I'm tooting my own horn a bit, but I thought people here might be interested in reading the Roguelike Highlight I wrote about Approaching Infinity on my blog:

Please let me know if I made any mistakes in there somewhere!

wow, what a great article! (if I do say so myself...)
I think you really summed up the game. I'm also really pleased with the impressions it made on you: the different challenges you faced in different parts of the game... It's great to read about you discovering the layers of depth. Very exciting to me.
[edit]
it also challenges me to add even more new things to the game, so that there will always be something *new* for you to find... Have you met the Narcratu? Found alien pylons? Seen a Sargasso sector, or a planet farm, or Been down a black hole?

I think I met some Narcratu deep in some caves, but I never met their ships. And I did go down a black hole. Actually I found a planet in the black hole, with caves that were completely devoid of life. When I surfaced from the cave I was on a different planet, but still in the black hole. It was kind of weird, but also kind of cool. The planet was the site of a Gruff quest, so I don't know if that had something to do with why it spawned.
The other stuff you mention I haven't seen yet, I don't think, so I'm glad to here there will be even more cool stuff for my next journey!
I do think my inclination to fully explore planets and caves dulled somewhat when I started finding lots of really deep (infinite?) caves that weren't very different from one another. So I eventually stopped exploring caves. I'm not sure if that's actually a problem, though!
