I read your other thread and noticed you're still with standard SEIV. Unfortunately for you, Drones are only availible in SEIV Gold...where they are researched under Drones.

I have played with drones a bit / byte? I can't see any real big use for them. Unless you can build a huge amounts of them fast. I can see them early in a game but who has an extra 100000 research points early in the game. They may make a good warp point defense group but I have yet to test this. the only advantage they have so far is they don't cost maint.

Actually, I've found drones fairly useful so far; launching just a couple drones against small colonies will wipe out the colony. Large colonies still need a fleet action, but against races that rely heavily on seekers for their weapon platforms, drones could be used to soften up the planet before the fleet moves in. Of course, fighters would probably be just as effective for this, as seekers can't target either drones or fighters...

I've also successfully used drones against single ships; I have a number of drone-launching bases (paired with space yard bases, of course) scattered around my territory & my neighbor's territory, so it provides a low-maintenance (and low-profile) attack platform. I say low-profile because the AI concentrates on following my big fleets, and ignores the bases. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I have also used drones as system defense. You can keep them as plantary cargo and, when an enemy fleet enters the system, launch the drones.

Try drones with allegiance subverters and shields on them and tell me drones are ineffective.
