I am enjoying the demo a great deal but I cannot figure something out.

When I colonize some planets, I cannot construct anything on them. The time to complete in the construction queue says "Never". These are planets that have a green star beside them so they are optimal for colonization.

Why am I not allowed to build anything? Thanks.

no population. Make sure you load population on your colony ships.

If you give the colonize order, and the ship is currently above a planet, it will automatically pick up colonists if it is empty.

If the "move and colonize" order is given while the ship is not over a planet, it cannot pick up any colonists, and so the ship lands to create a ghost town http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif .

OK... I understand now. The tutorial wasn't clear about the two colonize scenarios you outlined.

Thanks for the responses.

Isn't this the 1000th time we have to answer this question.
I agree that the game it isn't clear here, and I remember having this problem the first times I played SE4.
Hmmm... addind the explanation below to the comp descriptions may help.
I hope that the new manual that will come with Gold solves this and similar newbie questions.

As long as he isn't asking it for the 1000th time everything is fine. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

It occurs to me that this problem could be solved once and for all by changing the TimeToComplete text from "Never" to "Never: No Population." Or, even better, by giving a warning message when you put something in the queue for a zero-pop planet. Or, best of all, by giving a warning and asking for confirmation when a "MoveTo" order is given to an empty colonizer. (And ideally there would also be a check box for "Don't give this warning again" for experienced players.) Newbies often do not read the manual, no matter how good it is, and even old pros mess up now and then.

Could also be "fixed" by changing this line in settings.txt

Automatic Colonization Population := 0

to some other number
