I have a Gold Demo game running and after two successful ruin explorations I recently explored ruins, got the "new technology found in ruins" message but received no new tech at all! Has this happened to anyone else?

More than likely the ruins had a tech you already had.

Ruins are seeded with specific technologies at the beginning of the game. So, as pathfinder said, you probably colonized a ruins planet that had a technology that you already researched. It might have had Ship Construction 3. If you have already researched that tech, then the ruin is wasted.

possible but if so very unlucky as I was only perhaps 30 turns in and didn't know much yet!

Well, the tech levels given by ruins are rather low (usually 3 or lower), and so it is possible.

Actually, the ruins that don't have unique techs are not seeded with specific technologies. If you save the game and reload and then wait one turn before trying again the techs you gain change.

What tends to happen to me is that I get a unique tech, then any other ruins that have that unique tech all turn up blank.

Really? I never knew that they changed. But reloading the game to get a different tech is cheating.

Well, yes. (Actually, I've tended to reload to avoid getting some techs. Getting Gas *and* Ice Colony techs early in the game is just too much of an advantage sometimes.)
