I have just conquered the planet of a neighbour, destroyed several ships and captured others yet he still keeps trading with me and his ships are not attacked by my minefields. This turn I have declared war on him so hopefully he will get the message...

You can still perform intelligence operations on allies, it's a "feature", and an intended one (at least I'm pretty sure it's intended... countries in that place called "the Offline World" spy on their allies all the time).
The AIs that are mostly peaceful (read: the ones who don't declare war because you exist) don't seem to get pissed much at intel ops.
--edit: Sig. Again.

How did you capture a planet from him? Intel? If so, the AI will get upset very fast but then again he might be in too many wars already so it doesn't declare you war.

I captured the planets and ships the "old fashioned way" - conquest. The demo doesn't give you enough tech levels to "build" serious intelligence ops.

So what is the treaty between you and him?

We had a trade alliance and our relations were warm. He seemed quite willing to keep it even when I had invaded his planets and killed several ships.

Call my stupid but I don't get it. How do you invade a planet when you have a trade alliance? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif

Is this a simultaneous game, and by any chance did you get a treaty offer on the very next turn after you offered a treaty?

Doesn't sound right, you shouldn't be able to invade if you have a treaty http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif somethings missing here

You can give a ship of yours the attack order in a simultaneous game. They will follow the allies ship around, but they will not actually attack them. If they have enough speed to keep up they will just end every turn in the same sector as them.

It is happening again... I have a non-intercourse treaty with the Cluck Ruk. They remain "warm" towards me and have kept the treaty even though I have troop captured two planets, destroyed a bunch of his ships and used intelligence against him (over a period of several turns). This must be a bug!

Non-interference would allow you to fight, though the other race should be getting upset.
Try changing them to human control for a turn, and see what their treaty status with you is.

Correction - they are angry now but still sticking to the treaty.
