if I read correctly. If I want a race to build ships with a specific weapon, I just put that weapin family number in "slot" one in designcration.txt? same with secondary weapons? can I fill all the options up with the hopes that maybe one will actually be built?

Yes, the slots are in priority order, so if it has the technology for slot #2's type, it'll use that instead of slot #3's type, unless it has slot #1's type.

If you need more slots, you can copy the whole ship type entry and then change to other weapon types (or whatever) on that one.
