Art and History - what do they do

You run into various forms of "Alien Art" and also Historical Artifacts (that look like little pitchers). They don't seem to increase data or experience, and you can't sell them. Does anyone know what they do?

They give data rather than credits. In my current game they are currently giving c.100k of data.

Pylons are also lined up for a future feature... :)

The language on them (it's really just another alphabet) was designed by kickstarter backers, one letter at a time, and uses quotes similar to those found on "engraver" planets, though they are different.
