit: Also, some info can be gleaned from the titles of a pretender god. I'll use my own, Zhuge Liang, as an example. "Minister of Mountains" because he has earth, "God of the Celestial Bodies" because he has astral, and "Symbol of Unchallenged Victory" because he'll be the eventual winner :D Not everything is described of course, so the titles only give you hints.

THE RUMORS CONTINUE: As the next week started, we find that everyone has conquered their first province, except the C'tis, who have 3 provinces to their name? Perhaps another sign of an awake Pretender, already ready to take up the mantle of one true god!
T'ien Ch'i seems to have gotten lucky in their conquest, since they seem to be gaining in Gem Income. What could they have found out there in the world? The rumor mongers don't have an answer to that... yet.
As to Dominion, it seems that the Abysia are in the lead, spreading knowledge of their God further than any other. What could the cause of this be?
Otherwise, R'lyeh stay in the lead in army size, although whether this is useless chaff or elite guards, that is not for the rumors mongers to spread, only ones who face them will be able to tell you.

Just a guess, but a high dominion score like Abysia's might be indicative either of an awake pretender, or a high initial dominion scales for a bless strategy.
Note all this is based on score charts and pretender titles, take it with a grain of salt.
I'm really surprised that there is only one awake pretender.
Based on what I've seen so far I put C'tis on an awake Prince of Death and Abysia on a E9 Cyclops, neither are likely to be good early neighbours.
Arco, Ermor, Man and Bandar Log all seem have an astral flavour about them. Just based on what is usually popular I'd guess Enchantresses for Arco and Man, Oracles for Ermor and Bandor Log.
Tien Chi with astral and earth magic usually means a Lord of Plenty; for good reason it's a great chassis.
Agartha has good dominion with nature and death magic, so my guess would be a Lord of Rebirth.
Ashdod has heavy nature magic, but there are several different chassis, with different strengths, that could bring that to the table. He may try to make an early run at Mother Oak / Gift of Health.
I don't have enough info yet to make a good guess about R'lyeh or Pythium other than to note that Pythium seems to be playing against it's strength.

Nightfal, I'm guessing as Mictlan (sp?) you took some sort of imprisoned pretender, probably with fairly weak scales, so you could afford to pay for a F9W9 bless strategy. Maybe something other than a F9W9, but something along those lines. Maybe F9W4S4. Blood and death don't make for great blesses for your sacreds, and they're not large enough to really benefit from the tandem E-N seen a lot. But those jaguar warriors with F9W9 are pretty sick.

RUMORS SPREAD like wide fire through out the land of a giant nation forged by the C'tis, one big enough to swallow many nations. Only the nation of the T'ien Chi'i seem to be able to keep pace with them. On the other, Man seems to be pursuing a policy of isolation.
Despite the awake God, the message of the C'tis doesn't as far as other, perhaps the godling isn't to that strong in its domain.
It is during these weeks that nations are starting to reach out, and borders are being established. No one nation wishes to strike the first blow it seems.
The people proclaim that the Abysia are the wisest nation, knowing more about magic than any others.

Sorry to ruin such a great pace but could I possibly get an extension on the next turn? This one's in but I won't be able to send a turn in until saturday evening llamatime.(48 hours from now)
I'd ask for a 36 hour extension just to be sure since turns are getting in rather fast.
EDIT: Scratch that, 24 hour is more than enough. :o

So if I count myself, we are 6 nations in this tiny corner of the map.
Where are the others?

The Kingdom of Ashdod can not confirm or deny that there are actually other nations on the map at this time.

Hmm, but Ashdod confirmed with above message it itself is on the map.
So Ashdod has the rest of the map for himself?

The Abysian empire can assure the little monkey people of Bandar Log that the missing nations are likely on the other side of the map. R'yleth should be somewhere wet.
We are willing to consider peaceful relations of course, but any violation of our sovereign borders will be frowned upon by the Great Bubbles.

Yes. That is correct. Feel free to leave those pesky knights alone and stay to the north. While elephant steaks sound rather tasty, we've heard they are expensive to replace.

Some heretic atlantian scum raised the flag of a false god. The leaders have already been lobotomized & will throw their lives for the Sleeping God in the first ranks of the lobo guards.
It was a random event.

