When I try to start SE4 Gold, I keep getting an error like "Exception ESockError. Initialization of windows sockets failed"

I suspect this is because I used 98lite to install Win98 and therefore don't have all the Internet components that I should. Does this mean I need to reinstall Windows normally just to get SE4 Gold to work?

Sockets are the windows module that a program uses to communicate over TCI/IP style connections, or other similar things. You'll have to install sockets (included in the internet files install, to be sure), so you'll have to reinstall.

I think the dll is winsock.dll, but I forget.

No, you don't need to re-install WIn98. Just dial-up networking (even if you don't use it). Control Panel-Network-Add-Adapter-Microsoft-Dial up Adapter. You'll probably need your Win98 CD.
