View Full Version : How Dumb Is Your Game AI?

My game AI is so dumb it tries to colonize planets with cloaked colony ships.
My game AI is so dumb that it repeatedly tries to upgrade a vessel that has more than 50% differance.
My game AI is so dumb that it will send a ship out to the middle of nowhere with no supplies.

Sure the AI is dumb, but I must admit to doing some pretty stupid things in my few PBW games! The first would have to be counting on not building up defences, the second having trust in another player without being earned. In certain ways the AI can be be an inspiration. It is easy to bash a program, but how would you rate yourselfs?? I must admit to having my empires crumble when faced with another "human player"

Oh I am not bashing the program, just some of the really dumb things the AI does. If I were to bash a program, you would know it. (See "Don't Buy Civ III" Thread.)
I just wanted to post about the things I have seen the AI do that I thought were dumb.
I could start another thread for "Dumb things you have done while playing SEIV" but who would admit to doing dumb things when you can blame it on the AI?
Relax, I love this game, and I in no way mean any disrespect to Aaron or his work. I love SEIV.

Think the AI does it ok in turn based games.
I saw the error message (trying to colonize while is cloaked), when I change an AI player to human control, to see what is doing... but is not a problem when the AI have the control.
In simultaneous games, you never will see this problem... because the AI NEVER cloak their ships! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

I would wonder what a program like big Blue (smashing the best "Human"Chess player) would do to SEIV. Bringing me to another subject. How many of you do play Chess?

As do I, If I play a game just roleplaying, great game. In fact my son hated SEIV Gold until you updated the Star trek races to gold

Well, does it count if I pretend to play chess? I can move the pieces without breaking the rules, but other than that.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/blush.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/blush.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/blush.gif

The AI do dumb things because the TEXT files need fixing. I recently finished a game in which I placed a neutral on a sphere world. IT started the game with 100,000 research points no one got to it until turn 90 or so. The neutral was still using level one missles and level one Projectile weapons. We later found that the research files for all the AI's and neutrals had errors in them that prevented them from researching correctly.

My game AI minister is so dumb:it tries to load pop from my low pop planets to another low planet.
My game AI oppenet is so dumb: it ask for a treaty with me and when i accept it,AI refuses the treaty?.
My game AI oppenet is so dumb: it ask for the same treaty, which i say no, It sends the same one 2 turns later. NOTE; It just wont take no for an answer?.
My game AI oppenet is so dumb: it ask for the same trade exchange that i just sent him?.

I will admit to an extreme folly. I once spent four days, or 32 hours designing my own map; had it ready to go after many tests; was going to do one Last adjustment (add an extra planet); and then went to test it; liked what i had, except for one tiny little adjustment; went to load the map in the editor, but accidently hit the save button; lost everything.
So here I am, four days later, 38 hours into my next project; then I discover that the AI is really retarded and has a mind of its own. Ahh, what do you do. Life goes on and I am 70 hours of experienced map editor guru. Right. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

THe AI is actually rather good at the right bonus and and such. The object of this thread is really to have fun. We all know the AI does dumb things, but we seldom post about it.
My game AI is so dumb it offers a Partnership Treaty and then declares war on me within 5 turns.
Get it?? Just have fun.

Oh, you mean the times the AI:
Repeatedly sent ships through Unstable Warp Points into sectors with Black Holes.
Had no treaties with me but agreed to swap large amounts of tech I desperately needed for an empty out of supply Colony ship, (of the same type as its home world). All warp points between the traded ship and the Ais space were blocked by satellites. It never made a treaty with me and never got the ship back. Eventually it moved into the path of a ship with a “Move To” command and was destroyed. “Mea Culpa”.

My game AI is so dumb , it repeatedly tries to colonize a planet that's already colonized by another race.
My game AI is so dumb, it repeatedly tries to colonize a planet that's not there.
My game AI is so dumb, in one turn it uses 6 transports to replete a planet of pop, the next turn it sends all 6 transports back, the next turn it repletes..........
My game AI is so dumb, it attacks a fleet of 15 dreads with a single LC.
My game AI is so dumb, it creates attack fleets using all supply ships.

Some races just won't accept gifts that will hurt my empire (like giving them the colonization techs they don't have) because they feel murderous towards me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
(Neutral races don't seem to realize the only reason why I keep them alive is to act as a buffer against this or that alien race. Let their system be the battlefield.)

I've seen the AI do some stupid stuff. Like send and entire fleet into mothball and attack with me obsolete ships. But still, it's better than no AI.
In some games, the AI has given me a run for my money, others it hasn't.

My game AI is so dumb it likes to start building units on the smallest planet with the least amount of available cargo space.
My game AI is so dumb it moves an invasion fleet with landing craft full of troops next to a target planet -and then the second fleet moves in on the same turn and glasses the precious piece of property so that the fleet with the landing troops never gets to attempt to capture the planet.
My game AI is so dumb that fleets run back and forth between warp points - never choosing and following through with attacking a target.

