View Full Version : Weapon Targets

Does anyone know if there is a way to make a weapon able to target everything *except* planets?

I see : Ships, Planets, Ships\Planets, Ships\Planets\Ftr\Sat, Seekers, Ftr\Sat\Seekers.

But I don't see anyway to have a weapon able to target Ships\Ftr\Sat\Seekers.

I am also guessing that Sats includes Mines?

Anybody have any ideas?

The only thing I came up with is to add plan shield to all planets and make the value so high that normal weapons can't get through (unless a MASSIVE amount is used) and then increasing all planetary assault weapons by that shield value, but I'm not even sure that would do it.

Unfortunately, your planets would still have to worry about phased weapons & null-space.

As an alternative, try increasing the hitpoints of raw population by 50x.
Add a platform mount to increase their hitpoints by 50x as well.

Then, increase the damage from planetary weapons (or shrink them, allowing more on a ship)
Remember that SE4 will get an RCE if the damage (after adding mounts) exceeds 64K!

You can make planetary shield generators have phased shields.

How??

by using "phased shield generation" rather than "planet - shield generation"

You can't have a weapon that can shoot at anything including seekers making the user not need PDC.

Did you test if this is working?
The phased shield ability is a component ability and as you know abilities of components and facilities frequently do not function if you assign it to the other group.

Yeah, phased shield generation works for facilities. I've tested it before.

Thank you very much for this information. I will then modify the planetary shield facility to phased shields. Otherwise it is just too easy to bypass by phased polaron beams.

Make sure to change this in the AI files too, otherwise they won't be able to use it.

I made the first levels of planetary shield tech give normal shields (20K/5K, 50K/20K) and the top end phased shields (75K/50K). Tech=>(ruins/normal)
At the very least, the AI should build one of the normal generators through its build orders, and then upgrade it to phased as soon as it finishes...

I'm a little confused here, with all the talk of planetary shielding.

If you don't wish ships/fighters/etc, to target planets, then simply modify the strategy that the ship (or ships) uses. In the strategies there is a "Do Not Fire On" option, and one of those listed is planets.

I use that frequently.

Val wanted to make the weapon ineffective against planets. So you can't kill a planet with the weapon, even if you want to.

If the planet has huge phased shields, then you need to use a planetary weapon (with huge damage) to punch through, or null space.

Thanks for all the input, looks like a toss up between using phased shielding or increasing the pop damage ratio.

I think I'm leaning more towards the later as it won't require the AI to do anything new http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

You will probably want to add platform mounts for heavier armor, too.

Ellaborate a little more, please http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
