Hi everyone!
I'm really impressed with all the mods and community devoted to SE4 (got the gold recently, played the demo before that), and all the useful information in this forum.
There is one thing that has really been nagging me about this forum though. Could anyone please explain how the Posts are sorted inside threads??? at first I thought they were oldest at bottom and newer on top (opposite to every other forum I frequent), then I find Posts where the first post is right smack in the middle of the page http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif
Is it quirky, or a feature which I haven't realized the benefits of yet? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Hi, welcome to the game.
First post is at the bottom, always. The threads you found which appear to be out of order must just be threads where we are talking crap. We do that a lot=-)
Also , we often use the quote command to quote previous Posts, like this:

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That might look a bit like a beginning in the middle, I suppose.

First post on top makes sense, in a totally backwards kind of way. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
FPOT only seems right because that is the way it has been done for years.
Probably easier to code an "append", rather than flipping and shifting & renumbering pages.
However, the traditional way is not always the best way.
Just look at the YOGB&G&PHC thread, or the B5 Mod thread, or even the P&N thread, back when it was popular.
To a lesser extent, the other 100-post threads have the same problem.
With the LPOT system, you get the recent news with no hassle. For occasional visitors, the first page is good, and for the regulars, the first post or two are the only ones they haven't read.
If you want to go diving into the history of a thread, you'd be clicking a lot, but that kind of activity is pretty rare. (Who is going to read all 39 pages to get the details of how Pirates & Nomads came about?)

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I did. Mind you, it was only 20-odd pages back in those days...

Thanks
Like you said I probably just found threads where you're talking crap http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
Because some had both the top and the bottom post that didn't seem to be the first post... is the page thing backward too, so if there are 3 pages, page 3 then has the first post? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif
(doesn't anyone else think having the first post on top makes the most sense?)

Yes, the pages are backwards as well, so if a thread has 2 pages, the Last post on page 2 is really the first post. So you have to start at the bottom of the Last page to read a thread from the beginning.
It gets easier after you've been reading a while, and, like suicide junkie mentioned, it's really nice for regular readers, 'cause you can quickly see the most recent activity on a thread.

If you do want to read a thread cronolocaly you can click on the "Printer-friendly view of this topic "
http://www.shrapnelgames.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=print_topic;f=23;t=005717
It will put it in the posting order with blank text on a white background. That is a lot easier for some of us to read.
Enjoy