There is a proverb among Civ players ... " to the novice the AI is a threat, to the experienced player.. an obstacle, to the veteran ..a nuiscence & to the expert a bag of money & advances just sitting there waiting to be taken".
The best opponents are always humans.

My AI is so dumb that I can steal a bunch of ships with Intel, and it doesn't stay mad if I gift some of them back. Steal 5, gift 2, steal 5, gift 2, steal 5, gift 2, ... and we're still best buddies. Most humans wouldn't put up with that!

Having just played a small tactical battle against the Jaenar, the AI handled the single enemy destroyer quite well. Too well in fact, gave me a real shock & I had to "get out of Dodge".

I finished (declared myself the winner in) a game Last night (1.67 with TDM) and checked to see how the AI's were doing. They provided some data for this thread.
The Sergetti were attacking me relentlessly early, so I finally sent in a fleet and glassed their homeworld. It was defended by one cruiser and one weapons space station - no WP'S or sats or mines or fighters. It also contained the Sergetti's only ship yards - one on the planet and 3 in orbit. For the rest of the game, the Sergetti just sat around on their thumbs building units on their 19 other planets and getting "No Storage Available" 19 times in its log each turn.
The EEE had colonized all the gas giants in their area and had researched rock colonization, but they had not built any rock colony ships or colonized any of the excellent rock worlds. In fact, their 2 space yards and all their planets were idle. They were building nothing. They were, however, researching ice colonization so that they could also forget to colonize ice planets.
The Cue Cappa had a dozen or more space yards, but they were also idle.
The Colonials were "Warm" and "Receptive" with me the entire game but refused all treaties. They preferred to send cloaked light cruisers, one at a time, to attack my colonies. They died with up to 40 mines per planet in storage when I had no sweepers.
The Fezzran also had many mines, satellites and troops in storage and were building more. Their log was also mostly "No Storage Available."
The other AI's had similar problems. They all had maxed out their resource storage - usually 70K/90K/70K. They were all generating way more organics and radioactives than they need, and nobody seems to be able to launch a mine to actually protect a planet.

IMHO the two biggest weaknesses in the AI are demonstrated by your experience with the thumb-sitting Sergetti.
1. They can't seem to clear the construction queue when they hit a "storage full" message.
2. They can't scrap facilities to build a space yard.
These two issues prevent them from having a chance at rebuilding there empire after losing a couple of strategic planets, no matter how long they are ignored by the other players.

I like trading with the AI http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif : in my current game I play Drushoka, have a no-event war (no contact) with the Fazrah and a Trade Agr. with Amonkrie.
So I deal with them :
1st deal : give'em a non critical civilian tech lvl 1, some rads (4000) and ask for a ship, the biggest I see is a CL, I not even can build CL yet ... Agreed, they give me the ship, along with CL tech, APB lvl 1 and another tech I've forgotten. But yes, their engines 1 suck, I have CM drive ... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
2nd deal : this time I give'em more rads and a comm link to the infamous Fazrah, ask for another CL... they refuse, but offer an "unknown ship" instead ... I agree http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif , what do I got ? AN ICE COLONY SHIP (I was Rock ...) LOADED WITH POP !! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
I love dealing with the Amonkrie ... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Situation:
Cluster Map
Bad News, I discover the Vendron (sp) on my southern flank.
(I have found this AI to be the toughest I have played against.)
Good news: We are separated by a black hole with a Damaging Warp Point leading to their space
I have an escort on a patrol that includes popping in and out of the black hole system.
What are the Vendron doing?
They have repeatedly sent fleets into the black hole system. In 30 turns, none have made it across to my space.
Lesson?
Vendron make bad Neighbors
Black Holes Make Good Neighbors of Vendron
Black Holes make wonderful Fences.

Just started playing a Devnull game, in a cluster sector. The Canadian's keep sending a colony ship per turn into my home sector, and I keep blowing them up. Starting next turn I begin my conquest of their silly empire.

My game AI is so dumb, it sent 6+ colony ships through a defended warp point over multiple turns.
My game AI is so dumb, it maintains a war with me(started by another AI's intel) despite having never encountered me and having a brotherly disposition towards me.

My game AI is so dumb, it keeps sending Drones equipped with Anti-Planet Warheads against my StarBASE defended warp point and rams into my base and causes NO damage what-so-ever.
It keeps doing this turn after turn... Usually they lose about 10 drones per turn thanks to their stupidness. Makes me think I'm playing against a 2 year old. But I think the 2 year old would be more of a challange. LMAO!

I built a ringworld, and then left the shipyard bases in place to build weapon platforms and fighters while the ringworld yard built facilities. Well, one turn I had a population transport end it's movement over the ringworld, so I offloaded the population & gave it orders to move on the next turn. Well, the next turn it moved away WITH A FULL LOAD OF WEAPON PLATFORMS!!!
Apparently, the default cargo transfer (at least for base space yards) is to load units onto ship-based cargo rather than planet-based cargo. So I had to send my population transport back to the ringworld to put the weapon platforms where they belonged.