There is this one awesome random event that I've only seen in SP maybe once or twice, and I think its only for LA Ermor, which is kind of a bummer for me now, but its when a handful of cultists with ghouls decide to take over a province and basically give it over to you if they're successful. I could go for some randomized love thrown my way this game.
3V4JKZ2

LA Ermor, plus I think unlike singleplayer, if a random event takes your province and someone else tries to move in, that's usually a declaration of war.

C`tis at one point in the last 2 threads asked me to make sure that he doesn't stale this turn, and he's the only one with orders left to submit.
I'm going to add 12 hours, then leave auto-hosting on, then re-evaluate in the morning. If you're someone not C`tis, please don't withdraw your orders. I'm not sure if he deleted the post because he said he thought he'd make it or not; but I'll leave auto-hosting on; if you're C`tis, please don't take this opportunity to arbitrarily slow things :p

Turn in! Thanks for the delay.
As for Man, the fine and loving lizards of C'tis were more than glad in overthrowing the evil dictator pretender who established rule there. The good people of Man are in the safe care of the C'tis lizards. The Dark Lord of C'tis has taken personal interest in looking after these poor folk.

Quite frankly, i really dislike how this turned out. Ctis is already "powerful" in stock by itself, but getting a free lab, fortress and home province income this early is pretty huge. Bad manner by whoever is playing Man.

In all fairness I think Man had a bit bad luck the first few turns. We were spaced 2 provinces apart too so I raided his capital soon as I could ( on turn 5 or 6 ) with my pretender. There wasn't much he could do.

As it will swiftly become apparent from the score graphs, I am being double teamed in a surprise attack from Ermor and Mictlan. I guess I should understand why Ermor was unwilling to agree to a NAP-3.
Any neighbour of Mictlan can likely take advantage of this, as my scouts show all their armies engaged in the northern of their territory. They've also wasted 55 gold on province defence in almost every province. I'll also agree to send a single useful but can't be created by your nation item later in the game, if I make it that far (Dwarven hammer; earth, death, astral or fire boosters, that sort of thing).
R`lyeh, if you're looking to make Landfall off the north of your territory, Mictlan and Ermor are distracted.

I understand that your a bit irritated, but that sometimes happens when you expand into multiple peoples face and are hyper aggressive in diplomacy; I did try to warn you.

The place for something like that is private messages with the people that you actually have contact with in game, a public message is considered bad form by most people; and probably less likely to get you help.
For what it's worth, good luck.

Your warning was a little too subtle for me, I guess. I'm not actually irritated, I understand that it seemed like a sound tactical move to interrupt border negotiations with a preemptive strike. I'm just here to make sure it doesn't pay off as best I can. :-)
I wasn't aware public information sharing was considered bad form. My apologies. That's a first game mistake, that I hope no other nation will hold against me.

Well, you are Ahdod. The more powerfull Nations often get ganged upon.
But I'm not shure that was the reason for Ermor and Mictlan.
Another reason might be, they think they have something useful against Giants.

Generally taking the strongest nation (Hinnom, Ashdod, LA Ermor, Jotunheim, etc.) is not a good idea since they usually get ganged. A newb can get away with such a nation but any experienced player should know the dangers of having a nation like that.
Personally, I would have attacked you instantly were you next to me on the map.

February 19th, 2012, 11:25 AM
Pretty much all the reasons stated are why I decided to attack you. I knew from reading different guides and opinions on the forum that Ashdod can snowball into something pretty powerful with all of its sacreds and natural thug/SC commanders.
And your diplomatic style came across as overly aggressive, which didn't seem like the type of nation I'd want to have on my border or have further treaties with.

haha guess not. This is my first multiplayer Dom3 game, but I've played a lot of turns based games before where diplomacy is heavily involved, so I'm not exactly new to THAT aspect of multiplayer Dom3. There are some different considerations to make in the diplomacy that are specific to Dom3, but for the most part you don't want to have to deal with somebody who is constantly trying to muscle you if you can avoid it.
And, well, n00b or not there are some nations that are dangerous to be around, and yours is one of them. Sorry! :o

The only thing I can think of that is similar to this that I've ever played is a single game of "Diplomacy" the board game ~4 years ago. Or D&D :p
