It would be great if the 'cart' icon representing remote mining was color coded for each extractor type at work: Blue for minerals, Green for Nutrients, Red for Rads.
It would be nice to just glance at a color coded icon instead of having to search to see exactly what is being mined, especially when sattelites are concerned! Ughh!!
[BTW- am I correct in saying: remote mining equipment just isn't cost effective except on large sattelites?]

In most cases, yes.
If you plan to colonize or SM the object into a colonizable world in the future, I believe it is never worth remot mining.

Unless you're planning to make it a research or intel or military colony.
Or, if you're in a game that doesn't allow colonizing certain planet types.
Or, if you WANT to decrease the resource value, because it's essentially in foreign territory.

It can also be cost effective if you are remote mining for Organics or Rads. A frigate with two miners, or even an escort with only one miner component, can remote mine enough of that type of resource to allow you to replace the rad or org facility on your home planet with a mineral miner, or a research fac. This is especially useful if, as Pvk said you are in a colonize own type/own aptmosphere game where colonizable planets are very scarce.
