It would help if I could ask my ship to keep laying mines at a spot up to a certain number instead of having to return to it each turn and ask it to lay more mines. Is there a feature I missed that would let me do this?

I havn't got SEIV to hand but is there a 'repeat orders' icon on the order taskbar. If there is, I would have thought you could give your minelayer orders to lay a field at the required spot and then click on the 'repeat orders' icon on the tool bar to get it to do this until it runs out of mines.
Let me know if it works

I just took a look and I don't see a "repeat orders" option alas. Perhaps I missed it? Anyone else know where I might find one?

Derb, it may well be that there isnt such a button and that I am suffering from hallucinations after not playing SEIV for over 2 weeks - if this is the case, I apologise profusely

Yes there is a "Repete Orders" in the tool bar it should work I use it to load troops, however there is a total # of units per sector of 100 (can get around it though) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

The "Repeat Orders" button is a red arrow that curves around to itself. It's hotkey is 'K', and it is the tenth button on the bottom of the orders toolbar (or the button on the bottom right of the second orders subsection, if your resolution is only 800X600 pixels).
You could use this to keep laying mines in a sector until there are 100 or more in the sector, but not to some set number, such as 25. Either keep some notes saying when to cancel repeat orders, or when the orders queue will be empty.
--edit: forgot to turn off sig.

If you want to lay x numebr of mines, but not the limit of 100, you could give it consecutive load and lay mines orders. if your mine layer can lay 15 mines per turn, and you want to lay 60, give it four such combinations of orders.

Another way to lay all the mines that the ship is carrying is Launch Units Remotely, Move to a different sector about half the ship's movement away, Repeat Orders. (This is assuming that the ship can carry more mines than it can launch in one turn.)
